  • Dxpedition Report from Rose Spit, Haida Gwaii
Rose Spit mini-DXpedition 11 July, 2011. Rose Spit loggings for 11 July, 2011: Medium Wave and Long Wave Here is a compilation of what I heard on an overnight DC only DXpedition to Rose Spit, about 25 km from the closest power lines, on the north east corner of Haida Gwaii. This spit is sandy, and covered in short grasses and strawberry plants, so ideal for remote DXpeditions, as it is accessible by 4x4 wheel drive vehicles. Conditions were not very good with the A index around 13, and K indices between 2 and 4, and solar flux at 90.6. The loggings below on MW are almost all from using a 750’ BOG aimed at New Zealand, unterminated. Here’s an aerial photo of the Spit. I was located just a few hundred meters past the tree line, in about the center of the spit, which faces N/NE. The larger photo below shows Rose Spit looking back to the West/South West to the treeline. Lot’s of room for BOGs! The figure below shows a view in the opposite direction down the spit to the N/NW where the 750’ BOGs were located. The NZ wire could have easily been double the distance. A more likely scenario for next time might be a phased BOG array towards NZ or dual Wellbrook delta loops. My wonderful DXpedition vehicle: A Nissan Frontier, 4 door, 4x4. Very comfortable, with a folding down front passenger seat, making a perfect platform for the radios and computer. Also a comfortable rear seat to sleep.

  • Smb Fee Increase Proposal
SMB FEE INCREASE PROPOSAL FEBRUARY 27, 2019 (RES UBMITTED JANUARY 31, 2020) that there will be a single fee known as the Student Media Fee for the UHM campus. This will reflect the current state of student media whereby all student media programs are governed by the Student Media Board. 2. Approve the proposed fee increase for all fee-paying students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, regardless of credit load, according to the proposed fee schedule in Appendix A. The combined fee for students will be $38 per student per semester (Fall and Spring semesters). RECOMMENDED EFFECTIVE DATE: Effective date of implementation will be Fall 2020. ADDITIONAL COST: The fee will increase AY2020 by $17 and AY2021 by $5. PURPOSE The purpose of this request is two fold: 1. Provide the Student Media Board with the necessary funding to sustain the University’s 98 year commitment to the student voice at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Student media programs rely on mandatory student fees in order to deliver effective programs to students and the community. The fee funds five student media programs of which 140 students directly engage and benefit from them. 2. Streamline existing fee structure from two separate fees (BOP Fee and the BCA Fee) to a single fee that funds all student media programs that are under the purview of the Student Media Board. This will allow the Board increasing flexibility yet accountability over all of their programs. BACKGROUND In 1967, the University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents (BOR) approved the charter for the Board of Publications (BOP) to be the governing authority of Ka Leo, the student-run newspaper since 1922; Hawaiʻi Review, the literary magazine which started in 1973; and Mānoa Now, the student media marketing and public relations unit that uses multiple digital and event platforms.

  • Special Report: Dxing in Oahu After the Quake
7 Special Report: DXing in Oahu After The Quake By Dale Park Following are loggings made in the aftermath of the 6.7-Richter scale earthquake that struck Ha- waii October 15 at 7:08 am (1308 ELT), followed a few minutes later by a 5.8 aftershock. Fortunately, the quakes only caused isolated damage to Oahu, but it was the island-wide blackout that occurred about 7:11 that riled everybody. The failure that occurred when the earthquake hit triggered a shutdown of Hawaiian Electric’s three power plants a few minutes later (and three minutes before the aftershock). The power failure at my home lasted until 11:20 PM (10/16 0520 ELT), 16 hours later. Blackouts also occurred on the Big Island and Maui, but most of those islands’ power was restored within a few hours. Initially the stations in Honolulu that stayed on were KSSK AM 590 and FM 92.3 and KUCD-FM 101.9, followed later by KRTR 650 and KKNE 940. KHNR 870 came on later only to go off again, but sister station KHUI-FM 99.5 remained on in the afternoon. Listening equipment: Sangean ATS-818CS, Terk AM1000 loop, lots of candles. Station News During/After the Quake (Times in ELT): 590 KSSK HI Honolulu. 10/15 1341. Station finally broke into a pre-taped interview to be- gin live coverage of the island-wide power failure. Station is designated as the main information station for state Civil Defense and has its own emer- gency generator. Programming was relayed on sister stations KSSK-FM 92.3 and KUCD-FM 101.9.
