SPEAKERS Cheryl Thompson-Morton, Lenfest Institute for Journalism Cheryl Thompson-Morton is a program manager at the Lenfest Institute for Journalism, where she supports the Institute’s mission to invest in and develop programming for individuals and institutions that create a more equitable news ecosystem in Philadelphia . Cheryl leads Lenfest’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy, which centers on four areas of focus: support for individual journalists of color; investment in media enterprises founded by people of color; diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in mainstream outlets; and collaboration between players in the Philadelphia news ecosystem .

Lisa Gibbs, Associated Press Lisa Gibbs is the director of news partnerships at The Associated Press, managing editorial collaborations with other news organizations and developing grant-funded coverage initiatives . She is also the newsroom’s point person on AP’s automation and artificial intelligence strategy group, which includes working with industry leaders and emerging startups to identify smart applications of automation/AI in media, project development, workflow integration and training . She joined AP in 2014 as global business editor from Money (Time Inc ). and is a previous executive business editor of the Miami Herald .

Joanna Zuckerman Bernstein, Spotlight PA Joanna Zuckerman Bernstein is the development director for Spotlight PA, where she oversees fundraising and helps manage partnerships, among many other tasks . She has a wealth of experience producing investigative journalism and supporting mission-driven nonprofits . Most recently, she was in charge of grants and partnerships for HolaCode, a coding bootcamp for returnees and deportees in Mexico City . As an investigative reporter, she was part of a team at the Miami Herald chosen as a finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in Local Reporting . She has also worked as a reporter for , where she broke a number of stories about the Takata airbag defects . Joanna received a master’s degree from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, where she was a Stabile Investigative Fellow . She also attended Columbia for undergraduate, with a major in English and minor in Hispanic Studies .

Now more than ever, as Pennsylvania plays an important role in the upcoming elections, we can expect more attacks on the media . What can you do to protect your staff? We’ll discuss how to assess threats, when to take action and what to do to feel secure when working from the office or out in the public . SPEAKER Tim Hinton, Haggerty Hinton & Cosgrove LLP Tim Hinton is a partner in the law firm of Haggerty Hinton & Cosgrove LLP located in Scranton . He is a 1987 graduate of the University of Scranton where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics, before spending one year working as a contract negotiator for the Navy Department in Washington, D .C ., where he received an Outstanding Achievement Award . Hinton attended the Duquesne University School of Law from 1988 to 1991 where he was a member of the Law Review and participated in numerous extracurricular activities . Mr . Hinton entered private practice in 1991 and has focused on civil litigation for the past 21 years . He is board certified as a civil trial attorney by the National Board of Trial Advocacy . Attorney Hinton spends a considerable amount of time representing newspapers, radio stations and electronic media concerning various legal issues including defamation, First Amendment Law and access to information .

Sean Stajkowski, Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center Sean Stajkowski is an intelligence analyst with the Pennsylvania State Police, Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center (PaCIC) and a member of the Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources Unit . His sector concentrations include emergency response planning and monitoring in the areas of transportation and energy across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania . Stajkowski has participated in emergency preparedness meetings with PEMA, various cyber threat trainings and safety presentations by energy and transportation companies . He has also provided presentations on insider threats, current cyber threat trends and suspicious activity reporting . He has researched the effectiveness of communication in remedial education to assist state-level inmates who have been paroled into the community, and has authored various papers based on his results . Mr . Stajkowski holds a Bachelor of Arts degree as well as Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Marywood University .

SPEAKERS Kevin Harley, Quantum Communication Kevin Harley is the managing director of Quantum Communication in Harrisburg, a strategic communications and media firm . Prior to joining Quantum Communications, Kevin was director of communications and press secretary for Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett . In that role, he planned and managed the governor’s public appearances, and directed and supervised the communications offices in each of the executive branch agencies . He was chief spokesman for the governor, the administration, and was the governor’s primary advisor on communications strategy . Kevin has led the communication teams on five statewide political campaigns; including Governor Corbett’s successful 2010 gubernatorial race and his 2004 attorney general election . At Quantum, Kevin directs the political media team for clients and most recently he developed and oversaw the media plan for the successful special election in the 12th congressional district with the election of Congressman Fred Keller .

Pete Leffler, The Morning Call, Allentown Pete Leffler, has worked for southeastern Pennsylvania-based newspapers since 1982, after graduating from Moravian College . He’s one of several senior content managers at The Morning Call in Allentown, and works with reporters who cover the federal and state governments, the City of Allentown and the Allentown and Bethlehem school districts . He oversees the newspaper’s political coverage, including its debates and polling . Previously he worked at the Pottsville Republican and then for the Calkins chain in Doylestown and Norristown, handling municipalities in Bucks and then Montgomery County . Pete covered Washington for The Morning Call from 1989-99, then moved to the dark side and became an editor once back in Pennsylvania . SPEAKERS Holly Lubart, Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Holly Lubart is the director of government affairs for the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association . In this role, she is responsible for planning and executing the legislative agenda for PNA . Most recently, Lubart served as the director of public affairs for AIA Pennsylvania, the American Institute of Architects . She has extensive experience in legislative advocacy, public policy and communications, including serving as legislative director at teh Pennsylvania Department of General Services and legislative communications supervisor at the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . Lubart is a member of the Pennsylvania Association for Government Relations and Pennsylvania Public Relations Society, serving as President in 2008 . She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication/Journalism from Shippensburg University .

Senator John P. Blake State Senator John Blake has served the 255,000 residents of the 22nd Senatorial District in Lackawanna, Luzerne and Monroe Counties since 2011 . He currently serves as a member of the Senate Democratic leadership team in the role of caucus administrator . He is also the Democratic Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee . Prior to serving as a Pennsylvania State Senator, Senator Blake served in numerous community and economic development roles at the local, state and federal level including acting secretary of the PA Department of Community and Economic Development; vice president and senior development advisor for PNC Bank; and executive director of the Lackawanna County Redevelopment Authority . Senator Blake is a graduate of Valley View High School . He also has an undergraduate degree from Villanova University; a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Marywood University; and an MBA in Finance from the University of Scranton’s Kania School of Management . He also received executive education in public management at Harvard University’s John F . Kennedy School of Government . Senator Blake has spent his entire life as a resident of Archbald Borough, where he still resides today with his wife of more than 30 years, Louise . Senator Blake and Louise have two children, Vince and Katie .
