Kirkuk Emergency Livelihoods Sub-cluster meeting #1 20.01.21

As of October 2020, over 163,000 IDPs had returned to their areas of origin in , according to IOM’s Return Index. Absence of basic services and insecurity continues, however, with over 64,000 returnees living in poor conditions, highlighted by a lack of livelihood opportunities, services, social cohesion and security. Many formerly displaced persons could not return to their homes due to extensive damage or destruction, and ended up renting accommodation, staying in crowded accommodation with relatives or living in unfinished houses. Hawija has also recently received approximately 2,000 IDPs after the latest round of camp closures. Both returnees and IDPs in the district are in urgent need of shelter, cash assistance, and sources of income, civil documentation and social cohesion.

After the closer of camps the coordination of the humanitarian response under the wings of OCHA, a secondary displacement took place in Kirkuk, contacting the people who can’t return to the place of origin are in process by Heartland alliance partner of UNHCR

We have 3 types of returnee 1st one who returned to the area of origin and stay there and the 2nd also returned to the area of origin but they were not accepted to stay by the host community, the 3rd type who went to Kirkuk city some of them were not allowed to stay by the security so they displaced again to another location, all the movements have been tracked by Heartland alliance.

UNAMI got a mission by humanitarian coordinator Miss.Arina it is an interagency mission for Al-Zab she met with the mayor of Al-Zab and the related departments plus she visited one of the families, she encouraged the interagency missions to the district, sub-district, and returnees area to meet the need of families as you mention most of the needs are the shelter, livelihoods, etc. regarding this point OCHA, UNAMI, UNHCR, IOM, and UNDP planning to conduct interagency in district sub-district and villages to see the actual situation to report on that even inside Kirkuk we have a lot of informal sides before and after closing the camps for example Hozairan, Bajwan, and Hay Aljameaa, etc.
