Open Ended Questions

For Concord Public Schools & Concord-Carlisle Regional School District / Superintendent: 1. Please share why you are interested in this position and your unique qualifications for it. I thoroughly enjoyed my years in the Wellesley Public Schools. I learned so much from staff, faculty, fellow administrators, School Committee members and other town officials or staff. It was an immense learning curve supported by many talented and experienced colleagues. The early part of this period coincided with a shift caused by Ed Reform and supported by research that emphasized the use of formative assessment data to inform practice.

Tiered Interventions (RTI) was a new strategy at the time. It integrates the use of formative assessments with a repertory of stratified interventions. Staff received this with some skepticism. I will always be grateful to the teachers who, nevertheless, embraced the pilot. The end of year data confirmed that all but four second grade students across seven elementary schools had attained grade level benchmarks for reading fluency. These results exceeded our expectations and became a transformative moment for all of us as educators. As much as we value autonomy and variability in teaching styles, we witnessed that having a common approach to assessing deficits and applying interventions could benefit students across grade levels and as they transitioned from one grade level to the next. This shared approach across and for sequential grade levels intensified the positive impact on student outcomes.

I miss being able to work with student growth K-12. For example, what one can do to impact longitudinal performance gaps is more challenging when limited to grades 9-12 of a student's career. However, these last three years in a high school only district has definitely

Question Continued broadened my perspective on how much we can STILL do to effectively shift student-learning outcomes. How to implement RTI strategies at the high school level is not at all fully developed in the current research because the focus has been on elementary and then middle school. Being in a high school only district has been an eye opening experience on how nimble such an environment can be to try new things. It has been an exciting three years working with such a highly skilled, dedicated and talented staff. This is what makes me happy to be at Lincoln Sudbury although I miss and appreciate the critical part the K-8 plays in preparing students for 9-12.

Concord/Concord-Carlisle presents a unique opportunity to re-blend my experiences in a K-12 regional school district. I have 11 years of Central Office experience in a K-12 of comparable size and now 3+ years of additional experience directly overseeing a regional district plus a year serving on the Minuteman Regional Vocational School Committee. The Concord/Concord-Carlisle community offers a unique and exciting blend of history and artistic culture. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to work with the staff and community of Concord/Concord-Carlisle to leverage the resources you have available to realize best outcomes for all of your students in this unique environment.

For Concord Public Schools & Concord-Carlisle Regional School District / Superintendent: 2. Please list the five accomplishments in your professional career of which you take the greatest satisfaction and why you do so. 2002-2012 - Construction of a new Wellesley High School

As the Assistant Superintendent I was the administrator primarily responsible for facilities and long range planning. Three architectural studies later starting in 2002 and ending in 2012 a new 280,000sf school was finally built. I worked with a consultant to organize the visioning process, which became the base from which we developed the educational plan. I was the administrative advocate for the program that became the key driver for successful approval for funding by the town and MSBA. This culminated in a successful move from old to new over February vacation 2012 celebrated with an old fashioned Chinese Lion Dance. It was a brutal process from start to end as such projects can be but I feel any antagonistic feelings largely dissipated once the new school was put to use. Other than opening day my most proud moment was being led by the head architect to the center of the structure after the last steel beam had been installed. I was able to visualize the classroom spaces in my head by drawing from my memorization of the floor plan. Since the structure was still skeletal I could 'see through the walls' and see the entire floor plan all at once for all four floors. It was a very special moment indeed.

1987-89 - Hostile Takeover

Although it was a very long time ago and from a ˆ¢‹¸prior lifeˆ¢‹¢, being part of the legal team supporting UK BATUS Corporation’s successful hostile 4.2 billion dollar cash acquisition of CA based Farmers Group Insurance and being part of the same legal team to successfully defend corporate parent B.A.T. against a 6.1 billion dollar junk bond hostile acquisition mounted by Sir James Goldsmith taught me what it was like to be able to 'rise to the occasion' under extraordinarily pressure cooker conditions. It was an incredibly 'heady' experience intellectually because it was cutting edge legally. The magnitude of the sums of money, the irascible personalities and media spotlight only intensified the work environment. It was amazing to be part of such a large coordinated legal team functioning at an international scale with each branch performing unique specialized functions. Since we were working across multiple time zones it was as if the team never stopped, someone was always working on something around the clock. It was a time when the legal environment was just starting to rely on email heavily which enabled us to perform at this unprecedented level of output. It was simply a tremendous experience to be a part of and to learn from. I was immensely proud of our work for the client. Ironically, it also caused me to realize I wanted to expend my energies differently outcome. I abandoned the private sector shortly after to become a teacher.

1996-present - The opportunity to lead

I am extremely appreciative of having had several opportunities to lead at a high level. I am proud of the trust that has been given me in order to lead. I have always given it my best heart and effort to lead toward what is in the best interests of all students. I am appreciative of the 'perch' to broadly and deeply influence policy and practice across a wide berth. I appreciate the opportunity to lead by example, to be a role model for others to learn from my successes and failures (!), especially for women, for those of color and for families raising children with intensive needs. I so appreciate finding ways to bring out the best in teams and in the individuals that serve on those teams. I love being able to foster growth for the adults who work with our children as well as for the children.

2012-2016 - Preparing our students for the future

Question Continued

I am so very excited to be able to work with colleagues to think about how we might best prepare students for a future we don't know. It has been exciting and fulfilling to launch the Global Scholars Program at LS and to be working toward launching the Hub for Innovation. The first encourages students to attain global competency (empathy, language, content and skills guided by their understanding of global dilemmas) on their own terms and through their own design. The latter supports the development of a mindset for social entrepreneurship: helping them to create helpful solutions to real problems. Both of these initiatives offer students an opportunity to apply content and skills from across disciplines outside of the classroom for a future benefit.

2013-2016 - Reflection leading to program improvement

I am so very proud of how the LS Faculty and Staff positively and effectively embraced a third party review of existing programs within the Student Services Department. Within 12 months two/thirds of the recommendations were already well on their way to being implemented. This required retraining on the writing of IEPs, re-establishing entry and exit criteria for all programs, applying for grant funding to found a new in school transition program, re-aligning how ASD and NVLD students are offered services, establishing anew a guidance curriculum for all grades, reorganizing behavioral protocols and supports, and advocating for an increase in nursing services. 24 months later the department has played a pivotal role in re-thinking how supplemental academic supports can be offered more strategically to students who need help but are not on IEPs. In a very short period of time the Department shifted successfully from resolving compliance concerns to breaking new ground in the field of instructional interventions at the high school level.
