DESCRIPTION • The piano is a keyboard percussion instrument, made of wood. • The main body of a piano includes metal strings and small felt-covered hammers that strike the strings. The strings are attached to a metal frame called a plate. If the plate lies extending away from the keys, the piano is known as a grand piano. If the plate sits up and down, facing the keys, the piano is known as an upright piano. • A piano has 88 keys—52 white keys and 36 black keys. • Within the piano there is also a wooden board that vibrates when the keys are played. ThisÁ at, is known as the sounding board. • Eventually, foot pedals were added—one to sustain the sound (damper pedal) and one to soften it (una corda pedal). In many pianos, a middle pedal (sustenuto pedal) has been added, which makes it possible to sustain only some notes. HOW TO PLAY • The player presses down on the keys with the the strings inside the piano. When the key is released, a damper silences the strings. This is called the “action” of the piano. À ngers. FUN FACTS • The piano was invented in the early 18th century by Bartolomeo Cristofori of Florence, Italy. It was similar to a harpsichord, another keyboard percussion instrument. 2 Commissioned by the Central New York Association of Music Teachers (CNYAMT), established in 1931 The Wondrous Finger Lakes The Finger Lakes is a group of 11 lakes in Central New York State. Their long and narrow shapes reminded map-makers of fingers – and thus, they became known as the Finger Lakes. The deep, clear water and pristine beauty of the lakes make them a must-see travel destination. Catherine Rollin Flowing gently

Hans Bischoff (1852–1889) was a German concert pianist and highly-regarded music editor who continues to be respected for his thorough research, attention to detail, and careful consideration of source materials. These newly engraved editions of some of Bach’s most well-known works are based on Bischoff’s analysis of many documents, manuscripts, copies, and fragments. Bischoff’s footnotes and prefatory commentary have been preserved, as well as his interpretive suggestions for performance. Also included are explanations of the ornaments used throughout the works and helpful fingerings. Measure numbers and BWV numbers have been included for easy reference. J. S. Bach
