Flute Ensemble/Masterclass Each week on Monday evenings, 5:30 – 7:30 pm, flute ensemble meets in the choral room. In addition to ensemble playing, this class functions as a techniques and performance class. Flute students not enrolled in this course must plan to attend at least 2 of these classes each semester in order to rehearse their prepared jury repertoire with the accompanists. Topics for Masterclasses will vary during the year and will include Masterclasses and recitals by visiting flutists.

GRADING The assigning of grades in applied music is a subjective decision based on the teacher’s view of a student’s growth, along with the quality and quantity of the work throughout the semester. Weekly Lessons 60% Juries 20% Recital performance 10% Attendance at concerts, masterclasses and recitals 10%

WEEKLY LESSONS Each lesson will be graded based upon the following: 1) Preparation - knowledge of all assigned materials. Weekly assignments should be clear if notebooks are kept assiduously. 2) Punctuality 3) Co-operation 4) Notebook All flutists are encouraged to keep a loose leaf notebook to hold lesson notes and assignments, staff paper for fingerings and technical exercises, class handouts, repertoire lists and a copy of the goal sheet. 5) Practice Requirements: Performance majors - a minimum of 12 hours per week. Music Ed, Music Therapy, Music Business, Music History majors: a minimum of eight hours per week. This difference is to recognize the time constraints required for each degree, not to alter the performance goals for each student. Each student will be expected to develop their performance skills to the best of their ability. These elements of the weekly lessons account for 60% of the final grade.

JURIES All flutists are required to perform juries. The student will perform a work from the standard flute repertoire with piano accompaniment. This is a performance for the entire woodwind faculty and takes place at the end of each semester. Written comments and a grade are given to the student following the jury. This accounts for 20% of the final grade.

RECITAL PERFORMANCE Each semester the flute class performs a recital, either at student recital hour or in a local public venue such as Trinity Church or St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church but also the Carmelite Convent in Covington. Understanding and embracing the importance of public service is an important part of attending Loyola University. To that end, at every Christmas holiday the performs at a local event, hospital or retirement home.

RECITAL & CONCERT ATTENDANCE All flute students are required to attend all flute recitals, excuses permitted with instructor’s permission. Must attend at least one other recital per semester. Must attend at least one Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra concert each semester.
