Auction 83 This took place on 2 December 2017

Instructions given to intending bidders Please post bids to Peter McGowan, Nethergreen House, 9 The Green, Ruddington, Notts NG11 6DY Or email: [email protected] The deadline is Tuesday, 28 November 2017. Late bids cannot be recorded. Ensure you include your current address and contact details. If you are bidding by email, please make sure you have received his confirmation of receipt. Successful bidders living outside the UK will be asked to pay for their lots before despatch. If two bids of the same amount are received for a lot, then the bid received first will take precedence, so early bidding is desirable. All lots now carry reserves, either at a default value of 75% of the estimate or at an undisclosed figure set by the seller. No bid will be accepted below the reserve. Take into account that some of our estimated prices appear rather too modest, and may be well overbid. We don’t claim that these estimates are wholly consistent, so make allowance for this. Remember that revised auction rules, issued earlier this year, now apply. NB: See the members’ page of our website for images of this material. AUCTION REPORT

Reynolds Stone’s armorials in blue and black for Charles Prince of Wales (lots 171-2) achieved £300 each, Sandringham plates in two sizes for Edward VII sold at £250 and £190 (lots 167-8) and six other royal bookplates (lots 117, 162, 163, 166, 169, 170) went for a total of £525. There was intense competition for George Vertue’s allegorical library interior for Lady Oxford, with an early MS date 1728, which fetched a staggering £250 (lot 127). Hogarth’s classic pictorial armorial for John Holland (lot 159) sold for £190. Bartolozzi’s engraving (lot 126) for Sir Joshua Reynolds made £145. Gooden’s very scarce girl with tambourine for Dorothy Moulton Mayer (lot 161) fetched £140, and the Apollo and harbour scene for Samuel Courtauld was bid up to £74. One of Sir Philip Sydenham’s many bookplates, a superb early armorial dated 1699 (lot 70), sold at £120. Selling at £90 each were Kane O’Hara’s premium for TCD, Drew’s Hibernian Academy Dublin premium and a large armorial for Sir Charles Frederick (lots 121, 123 and 128). From the grandson of the stamp and bookplate engraver JAC Harrison came 17 bookplates consigned for sale (lots 142- 9), costing buyers £404.

All these and others were far above estimate, demonstrating keen interest in the high quality bookplates on offer. Of course, some estimates were set too low, and this applied also to early armorials, some of which sold well (the common ones not finding buyers). For example, a £10 estimate for Holland Egerton’s uncommon armorial (lot 96) lay well off the mark, whereas the hammer price of £36 was fair. The present marked-up auction list, which for a time will remain available online, gives readers a view of how the mid-range material sold.

Two-fifths of the auction lots sold at £20 or less. Of these seventy lots there were 34 lots selling at or above estimate for an aggregate hammer price of £533 (pre-sale estimate £405) and 36 lots which together sold for £408 (estimate £611). Buyers here did rather well, notably with lots 4, 9, 10, 17, 20, 22, 23, 24, 36, 55, and 137. There were only 16 lots unsold, namely lots 13, 16, 28, 53, 62, 63, 72, 81, 82, 83, 95, 111, 112, 113, 132, and 151. The total for this auction was £6,431, being £6,149 as detailed below (estimate £3,603, excluding unsolds) plus £282 from sale of six duplicate lots. In our auctions it is usually the absentee bidders who take the greater share, but on this occasion eighteen postal/email bidders purchased 65 lots for £3,025 (estimate £1,565), nine people sent in bids that were insufficient, and eleven members present in person bought 91 lots for £3,124 (estimate £2,038). The mince pies went down well, and the serious bidding in the room was interspersed with some amusing and good-hearted repartee.
