IF Foundation and Pushkin House are pleased to announce the KUPALA NIGHT COUP 2015 OPEN CALL

Calling artists at all stages in their careers working in any media (performance, dance, installation, music, theatre, floristry…) to submit work on the subject of Ivan Kupala – the festival of the summer – and St – celebrated in , and . As the primary elements of water, fire and flora coexist in harmonious symbiosis with earthly laws and its cycles artists around the world are encouraged to attempt proposals considering the role of these building blocks of all manifest creation in divination, purification, foresight and prosperity.

We look for pranks, rituals, ceremonial dance and mischief.

THE JURY

Ariadne Arendt is a cultural practitioner, curator and artist. Joseph Backstein is Artistic Director of the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art and Director of the Moscow Institute for Contemporary Art. Elena Sudakova is Director and Principal Curator of GRAD, the Gallery for Russian Arts and Design. Nana Zhvitiashvili is a Founder Director of the ARTiculate Contemporary Art Fund and former curator of the State Russian Museum (St Petersburg)

PRIZE: Successful applicants will join the Kupala Night ‘take over’ of Pushkin House on the evening of 6 July and the winner announced that evening will have a solo exhibition at Pushkin House later in the year.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

• Artists at all stages in their career and working in any medium are invited to apply. • All applicants will be required to complete a simple application form requested by emailing [email protected] . You will also need to provide an artist’s CV; an artist’s statement of no longer than 300 words; and 3-4 jpegs at no larger than 500kb each of artwork with full information including title, medium, edition number where appropriate, dimensions in cm, year and price for each artwork (where applicable). Please title each jpeg with your surname, first name then title of artwork in apostrophes (e.g. Smith_John_’Untitled’). Artists working with moving image or in performance are required to send 1-3 video links. All artworks submitted must be available to exhibit. All files and images must be Mac readable. All applications should be emailed to [email protected]. A processing fee must be paid by each artist before their application is assessed. UK residents are requested to pay via bank transfer. Account details will be found on the application form. Overseas applicants will be required to make payment via transfer or PayPal and will need to email [email protected] with your full name and address in order to be invoiced. It is ESSENTIAL that you use your full name for reference on any payments made. • Two dimensional artwork(s) must be no larger than 200x150cm. Video projections must be no larger than 150x150cm. All exhibited artwork(s) must be able to be carried through a standard size door. • The artist is responsible for delivery and collection of all artwork(s) if selected for the exhibition and insurance whilst in transit. In case of interest of sale IF FOUNDATION will assume responsibility for arranging delivery or collection of all artwork(s) with the collector. The sale price must be calculated according to the following formula: 50% Artist/30% IF FOUNDATION/20% Pushkin House. Representing galleries will not be factored into sales proceeds.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Pushkin House was created in 1954 by a group of Russian friends in a house in west London as a meeting place for people of all nationalities who are interested in . Today, you can enjoy its programme of Russian literature, poetry, art, film, music, theatre and dance, history, philosophy and politics, in its beautiful 300- year-old home on Bloomsbury Square. Events include lectures and talks, exhibitions, films, plays, concerts and readings, as well as special events for children and families.

Coup, originally founded in April 2011 by artist Iulia Filipovscaia as a hopping organism of self-initiated exhibitions in private and alternative spaces, is the curatorial arm of IF FOUNDATION which supports creation of unique, handmade, raw, found, vintage and recycled works of craftsmanship in all forms from what is. This may include garments constructed out of found vintage fabrics, bio jewellery produced with natural materials that come from flora and fauna, art works made with use of recycled elements. The procurement of these materials must respect the sustainability concept reconciling economic, social and environmental needs.

Coup is in its 8th show running. This is the first Open Call Coup.
