He ad Co ac h The 2006 season launches Joe Behan’s 11th year as head coach of the New York University men’s soccer team. His squad finished the 2005 season with an overall record of 11-7-1, a 3-4 mark in the University Athletic Association, and a berth in the ECAC Metro Championship Tournament. Not only did the Violets win 11 games for the first time since 2002, but they made their debut in the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America)/Adidas Division III Poll at #24 on September 13, 2005. The Violets were ranked as high as #8 in the country on September 27. Several of Behan’s student-athletes were cited for their outstanding individual performances during the 2005 season. Junior Nick Katsanos, sophomore Jeritt Thayer and freshman Chris Wright were named Second Team All-UAA, while sophomore Nicholas Palmer earned Honorable Mention All-UAA. Thayer was selected to the NSCAA/Adidas All-Metro Second Team, while Katsanos was a Third Team honoree. Eight members of the Violets were also cited for their work in the classroom, earning UAA Fall Sport All- Academic accolades. In 2003, the Violets posted an overall record of 9-6-4 (2-4-1 in the UAA), and advanced to the ECAC Division III Metro Championship Tournament for the third consecutive season. In 2002, Behan led the team to an 11-7-2 record, while his 2001 squad recorded a program-record 14 wins and captured its first-ever ECAC Division III Metro Championship. The Violets have enjoyed a recent run of prosperity, posting winning campaigns in four of the past five seasons. “We have achieved our goal to instill a winning tradition at NYU,” Behan said. “Now we must focus on moving up in the UAA.” In 1999, Behan and his assistants earned UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors as his young squad began to re-establish a successful soccer program at NYU. For the first time since 1988, the Violets finished with a winning record (11-6-2). As s i s t a n t Co ac h e s The 2006 season is Nick Penze’s fifth as a men’s soccer assistant coach at New York University. The Violets have produced a 38-29-9 overall record during his tenure, including last season’s 11-7-1 mark. Including last season, Penze has helped lead the Violets to three Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Championship Tournament appearances. In his first season with NYU, Penze helped guide the 2002 team to an 11-7-2 record and a spot in the ECAC Metro Tournament semifinals. A former goalkeeper at Western Illinois University, Penze’s main responsibility with the Violets involves working with the team’s netminders. Under Penze’s tutelage in 2005, Violets’ freshman goalkeeper Chris Wright posted a 0.97 goals against average, 46 saves and three shutouts en route to earning University Athletic Association (UAA) Second Team accolades. “Coach Penze has become a big part of the success of our program,” states head coach Joe Behan. “He has a fantastic work ethic that is ever-present.” Penze graduated with a biology degree from Western Illinois in 1993 and played for the Leathernecks’ men’s soccer team from 1989-93. A former All-Conference, All-Area and team MVP at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, IL, Penze also suited up for the Chicago Kickers and the Chicago Sockers football clubs. In addition to his duties at NYU, Penze also works as a sales engineer for a Chicago- based manufacturing company. A native of Brunswick, Georgia, Penze currently resides in Manhattan with his wife Paige and son Dylan.

Tomasz Stefanowski is in his fourth season as an assistant coach of the New York University men’s soccer team. Among his many duties with the Violets, Stefanowski is responsible for training sessions, game analysis and recruiting. In 2005, the Violets posted an 11-7-1 overall record, a 3-4 mark in the University Athletic Association, and qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Championship Tournament. In 2003, Stefanowski helped lead the Violets to an overall record of 9-6-4 and a berth in the ECAC Tournament quarterfinals. A 1997 graduate of NYU’s Leonard N. School of Business with a bachelor of science degree in finance and international business, Stefanowski was a four- year starter in the midfield for the Violets. He played for current head coach Joe Behan as a senior, served as a team captain and earned the NYU Academic Achievement Award. “Coach Stefanowski’s playing experience with NYU helps our team in many ways on and off the field,” Behan reveals. “Tom’s appetite for the game itself and his ambition for the program’s success give us an extra edge.” Stefanowski has additional experience as the Coach/Founder/Manager of the Gotham Football Club, a team comrpised of former NYU players. The squad plays in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League Third Division, the Urban Soccer League, the Brooklyn United Soccer League, and the Metro Soccer League. Stefanowski also coached an under-16 team in the Cosmopolitan League in 2001-02. Stefanowski, who earned an MBA in finance from NYU in 2005, also serves as a manager for Standard & Poor’s Corporate Value Consulting. He is a native and resident of Elmhurst, NY.

As s i s t a n t Co ac h e s Morad Fareed is in his second season as an assistant coach of the New York University men’s soccer team. A former Violet soccer player, Fareed’s responsibilities include game preparation, training and recruiting. In his first season with the team, Fareed helped lead the Violets to an 11-7-1 overall record, a 3-4 mark in the University Athletic Association (UAA) and a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Championship Tournament. A 2001 graduate of NYU’s College of Arts and Science with a degree in economics, Fareed was a four-year player for the Violets. He tallied 14 goals and 37 points during his career. As a senior captain, Fareed was named team MVP and earned Second Team All-UAA honors. He also received team MVP honors as a freshman. “Morad’s input in everything we do makes a great impact,” head coach Joe Behan says. “He has added a winning mentality that he simply carries with him every day.” Following his time at NYU, Fareed went on to play with the Palestine National Team in 2003 and 2004. His coaching resume includes a stint as an assistant with the U.S. Soccer Academy. In addition to his responsibilities as an assistant coach, Fareed is also the co-founder of International Communications Systems, Inc. A native of Dix Hills, NY, Fareed currently resides in Manhattan.

Gregory Vincenty begins his first season as an assistant coach of the New York University men’s soccer team. Among his many duties with the Violets, Vincenty is responsible for training sessions and physical conditioning. “With Vincenty on board, I am confidant that we will take the program a step further this year,” head coach Joe Behan predicts. A former Infantry Staff Sergeant in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Vincenty was with the United States Army for 17 years. In addition to his soccer skills, Vincenty has an extensive background in boxing. He was a member of the United States Army Boxing Team for nine years and is a two-time Golden Gloves Champion, winning in 1978 and 1979. Currently, Vincenty also works as a personal trainer. He provides private soccer instruction in strength conditioning and endurance, while also offering weight and diet consultations. Vincenty also provides training at Mendez Boxing Gym for amateur and professional gym members and acts as a second corner man at various professional boxing events in both New York and Washington D.C. A New York City native, Vincenty currently resides in the Bronx.
