MINUTES of the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2008 held on Thursday, November 13, 8pm at the Clubhouse, Allen Park, Swanbourne

Meeting opened at 20.06.

1. Attendance: 36 members registered their attendance: see Appendix 1.

2. Apologies: Michael Rovira Chris Rovira Neil Clarke Kris Martinik Geoff Stooke Jeremy Warren

3. Minutes of previous AGM held Wednesday, November 21, 2007 were accepted without modification. Moved I Christian 2nd D Bennett Carried.

4. Financial Report 2008 David Hurst (Hon Treasurer)

Hon Tres noted that the accounts as tables in the Annual Report 2008 omitted a comparison with those of 2007. This was attributable to a formatting error pre- printing. Accounts show $28k depreciation on club assets. This in practice reduces the annual surplus to an $8k deficiency however the club accounts have resulted in a cash flow positive year. Revenue was a little reduced compared with 2007, mainly due to reduced player numbers, i.e. no 5th grade. The 2007 Awards night costs were included in the 2008 accounts whereas revenue was recorded in the 2007 accounts. Miscellaneous Income includes ~$9k from ‘Legends Video’ (produced by Tim Newton)

M. Tolmie asked what Merchandise Stock recorded as nearly $5k included. Hon Tres explained this included existing stocks of merchandise that hadn’t as yet been sold. Inventory under Current Assets is almost exclusively bar stock.

After above questions Tony Rovira moved that the 2008 accounts be accepted. 2nd M Tolmie. Carried.

Stewart Cole thanked the Treasurer, on behalf of the membership, for the work undertaken during the year.

4. Other Committee Reports

D Newton moved that all the reports be considered as one with questions as normal followed by acceptance or otherwise. 2nd S Coldwell. Carried.

Comments: Arthur Auguste observed that a club that started in a room at Steve’s Hotel 20+ years ago now requires >$250k pa to operate. Hon Pres asserted that although substantial funds were expended in the execution of the clubs functions, few luxuries could be observed around the clubhouse. The club runs on a very tight budget.

Ellen Tolmie noted that a list of U18 Representative was not included in either the Rugby Report or in the Juniors report. This may be an administrative oversight. Hon Sec to include in the 2008 minutes. See Appendix 2 below.

Ellen Tolmie moved that the President’s, the Registrar’s, and the Snr & Junior Rugby Reports be accepted. 2nd S Cole. Carried.

5 & 6. Election of Committee of Management AND Election of Non-Committee Appointments.

David Newton thanked the outgoing committee for their efforts in 2008 and noted his appreciation that the bulk of the existing committee were prepared to stand again in 2009. The following appointments were made:

Comments: A Auguste noted his satisfaction in being associated with the club as Patron since 1985, it being particularly gratifying to see many adult members of the club who have progressed from the junior section and remained with the club. D Bennett acknowledged the amount of work expended by Hon Pres. It was much appreciated by him and the membership in general. Bennett also acknowledged the contribution of Hon Sec, Hon Tres and Hon Registrar for their contribution and commitment, as indeed does the wider committee. Membership responded warmly.

7. General Business

Bob Hunter sought a briefing on rugby developments for 2009.

On behalf of the 2008 Rugby Committee Tony Rovira responded: • At the end of the playing season all coaching positions had been declared vacant • Applications were received from many people • Applications received were mostly in response to web advertisement, not as a result of conventional local newspaper adverts, which had cost some $1500. • Rugby Committee had interviewed extensively for 1st/2nd/U20/U18 coaching positions • 1st grade Coach for 2009 (Steve McCullough) had been approved by 2008 committee. • Other appointments yet to be endorsed by committee (although this was scheduled for a general committee meeting immediately succeeding the AGM).

Comments: A Auguste sought clarification of the Rugby Committee membership. This is: • Tony Rovira (Director) • Steve Coldwell • Michael Brain • Steve McFarland (2008 1st grade coach) • Kris Martinik (2008 Club Captain)

Arthur Auguste (AA) asked whether there was any talent coming through. Tony Rovira responded in the affirmative.

Bob Hunter (BH) commented that with the changing nature of the WA Club Competition ‘should Soaks be looking to be more professional?”

D Newton (DN) asserted that that is the intention of the club committee, within the constraints of our financial budget.

BH asserted that we need to continue to grow and wished to encourage the new committee to look at ‘growth’ opportunities.

Nick Sheldrick (NS) asked whether sponsorship be used to recruit players, implying payment to players.

Glen Roberts noted that ‘other clubs’ fly players in and find them employment as a recruitment tool.

M Brain (MB) stated the committee is aware of the semi-professional nature of the competition. MB asserted that committee is taking much of this (semi- professionalism) into account.

Gary Dreyer (visitor/non-financial member) asserted that the club needs to match other clubs and recruit strongly. Need to recruit to fill selected positions. There should be a policy identifying particular playing positions that need strengthening.

Russell Neilson noted that the raising of funds needs to be a coordinated/strategised function. Sponsorship Committee required rather than individual activities.

Arthur August asserted that these arguments/statements appeared to be leading towards a motion to clarify the issues.

NS asserted that the committee needs to have objectives and goal set.

Edna Rovira. Club needs to nurture, retain, and develop new sponsors.

In order to focus the discussion BH moved that:

‘the committee be mandated, within the resources that can be raised, to support the recruitment of players for specific positions, that will not detract from the aspirations of existing club players’. 2nd R Nielson

Speaking in support of the motion AA said that this motion affords the committee the authority to proceed develop the club. Secondly it acknowledges that in today’s game that other clubs recruit to achieve premierships. The 1997 Premiership was achieved after a sub-committee nominated what was required for success. The results speak for themselves.

NS believes that there is a perception within Soaks that overt cash payments might not be the way to go.

Mike Tolmie suggested that have a better chance of player retention if jobs/employment can be found for players.

Tony Rovira reminded the membership that the players recruited before the 1997 premiership played on until their retirements.

Laraine Newton asserted that contracting players was fraught with problems (when they break them).

Denis Bennett spoke against the motion. Overt payments cause player dissention. It provides encouragement to selected players.

Edna Rovira commented that past support to players has been successful. If the club management committee doesn’t control this then external groups can go ahead and do this without management committee involvement – which may not be ideal.

Colin McGregor supported Denis Bennett’s position.

Michael Brain clarified that it was NOT the intention to play players.

DN assured the membership that most of the arguments forwarded have been heard and considered during committee meetings. The issue is really one of detail. We are all focused on a premiership – the process is subject to discussion.

Davis Hurst reminded the membership that club funds are used to pay for fitness trainers. The motion should be about rugby development. He asserted that all financial transactions need to be, and will be, transparent.

NS sought assurance that committee is aware of the current professionalism/recruitment issues. DN asserted that committee is well aware.

At the conclusion of the above discussion Hon Pres called for a show of hands.

In support of the motion: 9 Against the motion: 11 Abstention: 1 Motion defeated.

Other Items:

Ellen Tolmie made a vote of thanks to David Klink for his enormous contribution to the juniors during his tenure as Vice President. Endorsed by the membership.

Arthur August raised awareness of the ‘Michael Brandler Trust’, or which many more recent members may be unaware – and there has been no mention in any reports. (Hon Pres responded that the MBT is not an official part of the clubs activities). AA motivation was to remind us of Michael’s predicament, suggest any contributions could be made through Denny Bennett. DB encouraged us to make contact with Mike when visiting Sydney as he really enjoys the ongoing association with the club of which he is still the highest points scorer.

The President thanked the membership for their attendance and declared the AGM closed at 21.46.

Presidents Report 2009.

At the end of the 2008 season I had anticipated that due to the “downturn” economic pressures on our players, sponsors and volunteers would result in us having a difficult 2009 season, in which we may have been forced into taking a backward step.

I was wrong! “Backward step” is not part of the Soaks culture. In many areas the Club has actually made significant progress, both on and off the field.

Our 6 senior teams remained competitive within the competition; 4 of our teams made finals; 3 of them made grand finals and 2 of them won their Premierships. Not a bad strike rate! Though we did not win the overall Club Championship, I am clear in my own mind that we were the best performing Club in the senior competition.

On the admin side, our audited accounts show that we are in a stronger financial position than we have been for many years. Our sponsorship base is significantly increased. The bar and facilities are improved. Whilst player numbers have remained pretty constant, overall Club membership numbers are up. The reintroduction of the “Marmalade and Jam” and match day programs along with more regular maintenance of the website indicate a, much needed, improvement in our communications.

My thanks go to all our Sponsors, Coaches, Managers, Players, various Sub Committees and individual volunteers. It is your hard work and commitment that has made our 2009 season a success! Overall, it was a pretty outstanding performance, whilst the rest of the World was in recession.

As a retiring President I would, perhaps indulgently, take this opportunity to share a few personal thoughts on a few of the future challenges facing this Club.

One of the most serious challenges is the “big picture”. Within our local competition there are once senior Clubs unable to field a full complement of teams and particularly U18’s and U20’s. Community Rugby seems to be in decline. There can be little satisfaction in being a top Club in a third rate competition! The ARU declare the Sydney comp to be the second tier of rugby in Australia and provide that comp with generous funding. Meanwhile, funding is withdrawn for our senior state team, Gold, so we can’t even tour East and beat up on them! Our State governing body, Rugby WA, starved of funding and voting rights in the ARU, seem to endorse the view that in order to play top class rugby a young player needs to play in the Eastern States. It is a bit of a self fulfilling prophesy isn’t it? One might ask, what is going on here; – economic powerhouse of the Nation – and we put up with this?

The amateur/professional debate will rage on within our Club for many years to come. It is a very serious challenge which, if mishandled, could cause a great deal of damage to our Club. For some “professional” simply means paying players; for others it means a more “professional” approach to the management of our Club. On the one hand we join the world’s oldest profession and on the other we remain gifted amateurs involved in family entertainment. It will take the wisdom of Solomon to find the middle path. I feel that it will be the quality of the debate that determines the quality of the outcome!

It is clear that communications is a problem area for the Club. It is not sufficient just to do the job. If we fail to communicate what has been done, it is as though it had never happened! We miss out on an opportunity to win hearts and minds among our membership, supporters, general public and the authorities. Furthermore we become locked in a “Groundhog Day” forced to waste our time going over the same old ground re‐inventing the wheel. The challenge is to dramatically improve our communications, whilst continuing to do the job.

Again, Thanks to all our hard working volunteers and in particular our outgoing committee members. It has been a pleasure working with you all.

Dave Newton

76 players played less than the 6 games required to qualify this was due to a combination of leaving the club, injury and work commitments. The number of players who qualified for finals having played 6 or more games was 177 so despite a slight fall in numbers their was an increase in eligible players. Players who did not return were emailed and called to survey why they were not returning. Of those who responded a combination of injury and job /Uni commitments seemed to be the major reasons. SENIOR RUGBY REPORT

Associates’ 2009 season showed significant on-field improvement compared to last year. Fielding 6 Senior teams (1s, 2s, 3s, 4s U20s & U18s), we had 4 teams make the finals, 3 of which made their Grand Finals, with 2 teams winning Premierships.

As testament to this being a successful year for Soaks, our club finished as runners-up in the 2009 WA Club Championship award. This award measures the overall success of all clubs fielding Senior teams, and for Soaks to come 2nd out of 17 clubs is a very commendable achievement.

FIRST GRADE finished in 5th position, one win out of the finals, in what has been seen as a disappointing result overall considering the talent available. The team had some great wins often beating more highly fancied opponents, to finish the season with a 10-8 win-loss record, but failure to close out the close games hurt with 4 losses by 7 points or less. However there were some good signs for future seasons, with indications that improvements from previous years are continuing. With injuries keeping some of the more experienced players from the field, the coaches took the opportunity to give younger players experience at this level, and Soaks will be better for that in the future. The side was coached by Steve McCullough and Nick Sheldrick and managed by Russell Neilson.

SECOND GRADE had a great year, finishing as Premiers. At the mid-season mark Soaks sat mid-table with a 7-6 win-loss record. From there the team convincingly won the last 5 matches to finish the home & away season in 3rd place, securing a place in the finals. They then went on to beat Kalamunda in the 1st Semi Final and Cottesloe in the Preliminary Final. Playing against the minor premiers and previously undefeated Nedlands, Soaks played the patterns and executed the game plan to perfection, running out deserved winners by 24-20 and being crowned 2nd Grade Premiers for 2009. The side was coached by Tony Rovira, Arno Visser and Gavin Rahn, and managed initially by Tom Hobbs and followed by Owen Ferguson.

THIRD GRADE also had a great season in 2009, finishing runner-up in the Grand Final. Often under-achievers in previous years, 3s really bonded together this season, performing outstandingly under the coaching of Quany. Losing only one match during the home & away season to finish in 2nd place on the ladder behind minor premiers Kalamunda, the team went into the finals full of confidence. This showed when they convincingly beat Kalamunda in the 2nd Semi Final. However in the Grand Final, Kalamunda bounced back, and in a pulsating match Soaks went down by the narrowest of margins (23-22). Although bitterly disappointed at the result, 3s can be very proud of their achievements this year, and look forward to next season with confidence. The team was coached by Mark Quan and managed by Bert Butler, Debbie Wilson and Leslie Webb.

FOURTH GRADE had a solid season with a 10-8 win-loss record, finishing in 6th place on the ladder and only one win away from a place in the finals. There were plenty of numbers available for 4s this year, and the coaches/managers of the team tried to give everyone plenty of game time, sometimes to the detriment of winning the match. After all, at this level participation and fun is the key, and as Bruce Hughes said in the Marmalade & Jam, this was “a wonderful season of rugby with a wonderful group of players”. The enthusiasm of 4th Grade remained strong throughout the season, and it is certain that they will be back stronger than ever next year. The team was coached and managed by Bruce Hughes with support from Geoff Stooke.

U20s had an excellent season, winning the Premiership after finishing the home & away season in 2nd place on the ladder behind minor premiers UWA. During the year, UWA beat Soaks 3 times, albeit the results were always close. However in the Grand Final, Soaks played outstanding rugby against a better credentialed and much larger UWA team to win a tight match 23-21. The team success was built on a strong and mobile forward pack and a strong running backline delivering a solid, all-round team effort. The high quality of the U20s players in 2009 augers well for future seasons at Soaks. The team was coached by Bob Hunter, Mark Paterson and Tim Ferguson and managed by Martin Cowley.

U18s were a much improved team this year, which is a testament to quality coaching and training from Bear and Razza. The team finished in 3rd place, losing to Kalamunda 20-18 in an epic Preliminary Final battle. Soaks showed glimpses of their early season form, but were pipped at (or by) the post to go down in a heartbreaking 2 point loss. This was very disappointing to all involved, as Soaks had dominated the first ¾ of the season with their superb fitness and enthusiasm, and excellent team work. However losing several key players towards the end of the season to injuries, higher grades, and overseas travel, proved costly. What is very encouraging for the Club is the large number of U18s players who will be playing at high levels at Associates in the years to come. The team was coached by Anthony Brain and Ryan Parkin and managed by Joel Grinham.

SEASON OVERVIEW - Reviewing the 2009 season, it is obvious that Associates players were fitter than the opposition, particularly in the early half of the season. This was due to the pre- season training program implemented by Bear, Razza and Steve Trott, and carried on as a strength and conditioning program throughout the season by Trotty. Much appreciation is given to these guys for all their hard work, and it is hoped that they will continue and expand their efforts for the 2010 season. Also, we thank the sports trainers and other support staff who kept our players healthy and intact, and helped them to recover when they were not.

This season has been very successful for Associates, in part due to a good team effort by all those helping off the field just as it was by those who played on the field.

Finally, it is obvious to me that strong heart and passion, together with a committed team effort, is integral to success. We have that at Soaks, we just need to continue to encourage its growth.

The Rugby Committee thanks all members of Associates for their support and encouragement of the players, teams, coaches and management, and we wish everyone even more success in 2010.

JUNIOR’S REPORT

The Associates Rugby Union Junior Club has completed another successful season with 11 teams taking the field from U7 to U16s. This engaged 220 boys and around 70 parents who coached, managed and lent general support on the field not to mention all the parents who supported off the field and from the sidelines.

Earlier in the season we held our Annual True Colours night which was supported by many parents who had the opportunity of getting to know one another better in a social as opposed to sideline environment.

The club ran several coaching courses including Kick Start, Coaching Kids Rugby programs and a Coaching Development Clinic which rated a special mention from Rugby WA with 15 coaches from Soaks attending. These programs have helped educate and strengthen the coaches within the junior ranks. Players displayed their skills at a variety of arenas playing at Britannia, Joondalup, Kalamunda, Murdoch, Guildford and Subiaco. The boys also won the opportunity to have Wallabies players Wycliff Paulu and David Pocock come and run with them in a training session prior to the Wallabies Test match in Perth.

The junior section of the club was also hugely supportive of the fundraising towards the new carpet raising a hefty sum (nearly 75%) towards the overall cost. Thanks go to the volunteers for ‘encouraging’ the donations from parents and members.

With our numbers in the older junior age groups still decreasing (in part due to the Saturday PSA comp) we are instigating a number of “Taster” Evenings at the Club which we hope will encourage new growth in these age groups. Thus ensuring we are able to field teams in all age groups next year and for the future. Should these prove successful we will look to repeating them in February next year.

Several players were selected in representative teams: Richard Hardwick, Luke Burton and Rob Tucker in the State U15s and Scott Tolmie, Nick Sardinha, Kurt Penny and Ben Enright in the U16s. The WA 16’s went to the National Championships and won the Nick Farr Jones shield for the first time in WA’s history. Kyle Godwin was selected both in the State and the Australian Schoolboys sides and will tour with them to England. Luke Burton, Kyle Cameron, Alex Christian, Richard Hardwick, Kurt Penny have been selected to join the the RugbyWA Junior Academy. Surely the next generation of 1st graders is assured with the continuing success of the juniors.

2009 Junior Season Review

U7 Coaches: Ross Tolmie & Henry Cayley Manager: Gemma Hanlon

Season 2009 proved to be a recruiting year as we had 16 U7’s of which 5 were U6 which is great for the club. These numbers provided opportunities for the older boys to train and play some games up in the 8’s to further advance their skills and give the younger kids a bit more game time in the sevens.

The improvement in all boys was outstanding with the younger boys, who we could not get to train initially, training well and the older ones showed all the skills with intimidating defence and awesome attack. They will certainly be a force in the U8’s next year. ------

U8 Coach: Matt Bright Manager: Jane Edwards

The U8’s season has been dynamic to say the least. Initially we only had eight players registered, which is exactly the number of players required to play a game of Walla Rugby. Some of the U7’s ended up helping out and then became regular and instrumental members of the team, ensuring that we had enough players each week. The focus of the year was on maintaining a defensive line, running forward with the ball and being team players. It was a testament to the boys that they displayed these qualities each week which resulted in the boys being very competitive throughout the season. The boys showed an extreme amount of natural talent and played the game in the spirit of rugby.

U9 Gold Coaches: Mark Broome, Duncan Booth Manager: Lisa Shilton & Lu Anderson

Early in 2009 the boys from U9 Gold stepped up to the challenge of incorporating tackle, rucks and mauls into their game. It is a significant change to the rules of touch they experience in U8’s and as a whole they relished the development. As coaches it was especially good to see the transition for individual players as they worked out how to put in an effective tackle. Any doubts about how this was done were dispelled when Sean joined the team and proceeded to demonstrate tackles would be proud of.

The other big achievement was developing a team approach on the back of good positional play. As the season progressed we saw more and more positional play in the matches which led to some good teamwork in both attack and defence.

A motivated and hard working group the boys seemed to enjoy the year and managed to learn something along the way. A solid year on which they will be able to build, bettering their skills to continue their rugby journey. ------

U9 Green Coaches: Marty Philips, Simon Youngleson Managers: Wendy Eastland

We had a very successful season that saw all of the boys develop individually and learn to play an entertaining brand of rugby. As usual we had an assortment of backgrounds and skill levels but all showed great improvement within the first two or three games and they soon settled into a winning style. In this age group, their willingness to score tries is already instinctive so we concentrated at training on the basic fundamentals of set plays, attacking at the breakdown and committed defence. With these skills they were able to learn they could score twice as many tries by putting the pressure on and were able to steal a lot of possession. The final game gave good indication of where we had landed with a very entertaining 14-2 caning of Neddies. Always well supported every game by a dedicated bunch of coaches, managers and parents, it was always great to watch the U9 greens play the game in such spirit and to sing the club song. We hope to see you all in the U10s in 2010.

U10 Coach: Rob Moran Managers: Graham Gallop, Mick Donovan, Helen Jones

2009 proved to be a great year of development for the U10s! While a number of our boys have come up through the ranks, we found by the time our first game was upon us that at least half of our squad were totally new to the game, and therefore were on a very steep learning curve. It was a real credit to both our experienced players who made their new teammates feel welcome, and to the new players who really embraced the game, that we were able to achieve so much success during the year. On reflection we probably only lost three matches for the year, and those were to teams who were well advanced in their general development. We found that there is a big leap from U9s to U10s both in terms of skill level and also there was far more emphasis on the physical side of the game. Sorry - much harder training next year boys! The coaches and parents were delighted to see the game by game improvement by the team, and it was great to see a much stronger reliance on team work, some of the tries towards the end of the season were simply dazzling! We have a number of boys in our squad who show genuine talent, and we can’t wait until next year to see the progression of the team into the next grade!

U11 Coaches: Bob Hunter, Harvey Pickup & Kevin O’Sullivan Manager: Dale Whelan

The 2009 season for the Soaks U/11 was a very successful one with tremendous development as a team group. The most positive aspect was that everyone continued to have a go no matter what their skill set or size. Through the season the team grew from our first games where we relied on individual skills to get us through, to the end where we were playing as a cohesive team unit with everyone contributing. There were some excellent group performances, particularly in the last matches of the season where we defeated a number of the better sides in very positive fashion. The 5 tries to Nil victory over a strong Nedlands side was a real highlight. In the end the team finished a strong 3rd, only just behind 2nd place and only one win and a bit away from the top spot. An excellent effort that in the higher grades would have seen the team contesting finals. We look forward to continuing this progress next year.

U12 Coaches: Vioni Masibaka, Derick Markwell, Manager: Neil Davis

2009 was an interesting season at the end of which we finished mid table having won the majority of our games. Our returning players honed skills learnt in previous years and along with players not only new to the club this year but also new to rugby, went on to learn new concepts and work well as a team.

At the end of the season the U12’s entered the Guildford 7’s tournament where they unfortunately lost in the semi final.

We look forward to the boys returning next year and taking them up another level when we play the full game of 15 a side.

U13 Coaches: Richard Clark, David Lewis, Clive Norman Manager: Alistair Cowie

After finishing in the top four in season 08 there was a feeling, that we should make the finals this year. The boys got down to the hard work and started to gel together, the general feel was a good one. We had a pre-season scratch match against Wanneroo - the team from Wanneroo was a fair bit larger than our lads, the game was lost by one conversion, but we made a fist of it. The first two games of the season went well but by game three the wheels fell off unfortunately after this there was some movement between the two divisions which saw our two earlier conquests drop down to the lower division leaving us floundering in the land of the giants and wondering why it was our boys had not grown over the summer!

Each week the boys would turn up to training and work hard, their skills improved and by the end of the season there was a remarkable difference in their ability to take on the larger boys. Several of the final games were very competitive. Some of the pre season confidence was returning but the size of the opposition proved too much again and again. With the improvement in their skill’s this year season 2010 should be an interesting and very productive season.

U14 Green & Gold Coaches: Pat Partridge, Pat Noonan, Luc Delriviere, Ryan Russell, Dylan Tyack, Darren Van Wyk Managers: Nicky Smith, Leigh Locke and Tracey Negus

We stared the season with fewer players than we needed to be able to play two teams but after some recruiting by a few of our regular players we ended up with 36 players; enough to field two teams. Our Green Team played in the Gold Division and the Gold Team played in the Swan Division. We worked very hard on our tackling and technique which paid huge dividends as the players discovered they could tackle bigger players and bring them to ground. This gave them a tremendous amount of confidence which grew from one week to the next as they continued to win.

Both teams made the preliminary finals as the Green Team finished 3rd overall after only losing to Southern Lions, Mandurah & Palmyra. The Gold Team finished 4th overall which was a great result for them seeing that they had to forfeit one of their games.

The Gold Team played Rockingham but unfortunately they lost to a bigger side 29-0. Unfortunately Rockingham scored all 29 points in the first 15 minutes. There were no points scored after this in what was a closer match than the score might suggest.

The Green Team went into the final against Mandurah as underdogs. Mandurah had beaten us in the tournament 26-12. However the boys were more than ever determined to win and this they did very comfortably with a 48-5 victory. This was perhaps the best game that the boys played all season as everything came together.

The Green Team progressed to play Southern Lions in the Semi Final. Unfortunately we lost 14-7 but overall a good competitive season for both teams.

U16 Coaches: Maurits Bruns, Aidan Lagan & Richard Jackson Manager: Ellen Tolmie

The 2009 season for the U16 was in a way, a great success. Although not so much based on a win-loss record, but for the grit and determination the team showed against some very tough opposition. This year the U16’s were made up of both U16 and U15 players, as well as 4 new players who had never played rugby before. Many of the U16 boys were lost to the PSA competition which was very unfortunate however, this meant that the rest of the players had to step up to the mark for every game which they did with a positive and "never surrender" attitude. The improvement the team showed throughout the season is a credit to the boys themselves and the effort the coaching and management staff put in with a great pro-active and not re-active effort for the whole season.
