Systems of Perception Rationalism: Pilate When this is the sole guide in discovering about God, then the supernatural must be explained by human understanding. All that cannot be explained is rejected as untrue. Empiricism: Thomas Pursuing knowledge through observation and experiment. Must see, smell, teach, hear or taste it or not true! Faith: believers “By faith we understand” (Heb 11:3)= faith-perception A person reads the Bible, sees a fact of spiritual truth or phenomenon and accepts it by faith without further proof Theology Proper 7 Is faith rational? 1. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3 • Children accept things as true because of a trust in a person. • By faith all biblical facts are accepted because of a trust in His person and Word 2. Is not irrational, nor unreasonable, nor without evidence. Nature shows that God is (Ps 19:1-6; Ro 1:19-20) 3. John came to the tomb in unbelief, saw the evidence, remembered Jesus’ words and believed (Jn 20:30-31). -

Introduction – Theology Proper answers the question. What is God like? Heretical conflicts clarified our orthodox doctrines of Scripture. And there are two principles to determine orthodox doctrine. • God has revealed all we need to know through His inspired word. • The Holy Spirit will teach and guide the church into all truth. 1C. For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. [Rom 15:4 NASB] 2C. "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. [Jhn 16:13 NASB] 3C. 1. The Nature of Theology Definition i) General Definition: The term theology comes from the combination of theos (Greek for god) and logos (Greek for word or dialogue). Theology is most broadly understood as a "discussion regarding God" (It is often said that theology may be defined as a "discussion of God" which intends the same meaning, though this is all too often misunderstood to mean "discussion by God") Thus any religion involving a god worthy of dialogue will require some form of theology. (Of course once you step out of western tradition, Greek terminology quickly loses its precision.) ii) Specific Definition: Christian Theology involves the entire study of God and His relation to man and the universe, while specifically incorporating all biblical doctrines. Difference between Theology and "Bible Doctrine" i) Bible Doctrine restricts itself to only what is taught in the Bible. ii) Theology goes to other sources of truth. Example: "Canonicity of the Bible" (Ie, The process through which the books of the Bible were decided upon) (a) Canonicity involves historical truths (as to how canonicity occurred) not recorded in the Bible. (b) One's stance on canonicity involves logical truths (as to what tests were used for canonicity) not recorded in the Bible. Example: Arguments for the Existence of God (a) Such arguments involve philosophical truths not expressed in the Bible. (b) Such arguments involve logical truths not expressed in the Bible. iii) Theology includes Bible Doctrine Theologians will at times study more than the Bible. (a) There is much truth not found in the Bible, such as in Science, History and Religion. -

Theological Studies 55 (1994) JESUS AND SALVATION: AN ESSAY IN INTERPRETATION ROGER HAIGHT, S.J. Weston School of Theology HE CONCEPT of salvation is central to Christianity. From a historical T perspective, the experience of Jesus as savior is the basis from which the Christian movement sprang. This religion arose and contin ues to exist because people experience Jesus as a bringer of God's salvation. Christology in its narrow sense of defining the status of Jesus before God and human beings depends upon soteriology. Yet despite this centrality and importance, the Church has never formu lated a conciliar definition of salvation nor provided a universally ac cepted conception. This is not necessarily something negative, but it still leaves us with a pluralism in the domain of the theology of sal vation, the meaning of which remains open and fluid. Salvation is also elusive: like time, every Christian knows its meaning until asked to explain it. Because of its centrality, the problems that surround the concept of salvation are rendered more grave. Many of the traditional expres sions of how Jesus saves are expressed in myths that no longer com municate to educated Christians; some are even offensive. Some of the traditional theological "explanations" of salvation through Christ do no better. It is our intention that religious programs will promote positive values and moral practices to foster healthy relationships, especially within the families of those under our jurisdiction and within the communities to which they are returning. As a Department, we commit to providing religious as well as cultural opportunities for offenders within available resources, while maintaining facility security, safety, health and orderly operations. The Department will not endorse any religious faith or cultural group, but we will ensure that religious programming is consistent with the provisions of federal and state statutes, and will work hard with the Religious, Cultural and Faith Communities to ensure that the needs of the incarcerated community are fairly met. This desk manual has been prepared for use by chaplains, administrators and other staff of the Washington State Department of Corrections. It is not meant to be an exhaustive study of all religions. It does provide a brief background of most religions having participants housed in Washington prisons. This manual is intended to provide general guidelines, and define practice and procedure for Washington State Department of Corrections institutions. It is intended to be used in conjunction with Department policy. While it does not confer theological expertise, it will, provide correctional workers with the information necessary to respond too many of the religious concerns commonly encountered. -
The Confessional Purgation of the Soul in the Poetry of Robert Lowell
Department of English The Flamekeeper: The Confessional Purgation of the Soul in the Poetry of Robert Lowell Ryan Jurison Degree of Bachelor, 15 points Literature Spring Term, 2020 Supervisor: Claudia Egerer Abstract This essay is a critical textual analysis of the poetry of Robert Lowell with focus on religious symbolism used in his work, and the Catholic theology which informed it. This results in a new, contrasting interpretation to the conventional view that he had abandoned his religious focus by mid-career, while accounting for his own assessment that he had not. Insights gained through this analysis, combined with those relating to Lowell’s personal history, reframe his confessional poetry while bolstering this claim. Through this study, poems selected from Lord Weary’s Castle, The Mills of the Kavanaughs, Life Studies and For the Union Dead are reinterpreted in order to explore the consequences of what Lowell could have intended with this stylistic modification, and discover the religiosity that he claimed was hidden. Lowell’s confessional poetry up until 1964 is examined and recast as the anguished wails of a Catholic soul in Purgatory. This fresh approach to one of America’s finest twentieth-century poets provides a novel foundation for the reinterpretation of the entirety of Lowell’s professional oeuvre. 132 TORCH TRINITY JOURNAL 6 (2003) ECCLESIOLOGICAL CHRISTOLOGY IN THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS OF THE BOOK OF REVELATION Chul Hae Kim* INTRODUCTION Among the twenty-seven New Testament books, the Book of Revelation has been the most neglected book. Many people consider it taboo to interpret or read it.1 This is because this book contains many symbols , visions and other characteristics, as do most apocalyptic writings. On the other hand, this book is so significant that every believer should read, hear, and practice it to enjoy the ultimate blessing promised by God. 2 However, as the history of New Testament interpretation shows, many believers brought negative results and fell into the trap of destruction instead of enjoying the promised blessing in the book of Revelation. They failed because of their ignorance and instability, which distorted the Word of God, as the Apostle Peter warned in his second letter (3:15-16).3 It is the same that even today, immature and hasty interpretation of this book may cause a serious disaster which is often overlooked. The correct interpretation is possible only when one understands the literary genre of the book and basic interpretation skills for the genre. As G. K. Beale points out in his NIGTC commentary on the book of Revelation, “John utilized the three genres of apocalyptic, *Rev. McLendon is Assistant Professor of Theology at Grand Canyon University and Grand Canyon Theological Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona. Introduction Due in part to its late arrival within systematic theological loci, ecclesiology remains fertile soil for wide-ranging investigative inquiries from academic scholars and thoughtful clergy.1 Paul Avis, doyen of academic ecclesiology, positions the discipline in the forefront of modern theological attention, even claiming, “during the past couple of centuries, ecclesiology became a major theological discipline; today, at the beginning of the twenty-first century of the Christian era, it is at the heart of theological research and debate.”2 Ecclesiology lies at the heart of modern theological dialogue because the identity, purpose, and power of the church are inextricably connected to all other biblical and theological emphases. One can hardly discuss any salient aspect of Christianity without acknowledging its connection to the church as God’s people, or explain in some sense how God uses this eschatological people as the conduit through which he presently engages human history.3 As research progresses to analyze global ecclesiological phenomena or specific issues within any longstanding church tradition, debates will persist as interlocutors grapple with multiform critiques and proposals.4 Broadly speaking, contemporary theological works fall within two approaches. One approach is decidedly categorical and/or descriptive.
