Hello everyone

It’s that time again when I am writing to you for the church magazine. It’s surprising how quickly the time for the next letter comes around. Doesn’t seem like a month since I wrote the last one. Times flies so they say and time certainly seems to go more quickly the older you get.

We are well into the hottest two months of the year. I hope it doesn’t get much hotter its bad enough now. No, I would not like to be back in the UK I will put up with this weather. The pool beckons and is a great way of cooling down. It’s a time for some of us to visit family in the UK and other far away destinations or for our families to come and join us for a week or three. It’s always good to see them but sometimes, I think, we are relieved when they have gone.

As I said last month this time in the church’s year is the time when we hear of Jesus ministry, His miracles and parables. Just recently we heard the parable of the Good Samaritan and soon after that another parable about a good neighbour. The challenge there for us is how we interpret the parable and how we use the ways Jesus described the characters to shape out faith. Our faith should be ‘faith in action’ in other words we should try to be like the Good Samaritan and make ourselves available to help those in need...those who need our help. Are we prepared to give of ourselves for the sake of others? To go to them in times of distress and to offer them our support. You may say but that will cost us time and money? So what? Surely as Christians this is what we should be doing. Also remember Jesus does not ask us to do the impossible only the possible and He will provide us with the skills necessary to do the ‘job’ but we do need to listen to Him for guidance. Jesus will do the impossible, not us, rest assured. We need to put others before ourselves and do all we can to support those in need. Who is our neighbour? Anyone in need...not just the family next door...anyone in need. If we were in trouble would we care who offered us aid? Would we worry who or what they were? I am sure we would not care only appreciate the help. Perhaps afterwards we may question them as to why they helped us and what had motivated them.

As you know we have a number of people on our prayer list please remember to pray for them wherever you are, that they may receive God’s comfort and healing power and to pray for those who are travelling that they have safe journeys and return safely. Also remember all those who are living in war torn areas, those who do not know where their next mouthful of foods is coming from, those who are persecuted for their faith yet still continue to worship the Lord and those who are suffering from the result of natural disasters.

ONE. One tree can make a forest: One smile can begin a friendship: One hand can lift a soul: One word can frame a goal: One candle can wipe out darkness: One laugh can conquer gloom: One hope can raise your spirits: One touch can show you care: One Iife can make a difference, be that one today.

May the Lord bless you, your family and friends and be with you always throughout the coming days.

Yours in Christ

Pastora Jeanie

As many of you may know Tracey will be going to Cape Town on holiday for ten days during which time she will be attending a conference. Thanks to the benefactor who made this possible and our best wishes go to Tracey for a well-deserved break. The following snippets of news are gleaned from Tracey’s Facebook page.

July 6 Rewind! Today really hasn't gone according to plan - starting from 11PM last night! Can we pretend its Friday night and still have a 2 day weekend to come! SCHOCK NEWS!

Just before the family service, last month, I had a long whatsapp communication with Jae, on behalf of the family, whilst on holiday in Croatia. All seems to be well and as I mentioned in the family service, they send love to all at La Siesta, Michael is waiting to hear as to where his next posting will be, could be back to Spain, although unfortunately, not in our area, but it is more than likely to be a posting to Sicily. The "children" Jillaine , who is currently doing voluntary work in Guatamala, and Mitchell, who has just graduated from college, and in August will be starting a 3 year apprenticeship in his qualified subject, stone masonry, in Erhart, Germany, are both doing very well . Some of you may well remember Jae's parents who visited our Church frequently, especially, father Chuck, who sang with us in the Choir, Well the family will be visiting them in Arizona soon, and I have asked Jae to give them regards from us all in La Siesta. Now for those who are unaware of this family, Jae was an Elder , a Sunday School helper, and also preached the Gospel several times , when we were in need. Michael sang tenor in the choir and was also a volunteer reader , The whole family contributed to the welfare of our Church, and are greatly missed. Please remember them , as a family, in your prayers as they take another step into an unknown future.

FRANCIS ORMOND A GREAT SCOTTISH PRESBYTERIAN PHILANTHROPIST IN Part 1

In Gordon’s sermon at the service on July 7th mention was made of a visit Fiona and I made to the Scots’ Church in in April 2007. We were lucky enough to have been noticed by the Church Officer who took us to meet the Minister with whom we had a long chat including details of Francis Ormond’s connection with the Church. Herein we become involved in a long but interesting story which is best begun at the beginning. In the last few weeks of my seagoing career I was approached by the ship’s Bosun. He lived in Coatbridge just outside Glasgow and each week his wife sent him a copy of the local newspaper. In the latest edition there was a letter from a local resident, Mr Ormond, who had received a letter from Mrs. Judy Ormond in Natalia, South Australia. She had been researching the Ormond family for many years but explained that there was a branch of the family very important to her research but all she knew was that the origins were in North Lanarkshire and that a Jessie Ormond had married James Cook in 1871. They had a son named Ormond Cook and it became a tradition that the eldest son of succeeding generations were christened with Ormond as a Christian name. This fitted, as my grandfather was the first Ormond Cook, my father the second and I the third as although I have never used the name it is indeed one of my own. The tradition carries on in my nephew Alan Ormond Cook but will die out as between myself and my two nephews we managed to produce five girls! I duly contacted Mrs. Ormond and a long correspondence ensued culminating in Fiona and I visiting the family in Natalia in 2007. Twelve years on we are still in touch. She was particularly interested in finding a connection with Francis Ormond as this had been assumed for many years but never definitively proven. Our first piece of information was gleaned from a very comprehensive family tree starting with my great-great grandfather. There were several pencilled notations Newsletter 297 Page 6 La Siesta Evangelical Church August 2019

added over the years including one against the name of my great grandmother Jessie

Ormond which read “her brother Francis went to Melbourne and founded the institute”.

Unfortunately this cannot be correct as a further notation on the back of the document describes her as the daughter of Hugh Ormond, English teacher of Stevenston in Ayrshire but I do think there may be some connection given that the rumour existed separately in and Australia. Perhaps cousin rather than brother. He was born in Aberdeen in 1827. His father Captain Francis Ormond commanded the barque “John Bull”, the first to take British settlers to the new colony at Melbourne in 1840 and the next year purchased the barque “Tuscan” to take his family to Australia and they finally settled at the settlement. Captain Ormond returned to Melbourne area and bought a small near which he gave to Francis, aged 19, to run. He did so successfully and over the next few years the family prospered greatly and Francis bought out his father. In 1851 he married Ann Grieves, sold his properties and purchased the 30,000 acre estate at Borriyalloak near Skipton. In his first experience of hiring labour for his father he realised that the men were totally illiterate and he undertook the task of teaching them in the evenings, his first venture in education. As he acquired the Borriyallock property in his own right he established a school for the children of his workers. In 1856 he entered into negotiations with the Presbytery of Melbourne and the next year a brick built church was constructed at Skipton and a minister appointed to the new of Mount Emu Creek. In 1860 he made his first visit to and was much impressed by Thomas Guthrie and his “Ragged Schools” charity. On return to Melbourne he began to take a strong interest in philanthropic endeavours and in 1872 made the first of his substantial donations, giving £1,000 towards the establishment of a scholarship at the Presbyterian Theological Hall in Melbourne. After his father died in 1875, Ormond and his wife moved from Skipton to Melbourne. He purchased a house in Toorak, and later assisted with the establishment of the Presbyterian church in Toorak. Ormond was a devout Presbyterian and an elder in the church. When the question of establishing a Presbyterian college at the was raised in 1877, he pledged £10,000 to the appeal. At the opening of the college on 18 March 1881, it was announced that it would be officially named in honour of his major contribution. Over his lifetime, Ormond donated almost £40,000 towards its complete construction. TO BE CONTINUED NEXT MONTH Newsletter 297 Page 7 La Siesta Evangelical Church August 2019

SUE RETIRES AS CHURCH SECRETARY

As had been planned, Sue Stacey left the post of Church Secretary which she has most efficiently carried out for several years at the end of June. Following her last Elders’ Meeting on June 21st the Elders plus Pastor Keith repaired to the Restaurante Campobello for a celebratory meal at the end of which a special cake in the shape of a specially designed Harrods handbag, a well known weakness of Sue, was presented. At the Family Service of June 30th, on behalf of the congregation, Pastor Keith presented Sue with a token for Corte Ingles, her favourite Spanish retailer, and Jack Doonan, Senior Elder, presented her with a bouquet of flowers. At the service of July 14th, Sue proudly showed us what she had chosen. Assuredly there are no prizes for guessing what that was to be! We all join to thank Sue for the wonderful job she has done for our Church and our congregation.

PRAYER FOR AUGUST

Jesus said.

'I am the light of the world, no followers of mine shall walk in darkness. A candle is a reminder, It recall Jesus, the one true light, Whom darkness could not extinguish. A candle is a gift, Burning itself out, it give light to others. A candle is a symbol, It speaks of light and hope and warmth and love. A candle is a sign, It reminds us of the prayers of God's people. A candle is a sign of peace and quiet, as at the beginning of our services. Jesus said 'Let your light Shine' Blessings to you all and hope all your prayers be answered.

OUR CHURCH

La Siesta Evangelical Church is an ecumenical English speaking congregation drawn from Baptists, Methodists, United Reform, Church of Scotland, Presbyterian Church in Ireland and several other denominations. We belong to the Iglesia Evangélica Española or Spanish Evangelical Church, a Presbyterian Church in which we are part of the Presbytery of Levante. Our Membership Secretary is Helen Tudor and you should contact her or any other Elder at any service if you are interested in joining our Church. Helen´s telephone number appears in the Elders section on this page.

VISITORS If you are a visitor we cordially invite you to sign the visitors' book at the front door. We do have many visitors especially in the holiday months and it is very easy for "new faces" to be missed. You will notice that the Elders and members of the Fellowship Committee are identified by badges and we urge you to attend the refreshments after the service and to introduce yourselves. We are really interested in meeting visitors to our services.
