DEDICATION

This 1964 PAEAN is dedicated to Miss Madge Burnham and Miss Hazel Wakefield in token of our highest esteem and respect. Because of their most excellent qualities as teachers, their logical and under standing kindness, their keen sense of humor, and their wonderful personalities, we shall never forget these two people. Their lasting in fluence in the fields of Spanish and mathematics is evident in the suc cess of the many students that they have so patiently and carefully taught. It is indeed with great affection, appreciation, and gratitude that we dedicate this book to them upon their retirement, and wish them great happiness in their years of relaxation.

The teachers and administrators

are especially important to us stu

dents of Battle Creek Central, for they

constantly seek to develop our minds

and character through careful guidance.

As the year draws to a close, we be

come aware of how much we really ap

preciate the assistance of our admin

istrators whose help and advice

will always be remembered.

HONOR SOCIETY

The students who are in the top fifteen per cent of the graduating class of 1964 were elected to the National Honor Society to which Central was admitted in 1925. Eligibility for this high honor is determined by the students’ academic ratings from the ninth through the twelfth grade. Each grade is given a numerical value and the average is then figured by the point system.

Certificates and emblems were awarded to each member at the annual installa tion in May. All the recipients of these honors deserve the greatest praise and sin- cerest congratulations for their scholastic achievement.

A L e tte r fro m the Juniors

Fellow Students,

We the Class of 1965 would like to thank the Class of 1964 for the outstanding work they have done this year to help our school. We should like to wish each of you the best of luck.

This year the Junior Class of Battle Creek Central High School has been active in several things. We started out last fall with our beauti ful Homecoming float; although it didn’t win, we had lots of fun build ing it. The Juniors also donated $100 to the Battle Creek Hospital Fund.

Much time was spent in planning the Junior Prom, “Moon River,” which was an outstanding prom with unique decorations and soft, sweet music.

Although we sadly bid farewell to the Senior Class of this year, we can assure them that we will do our very best as the leaders of Central next year.

Sincerely, The Officers of the Class of 1965

Last fall the Sophomore Class tragically lost one of its members, William McKay, in an automobile accident on M-89 near Gull Lake. Although he attended Central for only a short time, the entire stu dent body and the administration felt a personal loss with his sud den death.

" f r o m the Sophomo r e s

Fellow Classmates,

The Class of 1966 would like to bid the Class of 1964 a fond fare well and wish them good luck in the years to come. The Sophomore Class will long remember those Seniors who were so helpful and patient throughout the school year. We hope that we will be able to carry on the traditions set before us by the Seniors.

The Sophomores displayed a great amount of talent in extra-cur ricular activities as well as in scholastic ability. We participated in many clubs, athletics, and the Band Follies. We also held the annual “Sophomore Swing.”

Each Sophomore looks back on the 1963-1964 school year as being not only eventful, but also educational and rewarding. At the same time, they look forward to the coming school year in hopes that it too, will be filled with memorable experiences.

Sincerely,

The Officers of the Class of 1966

The various organizations and

clubs of Battle Creek Central make

it possible for almost every student to

develop a particular interest. In many

clubs additional knowledge is frequently

obtained in an interesting manner, and

in others, service to the school and to

the community is of major impor

tance. Whatever its purpose, each

organization is of value to us.

ORGANIZATIONS The 1963-64 Student Council officers were, from left to right: Joe Blythe, president; Robin Raley, vice president; Gayle Kuchenreuther, recording secretary; Ann Ahlschwede, corresponding secretary; Marcia Graham, treasurer; and Jerry McWilliams, parliamentarian.

STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS

Serving on the Battle Creek Central Student Council is an excellent experience for the students elected as homeroom representatives. In addition to learning many things about the school’s activities, the council members also became well acquainted with parliamentary procedure.

STUDENT COUNCIL

This year’s Student Council worked hard and deserves much recognition for its accomplishments. Last fall, under the chairmanship of Gayle Owen, the big Homecoming project was very successfully completed. Other profit-making activities included the sale of the Student Directory, the Christmas dance, and the annual Twirp Dance, “How Sweet It Is.” The Student Council of this past year is also to be commended for the improved assemblies and the school activities, such as dress-up days.

Mr. Floyd Oglesby, the Student Council adviser, contributed many hours of hard work and under standing in helping the council to complete a succ3ssful year.

Pete Clancey, posing as Santa Claus, helped with the promotion of the annual Christmas Basket Project.

The employees of the school store for the 1963-64 school year were, from left to right: Mr. Don C. Clark, adviser; Bob Embury, assistant manager; John McIntosh, manager; and workers, Margaret Organ, Karl Millard, Carolyn Black, Roberta Clutter, and Dave Moore.

SCHOOL STORE

Mr. Clark, Virginia Flint, Bob Embury, and John McIntosh discuss school store business.

The School Store is managed and staffed by the top qualified students from the two-year Distributive Educa tion Program of Central. These students major in Retail Merchandising and Ap plied Business and Management, under the direction of Mr. D. C. Clark, Dis tributive Education Coordinator. The management of the store set up the sales budgets, purchases, merchandise inven tory control, and expense control. Miss Virginia Flint served as the bookkeeper and accountant with all the records of sales, purchases, expenses, and payments of the accounts. All the profits of the store supported the entire budget of the Student Council.

MATH CLUB

The Mathematics Club has spent a very interesting and profitable year. The highlight was a trip to the Sage Project at Fort Custer where the members toured the enormous computer and radar track ing facility. The computer center at the Channing Financial Company was also visited. Several excellent speakers addressed the group during the year, including two instructors from Kellogg Community College, two students who attended the Science Institute at M. S. U., and a speaker from General Foods. At the final meeting, several seniors of the honor section gave their reports which were prepared during the semester for the course in Advanced Mathematics.

As one of the language clubs, the French Club held its meetings jointly with the Latin and Spanish Clubs. The various topics of the programs for the club gatherings provided an interesting and exciting evening for the members about once a month.

One of the most enjoyable language club meetings was the Christmas party at which door prizes were won by members of the various clubs, and Christmas cookies that were beautifully decorated were served with punch.

SPANISH CLUB

The Spanish Club met together with the French and Latin Clubs throughout the year. The only membership requirement was that each student must have had at least one year of Spanish. This year the club sponsored several interesting programs, as can be seen from the program schedule on the Latin Club’s page. The Spanish Club truly contributed much to its members’ knowledge of Spain and Latin America, as well as added fun and enjoyment to the re gular school activities.

Miss MacDonald was the guest speaker at the December meeting. She presented a very colorful program about Spain.

COMMERCIAL CLUB

The Commercial Club has for its club slogan, “Service Is Our Major Product,” which has been proven by many events this past year.

The major service project this year was the Fort Custer State Home. During the Christmas season, the Commercial Club actually decorated miles and miles of corridors throughout the entire home and deliv ered over 800 toys, games, and personal items to the hundreds of patients.

The Commercial Club worked at the conces sion stand during the regional and state tournaments.

108 One of their largest events was the operation of the concessions business for the Battle Creek Cen tral Bearcat games, and in addition, the St. Philip High School football games at C. W. Post Field, the Kellogg Community College home basketball games, the Battle Creek Warrior semi-professional home basketball games, the All-City Junior High Basketball Tournament games, the Battle Creek Council of Veterans of Foreign Wars Children’s Circus, a pro-boxing and a pro-wresttling show, and the region al state wrestling tournaments. The biggest event, however, was the District and Regional State Bas ketball Tournaments with over 18,000 fans patronizing the concessions stands. The profits from the Commercial Club concession business were shared equally with the Athletic Department of Central.

The club was also very active in the Cooperative Education Club of Michigan, and attended the 18th annual convention at Michigan State University on April 7.

There were many social events included in the Commercial Club’s activities. Among them were movies, skating parties, dinner parties, workshops, and, of course, the annual trip to Chicago for active Seniors only. The greatest social event was the 9th Annual Commercial Club Employer - Employee Banquet at Northwestern on May 21. At this banquet three major trophies were awarded for out standing work, scholarship, and service.

The most exciting Commercial Club project was the secret planning, designing, and construction of its annual Homecoming float. Through co-operation, loyalty, and unity, this student organization produced the best all around float, winning the Sue Ferguson Memorial Trophy.

This year’s membership ranged from 65 to 70 students. The officers were: Carolyn Black, presi dent; John McIntosh, vice president; Diane Doyle Woodworth, recording secretary; Sharon Moore, cor responding secretary; Virginia Flint, treasurer; Bob Embury, parliamentarian; Rick Allen, assistant treasurer; Nancy Lanko, historian; Joan Lambeth, publicity director; Mrs. Ve ra Jeffers, associate ad viser, and Mr. Don C. Clark, adviser.

FUTURE TEACHERS

Miss Wills, adviser, and Donna Willbrandt, president, discuss club activities.

Students who were members of the Future Teach ers Association experienced a very active school year. The highlights of the club included the build ing of their Homecoming float, a baked goods sale, a car wash, various trips to Western Michigan Uni versity and Michigan State University, and the sell ing of Christmas tags. As their service projects, the members filled Christmas stockings and went carol ing. In reward for their various projects, the club treated themselves to a Christmas party and served coffee and cookies to the teachers at the close of the first semester. Finally to end the activities of the Future Teachers Association for this school year, the club awarded two fifty-dollar scholarships to outstanding seniors within the club’s membership.

Although we rarely see the Volunteens around Central, they can always be found performing services in the various hospitals throughout the city. Among their greatly appreciated duties are assisting the nurses as much as possible by admitting and dis charging patients, distributing mail, maga zines and books, and cheering the patients in general.

The requirements for becoming a Volun- teen are that the student must be at least sixteen years of age and have an expressed desire to serve. At graduation time, after ten hours of service, the Volunteens are awarded their caps, pins, and certificates. Although many of these people are bound for nursing careers, some Volunteens are interested mainly in serving the com munity.

TRI-HI-Y

“To create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and community high standards of Christian character” is the motto of all Tri-Hi-Y clubs, and the Battle Creek Central Tri-Hi-Y is no exception. By participating in various projects, such as dances and rummage sales, the girls obtained money for the World Service program of the National Y.M.C.A.

This year, the club adopted a ward of girls at the Fort Custer State Children’s Home, and has spent many wonderful and rewarding hours in giving parties and entertainment to these girls.

Last fall some of the members participated in the Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y Youth Legislature in Lan sing, and in the spring many went to the United Nations Assembly in Grand Rapids. The con cluding activities were a picnic with Hi-Y and the installation of new officers.

“CENTRAL KEY” STAFF

As in past years, our school newspaper, the CENTRAL KEY, was published every two weeks and was greatly appreciated by the majority of the student body. It provided a way in which to become informed of the school’s activities as well as entertainment.

An editorial board diligently served under the advisorship of Miss Evelyn Burke in composing the newspaper. Hundreds of articles were carefully written concerning all of the scholastic, athletic, social, and cultural achievements of Central. There were also several interesting editorials and fea tures including Bearcats on Parade in each issue.

QUILL AND SCROLL

Quill and Scroll is an honorary society for high school journalists. In order to be eligible and accepted into this society, each student must devote at least one hun dred hours of their time to writing newspaper articles for the CENTRAL KEY or helping with the production of the annual PAEAN. It was truly an eventful and memorable experience for each member as they were initiated into the society by Miss Evelyn Burke at the close of the school year.

Nanci Schmidt, Gayle Owen, and Sandy Campbell, members of the editorial board, worked many hours on the CENTRAL KEY.

“PAEAN” REPRESENTATIVES

The year book is made available to Central students by the long hours of work of many people. Miss Evelyn Burke, adviser, felt the brunt of the work, but so did Jan Uldriks, the editor-in-chief, and Marcia Graham, associate editor. Yet without the help of the advertising managers, the homeroom rep resentatives, and the several staff assistants, the PAE AN could not possibly be produced.

Maureen Kreick, Jennifer Dontje, Donna Brown, and Gail Brown Jt is difficult for those who are not in any proved invaluable in assisting the staff. . ; way associated with the PAEAN staff to lm- agine just how much time had to be devoted each day. Not only did hundreds of pictures have to be planned, scheduled, and taken, but also much copy had to be written, and rewrit ten several times. Proofreading and making layouts and dummies took many hours of con centrated effort.

The business department had to assume great responsibility in selling the pages of ad vertising which provide the necessary funds used in the making of a yearbook. The busi ness managers also spent much of their time recording payments collected from the stu dents by the homeroom representatives.

On November 29 and 30, the tal ented members of the student body, under the direction of Mr. Kenneth Peck, presented Brandon Thomas’s “Charley’s Aunt” in the W. K. Kellogg Auditorium. The audiences were highly entertained with the amusing production which proved to be an outstanding success for the Dramatic Club. The various pictures on these two pages show some of the most in teresting moments of the comedy. The wonderful performance was a great reward to all the members of the various crews who made this fall play possible.

VARSITY FOOTBALL

The 1963 Battle Creek Central football team battled its way to a 7 win-2 loss record this season. The Bearcats finished second in the 6-A Conference and were awarded seventh and eighth place state rankings on the UPI and AP polls, respectively.

This successful season cannot be credited to a f ew individuals, but to the team as a whole, and to head coach Mr. Jack Finn, and his assistants, Mr. J ison Loving, Mr. Jack Schils, and Mr. Bob Heffel finger. It was this solid, hard-fighting unit that breught about the Bearcat victories.

The squad was ably led by John Whalen, tean captain, and three other stand-outs, Jim Crosby, Ron Murphy, and Pete Clancey, who were the four players placed on the All 6-A Conference team. Tom Danna called the plays at the quarterback position, while Dick Speights was the leading pass receiver of the year.

RON MURPHY JIM PILKINGTON JIM P O N I T Z FRED PROBST TERRY TAYLOR DICK SPEIGHTS The 1963 football season was filled with many memories. For the first time in 20 years, the Bearcats won over arch rival Ann Arbor, 34-0. At Kalamazoo, sheer determination brought the team from behind to win 7-6 on John Whalen’s extra point. The 300th football victory in the history of Battle Creek Central was recorded when Jackson bowed, 32- 12. Possibly most important, a football series and a hopeful tradition was start ed when the Bearcats walloped cross town rival, Lakeview, 40-0, to bring an end to the brilliant season.

JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL

Central’s Junior Varsity football squad also had a great season, losing only one game with seven victories. This lone loss came on a muddy field at the hands of a good Kalamazoo team. The squad showed very good strength and speed, plus fine depth, a combination that makes a winning team.

The Little Bearcats were well trained by Head Coach Pierce Roberts, and his assistants, Mr. Sonny Tgiros and Mr. Paul Vogel.

CROSS COUNTRY

Strength, courage, and stamina were displayed this fall by the members of the cross country team. These boys devoted many hours of hard work to their sport, while receiving very little credit. Although the season record could have been im proved, the boys kept the fighting Bearcat spirit at all times.

Coach Kilborn Hall and Captain Stan Gillett deserve much praise for their efforts to produce a good, strong team. ROW 5—R. Masten, P. Jenney, J. Vogel, S. Root, D. Switzer, D. Hoffman, S. DeLing. ROW 4—M. Bobinic, D. Adberg, D. Frank, C. Fox, B. Ragla, F. Smith. ROW 3—O. Bishop, K. DeLano, D. Sligei, M. Tubbs, G. Gillett, J. Standback, D. Rich. ROW 2—H.Carr, D. Liss, S. Maifert, F. Perry, D. WRESTLING This year’s wrestling team was a young, aggressive squad that made very good showings despite the many injuries that beset it. The won-lost record could not pos sibly show the determination and long hours of hard practice that these grapplers put in during the season. Mike Cope captained the team under the first-year head coaching of Mr. Sonny T giros and his assistant, Mr. James Stiles. Stand-outs fo r the year included Scipio Evans, Roy Spohn, Larry Keagle, Mike Cope, Ron Mathis, and Tom Whalen. Hopes for a brilliant season next year run high, as all this year’s wrestling let- termen will be returning to the squad.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

The 1963-64 varsity basketball squad finish ed its season with a 9 win, 10 loss record. This record is not a correct indication of the talent contained in the squad, as co-captains, Jon Heffelfinger and Dick Speights and the other senior members on the team displayed a combination of both talent and determina tion.

Two impressive wins were rolled up after completion of the regular season when the Bearcats defeated Lakeview and Sturgis to capture the District title for the second con secutive year. However, Central was stopped in the Regional contest by an undefeated Al bion team.

Coach Jim Riffey will be working hard for another good season next year with his re turning lettermen, and the players up from the undefeated J. V. team.

JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL

“Undefeated” fully describes the season completed by the 1963-64 Little Bearcat basketball team. Their record was 15 wins and no losses. There were close games that provided much excitement and thrills for the crowd, and there were runaways in which the team exhibited both class and talent. Basketball fans showed up early at the fieldhouse to watch the excellent ball playing of Odis Howlett, Freddie Jones, Frank Blake, Carl English, Scott Miller, and others, all of whom will make a welcome addition to next year’s varsity squad.

Coach Jack Schils should be praised for the work he did in developing these boys into the fine ball club that they were.

This year’s swimmers, led by co-captains Dave White and Don Mcllroy, had a very fine season, finishing with six wins and three losses in dual meet competition. The splashers also placed second in the Cereal Bowl Relays, second in the 6-A meet, and fourth in the state meet.

Since the bulk of the squad was com posed of underclassmen, Coach Paul Vogel and his assistant, Mr. Brian Nagle, antici pate a fine season next year. Doug Pattullo and Duane Green, next year’s co-captains, will do their best to fulfill the expectations of their coach.

TRACK

Hurdler Dick Speights shows his championship form.

This year’s track team has an excellent chance to capture the 6-A Conference title. Dick Speights and Joe Reno captain the team with the guidance of head coach Mr. Jack Finn and his assistant, Mr. Pierce Roberts.

The team is blessed with many stand-outs, such as Arnie Williams in the 100-yd. and the 220-yd. dashes, Joe Reno in the half mile, and Dick Speights in the hurdles.

Hard work, teamed with speed and endur ance, have paid off well fo r the team, as they have won several dual meets, and placed high in both the Hastings and Albion Invitational meets. One very impressive win for the Bear cats was the 75-34 defeat over Lakeview.

This year’s team is composed mostly of returning lettermen, as only one player graduated last year. Already the team has a 7-2 record, and is improving with every game.

Strong leadership is exhibited by the two- year captain, John Whalen, and the other senior members of the team. Mr. James Rif fey, coach of the junior varsity team, is re sponsible for the development of future players.

GOLF

This year’s golf team is under the direction of Mr. James Graves, who is in his first year of coaching at Battle Creek Central. He has developed his boys into a fine group of divoters who are improving with every match o f the season. The team is young and lacks experience, but each player strives hard to reach his desired score.

Senior members of the squad include Wynn Gill, Joe Misner, and Chuck Lucas. Next year’s team will be strong with the returning lettermen who will have gained necessary experience this year. Four promising sophomores watch as Bob Evans completes his swing.

TENNIS

Tennis is an up and coming sport at Central. This year’s team, captained by Ken Nielsen and Mike Hooth, became the first Bearcat netters to win a conference match in three years. It will be a real battle for the 6-A title with Central right in there fighting all the way.

The tennis team is coached by Mr. Jerry Miller who has worked extremely hard to get his team into such excellent shape.

John Misner and Roger Janson shake hands and hope for victory. The doubles combination of Ken Nielsen, Bob Vollmar, Nick Regas, and Loran Mills talk over the high points of the last set.
