« Pour le Fashion Freak Show, nous avons créé une œuvre unique, entre photographie et peinture, mettant en scène la rencontre entre Jean Paul Gaultier et son compagnon Francis, lorsqu’ils étaient encore étudiants, en banlieue. C’est une image joyeuse qui symbolise l’amour. C’est l’un des plus grands décors que nous ayons jamais construit, en plus de quarante ans de travail en duo. L’esprit glamour des Folies Bergère, que nous avons beaucoup fréquen- tées, nous a inspirés pour rendre hommage à la couture de Jean Paul Gaultier, avec, notamment, l’omniprésence de la dentelle. Victor, le modèle, nous a rappelé le Jean Paul de l’époque de notre premier portrait de lui, en 1989, devenu iconique. C’est d’ailleurs un grand fan de son tra- vail - il se déguisait en Jean Paul quand il était petit ! Pour interpréter Francis, nous avons choisi Thor pour sa force physique, son côté solide et rassurant. Jean Paul Gaul- tier nous a glissé l’idée de l’accordéon, clin d’œil à la figure d’Yvette Horner qu’il adorait, et nous lui avons demandé de créer sur mesure les marinières pailletées. "For the Fashion Freak Show, we created a unique piece that sits between photography and painting to show Jean Paul Gaultier meeting his partner Francis, when they were both still students in the Paris suburbs. It’s a joyful image, that symbolizes love and in more than 40 years of working together it’s one of the biggest sets we have ever built. We were very inspired by the glamorous feel of the Folies Bergère – somewhere we went a lot – to pay tri- bute to Jean Paul Gaultier couture and especially the omnipre- sence of lace. Our model, Victor, reminded us of Jean Paul at the time we made our iconic first portrait of him in 1989 and he’s also a huge fan of his work – he even used to dress up as Jean Paul when he was little! We chose Thor to be Francis, for his physi-
2018 cal strength, his reassuring solidness. Jean Paul Gaultier gave us the accordion idea himself, in a nod to Yvette Horner, who he loved,
