Mission Engage. Think. Inspire. This phrase opens the dialogue at the AGM. The Gallery connects with the people of Mississauga through the collection and presentation of relevant works from a range of periods and movements in Canadian art. Express- ing multiple ideas and concepts, this visual art translates into meaningful cultural and social experiences for all audiences. The AGM employs innovative education, projects and other forms of dialogue to advance critical enquiry and commu- nity connection to the .

Artistic Vision The AGM is committed to presenting stimulating exhibitions that are aesthetically strong and intellectually challenging alongside multi-platform ancillary events. A particular interest is in projects that engage our community and reflect our 2014 awareness of contemporary and relevant cultural topics and issues. The crossing of social boundaries in terms of artistic discipline is vital. Linking elements, concepts and notions are at the core of universal artistic expression and traversing social and class lines while valuing multiple audiences is paramount to visual art experiences at the AGM.

Mandate The Gallery carries out its mandate to bring art to the community and the community to art in accordance with professional museum standards set to North American practices.

Education Philosophy The AGM’s education and engagement projects and programming aim to contemplate, represent and interact with the vibrant and layered lived experiences of the city. As the AGM presents high calibre exhibitions featuring local, national and international , it simultaneously recognizes a wide range in the public’s visual literacy and art viewing habits and is committed to facilitating equitable platforms that will allow for the full appreciation of contemporary artistic practice by all residents. . The gallery encourages and values difference and the nuances of experience in the pursuit of learning, critical thinking and engagement.

Partnership Statement The AGM rethinks the “collaboration” paradigm and explores contemporary notions of partnership. Engage. Think. Inspire. This phrase opens the dialogue at the AGM as well as informs our partnership philosophy. The AGM aims to further its vision to be “a centre for ideas and social experimentation where art is the catalyst for connecting.” Partnership entails working with individuals and other organizations in order to bring forward a result that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

The AGM works with people and organizations that reflect and actively engage with the social abricf of the city of Mississauga. The focus is on innovative ideas and critical thinking, inspired by visual art and enhanced and augmented by the particular philosophy and skill set of the partner individual or organization. 4 Outside the Gallery, AGM also partnered with Ecosource to present two sub-irrigated container gardens at C Cafe, grow- ing food while providing free container gardening workshops to the public with Ecosource in collaboration with Fiesta Ng Kalayaan and TD Mosaic Festival. On the Square, the AGM also commissioned a temporary public intervention with artist collective, TIMEANDDESIRE during Bollywood Monster Mashup.

In total, 2014 saw the presentation of 11 on-site exhibitions, and two exhibitions at Mississauga’s Central Library, featuring AGM’s Permanent Art Collection. In all of its exhibitions, the AGM remains committed to feature local 905 and GTA artists at various stages of their careers. Finally, in November, AGM’s exhibition calendar closed with two exhibitions featuring art- ists, Dipna Horra and Rehab Nazzal, working in sound, video and objects to explore identity as it is informed by place and migration. These exhibitions saw the treatment of universal themes in innovative ways and set the stage for AGM’s current curatorial theme on mapping and dislocation.

Exploring this new thematic, the AGM looks forward to continuing to situate its exhibition as a space of dialogue where art can Engage.Think.Inspire and to developing progressive programming that continues to bring art to the community and the community to art.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AGM

As valued members of our public and community, thank you for your support of the of Mississauga’s (AGM) 2014 exhibitions and programming. Our work is not possible without the diligence of our staff: former Director | , Stuart Keeler, who has now been promoted to the role of Senior Curator, Manager | Museums & Traditions at Museums of Mississauga, Assistant Curator, Kendra AInsworth, Membership Development | Animateur, Sadaf Zuberi, Communications, Shellie Zhang, Volunteer Coordinator | Curatorial Assistant, Laura Carusi, Animateur, Alexandra Hartstone, the support of our Board of Directors, our community partners, and our exceptional volunteers.

In 2014, the Art Gallery of Mississauga examined the role of the artist in its exhibitions and programming. Reflecting on the place of artists in society, exhibitions offered a broad range of perspectives. Of particular note is the presentation of major exhibition, The Sahmat Collective: Art and Activism in India since 1989 from the Smart Museum in Chicago. The exhibition was curated by Ram Rahman, a member of the Sahmat Collective and Smart Museum Curator, Jessica Moss. It was the highlight of AGM’s annual thematic and a landmark international partnership. A traveling exhibition throughout the United States, Mississauga was Sahmat Collective’s only Canadian stop!

The comprehensive exhibition simultaneously spoke to Peel Region’s large South Asian demographic and broadly to AGM’s 2014 thematic exploring the role of the artist as a change agent in society. Visitors to the Gallery found resonance in the collective’s objectives to promote freedom of speech, and new possibilities for art and artists in society. Programming highlights for Sahmat included a panel discussion on art and activism, organized by Special Project Consultant, Fareena Chanda. The discussion centered around the work of Sahmat in India and parallel examples of art and activism in the Canadian context. The event featured Director of South Asian Visual Arts Council, Indu Vashist, artist and activist collective, Carole Conde and Karl Beveridge, and Associate Professor at University of Toronto’s Department of Visual Studies, Kajri Jain.
