Oak Park Review The Official Match Day Magazine ofWalsall Wood Football Club

1 SATURDAY AUGUST 31st 1991 KICK OFF 3.00 p.m. .Price Volume F.A. CHALLENGE CUP PRELIMINARY ROUND Number 5 WALSALL WOOD v RAUNDS TOWN 40p Welcome to our third successive home game in just seven days. Today we take a break from league action as we turn our attentions to the·1991-92 F.A. Challenge.Cup competition, the most glamorous knockout cup competition in the world. For me the real F.A. Cup starts this afternoon, as clubs from all over the country prepare to do battle. Every season the F.A. Cup throws up at least one giant killer, and this season, whose to say that it couldn't be a Walsall Wood or a Raunds Town. Another aspect of the F.A. Cup is that it can pair you with new clubs and gives you the chance to meet new people involved with their respective clubs. Today, it gives us just that chance, as we welcome to Oak Park the Players, Officials and Supporters of Raunds Town who are members of the Hereward Sports United Counties League. Rau nds have won three of their first four league games so far this season, including a 6-0 thrashing last Saturday of Wellingborough Town so we should be in for an excellent contest this afternoon. Last Tuesday night we encountered Kings Heath in an Influence Combination Premier Division game. Following Saturday's impressive 4-0 home win over Northfield we were eagerly anticipating the Kings Heath game. However, I felt on the night we gave a very disappointing display, and although we dominated most of the play, we never stamped any class on the match at all. In fact it was the visitors who went ahead, in the second half, and they © looked I i kely to hang on to their lead. lt was not to be thanks mainly to Andy Roper. He won the ball, · on the right, and sent over a join the superb cross for David Thompson to power a header home for his first competitive goal of the Walsall season. The point gained took us into Wood eighth spot in the table but overall it was two points lost, against Kings Heath side, that at Daily Dip best could only be described as ordinary. Draw If there is a result from today's game then next Tuesday we travel to Highgate United for a Tel: 0902 6.00 pm kick off and then next Saturday travel to Stratford Town. Kick off for this is the usual Walsall Wood manager Gary Haynes (left) 671171 and centre-half Andy Gilbert were all smiles 2.45 pm. See you there. after seeing their new shirts. WALSALL WOOD FOOTBALL CLUB Terrace Talk OAK PARK, BROWNHILLS lt's F.A. We give them our usual warm welcome and hope they Commercial: 0902 6711 1 enjoytheirdayoutwith us. The Cup is a welcome break from the bread and butter of league football and it can of course generate tremendous interest, within the local community, if you can have a good run. Obviously that is the aim of all the clubs today and Walsall Wood are no exception. We CLUB OFFICIALS feel sure that Rau nds wi 11 provide us with a stern test if we are to make any progress in the competition. Awaiting the winners in the 1st Qualifying PRESIDENT Round is Gresley Rovers who would sure to be a very attractive visitor to e Oak Park. Let's keep our fingers crossed. If any Raunds supporter is Phil Mepham interested in Programmes, Badges, Books, Ties etc, I have a selection on ecHAIRMAN offer this afternoon. Although we haven't got a shop open yet the display John Sylvester from my 'car boot' is excellent. If any one is interested then please ask for VICE CHAIRMAN Terry. e An interesting pointerfortoday's game is thatthesetwo clubs met in the Brian Stringer F.A. Cup way back in 1945/46 in a 1st Qualifying round game at Raunds e SECRETARY Town. We even have a programme from that game because our John Rousell Groundsman, Geoff Woodward, actually played in the game. However, Geoff, can't remember the score so I have been tryingfortwoweeks to find eTREASURER out. I rang the Football Association who told me that they keep no records Val Sylvester at all of the Qualifying rounds of the F.A. Cup (and I thought these people e COMMERCIAL MANAGER are on about running a Super league). My next call was to the Association Terry Brumpton of Football Statisticians. He told me that they have about 95% of all cup results, but yes, you've guessed this particular game was in one of the remaining five per cent. I still haven't found out the score, as I'm writing these notes, but he promised to phone me back yesterday (Friday). MANAGEMENT TEAM Anyway, we have reproduced that particular programme elsewhere in today's programme. eMANAGER Raunds continued their good startto the season on Tuesday riight when they scored a 4-2 home victory over Spencer, a side of tau rse Gary Haynes who are in action today just down the road at Hednesford Town. We could ecoAcH even have programmes on sale today from that particular game. How Colin Kersley about that! ! ! . That's about all from me for today, hope everyone enjoys the game, and eTRAINER if it is a draw, then let's see you all at Raunds new ground this coming Mark Howard Tuesday night.

Sandwell Borough v Alfreton Highgate United v Chasetown Sandwell are one of the favourites this season to lift Chasetown enjoyed a tremendous season last time the Influence Combination title. The close season out finishing runners up in the West Midlands League signing of Richard Lowe means they mean business and winning both the League cup and Walsall Senior and I take them to win this game. Cup. Tip ... Sandwell Borough However they tend to struggle against the less fancied sides and with Highgate having home advantage I take them to win. Hinckley v Bridgnorth Town Tip ... Highgate Hinckley's debut in the F.A. Cup has given them a tough tie against Beazer Homes Bridgnorth. Hinckley are always a very tough side to beat but I can see Hinckley Town v Boldmere St. Michaels Bridgnorth just pipping them in a close game. The 'Mikes' have made a poor start to the season and face a difficult time at Beazer Homes League Hinckley Tip ... Bridgnorth Town. This one has to be a home win. Tip ... Hinckley Town Banbury United v Stratford Town A tough local derby in store for Stratford who have . The one remaining Influence club in the Cup today made a fair start to the season. Should be too good IS of course Walsall Wood. Because my 'tipping' is not for Banbury. all that good I refuse to predict the outcome of Tip ... Stratford Town today's game with Raunds. May the best team win.

Evesham United v Rothwell A look back at last season's A difficult one to predict. Evesham are always one of the better Combination sides but often they flatter to deceive. Rothwell meanwhile finished last seasons F.A. Cup Preliminary Round runners up in the U.C.L. and will be a tqught nut to crack. I just go for Evesham. Last seaon 159 games were played in the Tip ... Evesham United · Preliminary Round. Of these 71 were home wins, 55 away wins and 32 were draws. The game between Maesteg Park and Sharpness was a walkover for the · home side. REPLAY ... REPLAY .. The tie between Solihull Borough and Banbury United went to four games before Solihull emerged REPLAY ... REPLAY 4-3 winners while Willenhall Town needed three games before defeating Brigg Town. If today's game ends in a draw then the replay will take place at Raunds Town on TUESDAY SEPTEMBER the best home win of the round was Peacehaven's 3rd 1991 with a 7.45 pm kick off. The directions to the 8-1 success over Selsey, while Trowbridge beat ground, for anyone wanting to go, are as follows.
