The author soon found, however, that the edition was insuffi- cient to meet the demand, and he was obliged, with regret, to inform many who desired to possess the book that the issue was exhausted.     DATES OF TRIALS Until October 1775, and again from December 1816, the printed Proceedings provide both the start and the end dates of each sessions. Until the 1750s, both the Gentleman’s and (especially) the London Magazine scrupulously noted the end dates of sessions, dates of subsequent Recorder’s Reports, and days of execution. From December 1775 to October 1816, I have derived the end dates of each sessions from newspaper accounts of the trials. Trials at the Old Bailey usually began on a Wednesday. And, of course, no trials were held on Sundays. ***** NAMES & ALIASES I have silently corrected obvious misspellings in the Proceedings (as will be apparent to users who hyper-link through to the trial account at the OBPO), particularly where those misspellings are confirmed in supporting documents. I have also regularized spellings where there may be inconsistencies at different appearances points in the OBPO. In instances where I have made a more radical change in the convict’s name, I have provided a documentary reference to justify the more marked discrepancy between the name used here and that which appears in the Proceedings. ***** AGE The printed Proceedings almost invariably provide the age of each Old Bailey convict from December 1790 onwards. From 1791 onwards, the Home Office’s “Criminal Registers” for London and Middlesex (HO 26) do so as well. However, no volumes in this series exist for 1799 and 1800, and those for 1828-33 inclusive (HO 26/35-39) omit the ages of the convicts. I have not comprehensively compared the ages reported in HO 26 with those given in the Proceedings, and it is not impossible that there are discrepancies between the two.

THE LIFE OF GEORGE BORROW by Herbert Jenkins PREFACE During the whole of Borrow's manhood there was probably only one period when he was unquestionably happy in his work and content with his surroundings. He may almost be said to have concentrated into the seven years (1833-1840) that he was employed by the British and Foreign Bible Society in Russia, Portugal and Spain, a lifetime's energy and resource. From an unknown hack-writer, who hawked about unsaleable translations of Welsh and Danish bards, a travelling tinker and a vagabond Ulysses, he became a person of considerable importance. His name was acclaimed with praise and enthusiasm at page 1 / 665 Bible meetings from one end of the country to the other. He developed an astonishing aptitude for affairs, a tireless energy, and a diplomatic resourcefulness that aroused silent wonder in those who had hitherto regarded him as a failure. His illegal imprisonment in Madrid nearly brought about a diplomatic rupture between Great Britain and Spain, and later his missionary work in the Peninsula was referred to by Sir Robert Peel in the House of Commons as an instance of what could be achieved by courage and determination in the face of great difficulties. Those seven rich and productive years realised to the full the strange talents and unsuspected abilities of George Borrow's unique character.

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FUND LETTERS, 1848-1898 (bulk 1855-1856) 1 cubic foot (3 boxes) BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Hugh Auchincloss was born Dec. 28, 1878 in New York City. He was educated at Groton, was graduated from Yale in 1901, and received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S), Columbia University, in 1905. After surgical residencies at Presbyterian and Roosevelt Hospitals in New York, he began a long association with both Presbyterian Hospital and P&S, eventually becoming Chief of the Second Surgical Division of Presbyterian and Professor of Clinical Surgery at P&S. He was best known for his skill in surgery of the hand and of the breast. He died in 1947. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy to William Edward and Frances Smith Nightingale. Educated at home by her father, she later rejected the traditional role and pursuits of an upper-class Victorian lady to devote herself to nursing reform and public health advocacy. She became an iconic figure in Victorian Britain through her work nursing British troops during the Crimean War (1854-1856). Afterwards, though an invalid for most the rest of her life, Nightingale became an influential voice in government public health policy in late 19th century Britain, especially as it affected India. Nightingale died on August 13, 1910. HISTORICAL NOTE: The Florence Nightingale Fund was created as a result of the work of a group led by author Anna Maria Hall, her husband, journalist Samuel Carter Hall and statesman Sir Sidney Herbert and his wife, writer and prominent social figure Elizabeth Herbert, who in 1855 organized a public subscription to create a testament to Britain’s appreciation Florence Nightingale’s service to the nation during the Crimean War.

    The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

HOW TO Back to Churchyards listed Some Monumental Inscriptions of St Peter & St Paul Church, Noted by Richard Holworthy Published in The British Archivists Vol 1 Sept 1914 to June 1915. Kindly typed up for the website by Pat Tritton Preface. In the "Gentleman’s Magazine" for 1829, Part II, page 201, there appears a long letter, signed "Viator Antiquarius", relating to the restoration of Bromley Church. It reads: "Passing through the town of Bromley in Kent the other day, I found the old church there nearly pulled down, nothing remaining but the well-built Gothic tower and portions of the side walls. The gates of the churchyard were fortified with a palisade, so that it was impossible for an antiquary to enter and satisfy himself what might be the probable result to ancient vestiges in the Church of such desecration and destructive appearances …"/. This same "desecration" – usually called "restoration" – has been the fate of most churches, but many have suffered to a far greater extent than that of Bromley. Certainly, several interesting monuments in the church have disappeared, but the majority were replaced. One very important brass was discovered embedded in the masonry and preserved, though not placed on the wall until 1884, i.e. 55 years after its discovery. This small brass, which is dated 1361, is to the memory of Isabella, wife of Richard LACER, a wealthy merchant and mayor of London.
