Michael Hughes, one of several 30- year employees, is the creative brain behind cartoon figures, signs and paintings that truly customize customer events. Reflects As supermarkets and online ordering have captured Flowers much of the retail flower market, the number of retail r. B’s floral shops has declined. Shops like Mr. B’s, that by their M marketability and attentive customer service continue, may find that the event market sometimes overtakes the direct consumer area of their business. The success of the Hasson family is partly due to ap- plying their skills in flexing with the market in an ever- changing world. It is after all, a key to staying successful.

Yvonne Green and Sue Bryson The work of graphic designer Michael Hughes is especially valuable for event work. A member of Chambers of Commerce in Winnetka and Canoga Park, Mr. B’s has won several local business awards and supplied florals for many local events and fundraisers. It is also one of the four- teen members in the Floral Co-op, which meets regularly at the Original Los Angeles Flower Market to distribute orders to other members for delivery in their urban areas. The ups and downs of economic life in the San Fer- nando Valley where Mr. B’s Flowers resides, a few miles north of Los Angeles, have always been reflected in the lo- cal business experience and consumer shopping habits. As newer generations enter the business and purchasing world, attitudes and behaviors change.

THE BLOOMIN’ NEWS 11 SUMMER 2015 WFE’s California Dreamin’ Lands Here – in Heart of US Floral Industry By Anne Price, CalFlowers

With more than 80 percent of America’s cut flower production coming from California, host- ing one of the floral industry’s big trade shows seemed like a natural fit. The World Floral Expo (WFE), in Los Angeles March 11-13, attracted thousands of visitors from around the world. This international audience had access to a cen- tralized pavilion focused on California flowers, largely because the location was so convenient to California growers and other industry mem- bers. And, there were more varieties of flowers from California on display than from any other growing regions across the globe. The CalFlowers pavilion was the outcome of an ongoing collaboration between CalFlowers and HPP, the event organizer. CalFlowers member growers and shippers made possible the produc- tion and delivery of the many beautiful cut flowers. The pavilion was also strongly supported by the California Cut Flower Com- mission and the California State Floral Association. In the pavilion, attendees could peruse products and services from 24 leading growers and service providers including shippers. For fun, CalFlowers threw in a California flower-focused puzzle game and passport program, helping visitors find exhibits. Attendees also saw demonstrations of emerging design trends and products and could take “flower selfies” with striking bouquets from Mud Baron. “This WFE shows what strong collaboration in the industry, which has sometimes been frag- mented, can do for individual growers and ship- pers,” said Michael LoBue, CalFlowers CEO. “Because of our strength as a group and our teamwork with other California floral associa- tions and our members, attendees got a highly unique and business-friendly exhibit environ- ment in which they could do real business.” Amazing blooms and much needed services and supplies were showcased by Resendiz Brothers Protea Grower and the California Protea Asso- ciation, Kendall Farms, Mellano and Company, Dramm and Echter, Holland America Flowers, FBI Flowers/Sun Vista Farms, Florabundance, Inc., Glad-A-Way, Inc., Kitayama Brothers, Inc.,, Komet Sales; K’s Transport, San Diego County Flower & Plant Association; South- west Airlines Cargo; The Sun Valley Group; Transflora; Tutuli Flower Farms, Twins Flower Growers & Shippers; Valley Springs, and WA- FEX USA.
