Murdoch Books APRIL 2018 No!: The Power of Disagreement in a World that Wants to Get Along Charlan Nemeth

The most important book on psychology since Quiet by Susan Cain.

Description We like to get along, at home or in the workplace. We don't want to hurt people or offend. Therefore, it is no surprise that numerous famous psychological experiments have proven that we don't tend to go against authority or the majority view. Famous management gurus share the view that harmony, cohesiveness and agreement are the building blocks for effective decision-making and creativity. But they are wrong.

In No!, Charlan Nemeth, the world's leading expert on dissent, uses her 35 years of research to show why we need rebels - and how fostering more disagreement and arguments can dramatically improve decision-making and the production of good ideas. Using examples from Twelve Angry Men to brainstorming, she explains how people with minority opinions need the space to express themselves uncompromisingly, even if it causes discomfort and conflict. Explaining why the devil's advocate technique doesn't work and why authentic disagreement is necessary to open our perspectives, this book has the power to revolutionise business, creative organisations, and society.

About the Author Charlan Jeanne Nemeth is Professor of Psychology, at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2005-2009 she was Visiting Professor of Organizational Behaviour at London Business School. Professor Nemeth's work has been featured in Wired, the New Yorker, Fast Company and various other media outlets. She advises numerous important institutions on effective decision-making, including the Supreme Court of the United States.

A magisterial, essential history of the struggle between whites and Native Americans over the fate of the West.

Description Winner of the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History

Creative Publishing APRIL 2018 The Art of Making Gelato: More than 50 Flavors to Make at Home Morgan Morano

The Art of Making Gelato shows how to make ice cream's softer and silkier cousin in flavours from citrus cream to avocado!

Description Forget ice cream. Impress your dinner guests with unique flavours and indulge in fabulous recipes that you can make at home with The Art of Making Gelato. Discover the techniques and tools that you need to make this delicious treat at home.

Gelato is churned more slowly and frozen at a slightly warmer temperature than ice cream. The slow churning incorporates less air, so the gelato is denser. The higher freezing temperature means that the gelato stays silkier and softer. Dairy-free and egg-free, sorbets are made from whole fruit and a simple syrup. They're extremely flavourful and churned like ice cream to give them a soft texture.

Join Chef and Gelato aficionado Morgan Morano as she shares 50 recipes for gelato and sorbetto.

Enjoy traditional chocolate, sweet milk and strawberry, to Torta della Mimosa, Bombolone, Biscoff, and Acero - even Avocado gelato!

About the Author Morgan Morano is a professional chef and gelato expert. In 2010, Morgan established Morano Gelato after living in Italy, on-and-off, for 6 years. During college and after culinary school, Morgan gained experience working and cooking in New York City and Italy. The most significant work that she did was for a Sicilian Gelato Chef who quickly became a close friend and mentor. Morgan appreciated the bold flavours of gelato found in Italy and noticed the lack of authentic gelato shops with Italian flavours in America. Disappointed with products claiming to be 'gelato,' she set out to establish the tradition of gelato-making in America and recreate pure Italian gelato.

Frances Lincoln (Adult) APRIL 2018 Hidden Histories: A Spotter's Guide to the British Landscape Mary-Ann Ochota

'This book is perfect for anyone who's travelled through the countryside, scratched their head, and thought, 'what on earth is that thing?' - Tony Robinson

Description For the times when you're driving past a lumpy, bumpy field and you wonder what made the lumps and bumps; for when you're walking between two lines of grand trees, wondering when and why they were planted; for when you see a brown heritage sign pointing to a 'tumulus' but you don't know what to look for... Entertaining and factually rigourous, Hidden Histories will help you decipher the story of Britain's landscape through the features you can see around you.

This spotter's guide arms the amateur explorer with the crucial information needed to 'read' the landscape and spot the human activities that have shaped our green and pleasant land. Photographs and diagrams point out specific details and typical examples to help the curious spotter 'get their eye in' and understand what they're looking at, or looking for. Specially commissioned illustrations bring to life the processes that shaped the landscape (from medieval ploughing to Roman road building).

Stand-alone capsules explore interesting aspects of history (like the Highland Clearances or the coming of Christianity), and text boxes provide definitions of jargon or handy references as required (like a glossary of what different field names mean). Each chapter culminates in a checklist of key details to look for, other things it might be, and gives details of where to find some of the best examples in Britain.

About the Author Mary-Ann Ochota is a broadcaster and anthropologist who gained her MA from Emmanuel College, Cambridge University in 2002. She is a reporter on Channel 4's Unreported World documentary strand, has presented on Time Team, and also programmes on ITV (including on Britain's Secret Treasures, for which she wrote the tie-in book), BBC4, BBC3, Discovery, Animal Planet and is a regular guest on Sky News newspaper review.

Ivy Press APRIL 2018 The Art of Mindful Walking: Meditations on the Path Adam Ford

The Art of Mindful Walking uses the concept of mindfulness to explore the activity of walking as an exercise for both body and mind.

Description Mindfulness is a technique of focused awareness that has its roots in Buddhism. It makes the present moment vividly tangible, heightens the senses, and increases our ability to think clearly and make positive life choices.

The Art of Mindful Walking uses the concept of mindfulness to explore the activity of walking as an exercise for both body and mind. As an Anglican priest and former Priest-in-Ordinary to the Queen, a lecturer in Buddhism, and a devoted walker, Adam Ford is an inspiring guide with a refreshingly eclectic viewpoint. Contemplating the concept of purposeful walking, he applies the notion of mindfulness to walks ranging from a simple journey to work to a personal odyssey in the Australian outback. Exploring the idea of the walk as both medium and metaphor, and considering ideas of pilgrimage alongside the notion of the walk in literature, he draws on his personal experience of both spirituality and walking. Most of us have enjoyed moments of magic on a walk, from a simple feeling of wellbeing to a sense of awe at a special view. This book celebrates and enhances those moments: both for the hardened hiker and those who like to contemplate past walks from the comfort of their armchair.

About the Author Adam Ford (UK) is an ordained Anglican priest, now retired. He was formerly Priest-in-Ordinary to Her Majesty the Queen at the Chapel Royal, chaplain to a London School and vicar of a Yorkshire mill town. Aurum Press APRIL 2018 A Small Place Jamaica Kincaid

A brilliant look at colonialism and its effects in Antigua - by the author of Annie John.

Description If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see...

So begins Jamaica Kincaid's powerful portrait of the damaged paradise that was her childhood home. The island of Antigua is a magical place of breathtaking beauty - with cloudless skies, dazzling blue waters, and majestic sunsets. But it is also a place of dramatic contrasts. What one doesn't see while visiting this ten-by-twelve-mile island in the British West Indies is the sweeping corruption, the dilapidated schools and hospitals and homes, and the shameful legacy of its colonial past. In A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid candidly appraises where she grew up, and makes palpable the impact of European colonisation and tourism. The book is a missive to the traveller, whether American or European, who wants to escape the banality and corruption of some large place, Kincaid, eloquent and resolute, reminds us that the Antiguan people, formerly British subjects, are unable to escape the same drawbacks of their own tiny realm - that behind the benevolent Caribbean scenery are human lives, always complex and often fraught with injustice.

About the Author Jamaica Kincaid was born in St John's, Antigua. She is an award-winning writer whose books include At the Bottom of the River, Annie John, Lucy, The Autobiography of My Mother, My Brother, My Favourite Plant, and My Garden (Book). From 1976-1996 she was a staff writer for The New Yorker. She lives with her family in Vermont.

Daunt Books APRIL 2018 Among The Living And The Dead Inara Verzemnieks

A powerfully told memoir of family, separation, and the things left unsaid, in the wake of the Second World War.

Description 'It's long been assumed of the region where my grandmother was born...that at some point each year the dead will come home,' Inara Verzemnieks writes in this exquisite story of war, exile, and homecoming.

Her grandmother's stories recalled the family farm left behind in Latvia, where, during WWII, her grandmother Livija and her grandmother's sister, Ausma, were separated. They would not see each other again for more than 50 years. Raised by her grandparents in the USA, Inara grew up among expatriates, scattering smuggled Latvian sand over the coffins of the dead, singing folk songs about a land she had never visited.

When Inara discovers the scarf Livija wore when she left home, this tangible remnant of the past points the way back to the remote village where her family broke apart. Coming to know Ausma and the trauma of her exile to Siberia under Stalin, and her grandfather's own complex history, Inara pieces together Livija's survival through the years as a refugee. Weaving these two parts of the family story together in spellbinding, lyrical prose, she gives us a profound and cathartic account of loss, survival, resilience, and love.

About the Author Inara Verzemnieks teaches creative nonfiction at the University of Iowa. She has won a Pushcart Prize and a Rona Jaffe Writer's Award, and has been a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in feature writing. She lives in Iowa City, Iowa.

Dazzling, hallucinatory stories by Sara Gallardo, a rediscovered Argentinian contemporary of Garcia Marquez.

Description An old man lives alone. His garden is the envy of all his neighbours. But one morning he wakes up to find that his garden is floating away, with him on board, and his supplies won't last. As the water runs out and the delirium takes over, the desperation of solitude begins to overwhelm him.

Pushkin APRIL 2018 The Beggar And Other Stories Gaito Gazdanov

Translated for the first time, the best short stories by the 'modernist master' Gazdanov, author of The Spectre of Alexander Wolf

Description In a Metro underpass, bald and dressed in rags, stands a silent beggar. In the evening, he walks the deserted streets of Paris; at night, he sleeps in a small, foetid crate vacated by the death of another beggar. He is poor and he is ill, but, on reflection, he is free.

Never published before in English, this marvellously translated collection of tightly written, lyrical works represent marvellously compact miniatures of all the major strands that Gazdanov explores in his novels. The senselessness of life, the nature of fate, and the richness of the inner life - these brilliant and moving stories have it all.

About the Author Gaito Gazdanov (1903-1971) joined the White Army aged just sixteen and fought in the Russian Civil War. Exiled in Paris from the 1920s onwards, he eventually became a nocturnal taxi-driver and quickly gained prominence on the literary scene as a novelist, essayist, critic and short-story writer, and was greatly admired by Maxim Gorky, among others. Pushkin Press also publishes the celebrated The Spectre of Alexander Wolf, The Buddha's Return and The Flight.

Pushkin APRIL 2018 The End Of The Moment We Had Toshiki Okada

Two brilliant, multi-layered stories from the winner of the Kenzaburo Oe Prize: part of Pushkin's Japanese novella series, showcasing the best contemporary Japanese writing

Description On the eve of the Iraq War, a man and a woman meet in a nightclub in Tokyo. They go to a love hotel, and spend the next five days in a torrid affair. Written in a stream of consciousness, with the reader's perceptions shifting and melting into one another, what is remarkable in this story is not what happens, but the ability of the writer to enter the minds and memories of the protagonists.

In the second story, a woman living in a damp flat obsesses on the filthy state of her dwelling. She remains in bed for the duration of the narrative, but the drama and tension of her inner life - spiralling further and further into her memories and anxieties - keep the reader engrossed to the very end.

The End of the Moment We Had demonstrates the fluidity and richness of this extraordinarily gifted writer's language and ideas.

About the Author Toshiki Okada is a hugely admired playwright, director and novelist. Born in Yokohama in 1973, he formed the theatre company 'chelfitsch' in 1997. Since then he has written and directed all of the company's productions, practising a distinctive methodology for creating plays, and has come to be known for his use of hyper-colloquial Japanese and unique choreography. His play Five Days in March, on which the first story in The End of the Moment We Had is based, won the prestigious Kishida Drama Award. His works have been translated into many languages around the world.

Creative Publishing APRIL 2018 The Housekeeper's Tale: The Women Who Really Ran the English Country House Tessa Boase

The story of The Housekeeper's Tale follows the lives of five women to delve into the secret existence of these powerful yet invisible women who ran our great English country houses; from the 19th- to the mid 20th-century this was the most important professional job an uneducated woman could aspire to; the female equivalent of the butler.

Description As a working class woman in the 19th century, you could do no better. The housekeeper of a great English country house might manage a hundred servants, and a domestic budget on par with a small bank. She had no need of a home of her own - or, for that matter, a husband. But for all her importance, she has been invisible to history. This unique history tracks the housekeeper's fortunes during a period of relentless social change. She enters the book haughtily, in black bombazine and whalebone stays; she exits a lone figure in a nylon housecoat, down on arthritic knees with a scrubbing brush. None of these women, mulling over the day in their parlours, would have imagined their stories worth telling - but The Housekeeper's Tale proves otherwise. In five gripping accounts, Tessa Boase brings to life the heroic women who ran Britain's country houses.

About the Author TESSA BOASE read English at Lincoln College, Oxford, then worked as a voiceover artist, a children's scriptwriter, and as a commissioning editor of The DailyandSunday Telegraph andThe Daily Mail. She was co-founder of the Salon des Amis (a London salon of ideas, debate and entertainment), and more recently restored a ruin in Italy's Sabine Hills where she produces olive oil.

Atlantic APRIL 2018 Hired: Six Months Undercover in Low-Wage Britain James Bloodworth

A compelling and ground-breaking piece of narrative journalism that gets right to the heart of divided Britain and its dysfunctional jobs climate.

Description We all define ourselves by our profession - at least to some extent. But what if our job was demeaning, poorly paid, and tedious? Cracking open Britain's divisions - immigrant/British, North/South, urban/rural, working class/middle class, leave/remain - journalist James Bloodworth spends six months living and working across Britain, taking on the country's worst jobs. He lives on the meagre proceeds and discovers the anxieties and hopes of those he encounters, including working-class British, young students striving to make ends meet, and Eastern European immigrants.

Reminiscent of Orwell's Road to Wigan Pier, this is a fascinating window onto a world that Britain's London-centric media rarely visits. From the Staffordshire Amazon warehouse to the taxi-cabs of Uber, Bloodworth uncovers horrifying employment practices and shows how traditional working-class communities have been decimated by the move to soulless service jobs with no security, advancement or satisfaction. The new novel from Patrick Hoffman, author of the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger-shortlisted The White Van.

Description Patrick Hoffman burst onto the crime fiction scene with The White Van, a captivating thriller set in the back streets of San Francisco, which was named a Wall Street Journal best mystery of the year and was shortlisted for the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award.
