Brighton & Hove Bus Company services

Routes 12/12A/12X Eastbourne – East Dean – Seaford Chyngton Estate (12A) – Seaford – Denton Corner – Newhaven – Peacehaven – Telscombe Cliffs - Saltdean – Rottingdean - Brighton

Changes will be made to the weekend timetables of these Brighton & Hove Bus Company commercial services from 15 September 2013. There is no change to the Monday – Friday service.

There are a number of changes and improvements to the early morning service in both directions on Saturdays. Amongst these is a far earlier first bus into Eastbourne (arriving at the Arndale Centre at 0618 compared to the current first bus at 0733).

On Saturday evenings, the 1831 service 12 journey from Eastbourne Pier to Newhaven is extended through to Brighton Station.

On Sunday evenings, there are some improvements to the westbound service with the 1855 service 12 journey from Brighton, Churchill Square, extended beyond Newhaven to Seaford town centre and the 1908 service 12 journey from Brighton Station becoming a 12A and being extended beyond Seaford town centre to Chyngton Estate. There will also be an additional 12A journey at 2000 from Chyngton Estate to Seaford town centre.

Brighton & Hove point out that these changes all result from suggestions by customers.

Route 13X Eastbourne – Beachy Head – Birling Gap - East Dean – Seaford – Newhaven – Peacehaven – Telscombe Cliffs- Saltdean – Rottingdean - Brighton

From 15 September 2013, this Brighton & Hove Bus Company commercial service will revert to operation on Sundays and public holidays only for the winter period.

There will be no changes to the timetable except that journeys to Eastbourne Pier will be allowed more time to complete their journey between the Arndale Centre and Pier.

Routes 14/14A/14B/14C Newhaven – Peacehaven- North Peacehaven – Telscombe Cliffs - Saltdean – Rottingdean - Brighton Marina (14B) – Royal County Hospital (14B/14C) – Brighton - Hangleton

Changes will be made to this Brighton & Hove Bus Company commercial service from 15 September 2013, with most change focussed on Saturday afternoons/evenings and during the day on Sundays.

Mondays to Fridays: The service 14 journey at 1913 from Brighton Station to Peacehaven will start from Hangleton rather than the 1931 journey from the Station.

Saturdays: There is some reduction in frequency of departures from Brighton, Churchill Square, to Peacehaven between 1600 and 1730. One journey is lost and various others are retimed.

The current 1910 departure from Hangleton will leave at 1852 and the 1936 journey will be withdrawn. This has some effect on the journeys between Brighton Station and Peacehaven in that the 1931 (14) and 1957 (14C) journeys from Brighton Station will no longer start from Hangleton whilst the 1913 (14) will. This also means that the last journey from Hangleton to points along the coast will be around ¾ hour earlier than at present. Additionally, the 1817 (service 14C) journey from Peacehaven, Meridian Centre, will terminate at Brighton Station rather than continue to Hangleton. This means that the last direct journey back from the East Sussex coast to Hangleton will run half an hour earlier than at present. Brighton & Hove cites low passenger numbers on the Hangleton section as the reason for these withdrawals.

Sundays: Daytime service 14B is withdrawn with journeys replaced by service 14. Eastbound journeys will leave Brighton Station at the same time as the current 14B journeys and westbound ones will leave Peacehaven Meridian Centre at the same times. Due to buses running via the more direct 14 route, points on the second half of each journey will be served somewhat earlier than at present.

Early morning 14C journeys from Peacehaven to Brighton Station are unchanged as are the evening 14/14A journeys.

Brighton & Hove states that the replacement of the 14B with the 14 is the result of comments made by customers to drivers about preferring a shorter journey and not diverting via Brighton Marina and the Royal Sussex County Hospital. The 14C journeys are retained as they fit with shift patterns for workers at the RSCH.

Routes 28/29/29B/29X Tunbridge Wells – Eridge – – Herons Ghyll – Five Ash Down – /Rose Hill – Halland (28) - Ringmer (28/29B) – Lewes – Brighton

There are no changes to the timetable for these Brighton & Hove Bus Company commercial services. However, from 15 September 2013, service 28 journeys will additionally observe the ‘Brighton Academy’ stop, necessitating a slight diversion when heading into Brighton. As well as the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy, in due course this will be convenient for visitors to ‘The Keep’, the new historical resource centre holding the archives of East Sussex County Council, Brighton & Hove City Council and also certain collections of the University of Sussex.

Route 79 Ditchling Beacon - Brighton (weekends)

Changes will be made to this Brighton & Hove Bus Company service from 5 October 2013. The service is managed by Brighton & Hove City Council using contributions from the Council, The National Trust and the South Downs National Park Authority.

As is normal for the winter period, the last journey of the day in each direction is withdrawn. These are the 1715 from Brighton, Old Steine and 1745 from Ditchling Beacon. The new last journeys will therefore be an hour before this.

It has also always been the practice to withdraw the route on Saturdays during the winter period. However, Brighton & Hove City Council will use funding from the South Downs National Park Authority to continue the Saturday service in addition to the service on Sundays and public holidays.

Route 31 Uckfield – – Piltdown – Newick – North Chailey – Scaynes Hill – Northlands Wood – Haywards Heath – Bolnore.

This service will be operated on a wholly commercial basis from 2 September 2013.

The service will omit the Laburnham Way/Beech Hill loop in the Northlands Wood area of Haywards Heath and operate direct via Northlands Avenue.

Journeys will operate at very similar times to now. There are some intermediate timing changes on the section between North Chailey and Uckfield with timings varying between 2 minutes earlier and 4 minutes later than at present.

More specific changes are as follows:  with the exception of the Warden Park school journeys, only one journey (the 0727 from Cuckfield) will serve Cuckfield.  the first journey into Uckfield, which currently runs through from Cuckfield and Haywards Heath, will be revised to start from North Chailey at 0705 but will operate on Saturdays as well as Mondays to Fridays. The arrival time at Uckfield Bus Station is unchanged (0725) so this journey continues to provide a connection to service 54 to Eastbourne which departs 0733.

Route 33 Brighton – Hurstpierpoint – Hassocks – Ditchling (Saturdays) - Burgess Hill – Haywards Heath.

In the interests of improving reliability there will be adjustments to this service which operates with some support from West Sussex County Council. These take effect from 2 September 2013 and involve changes to timings of up to ten minutes and the withdrawal of the section of route between Brighton Old Steine and Churchill Square.

The only journeys that serve East Sussex are those on Saturdays which divert from the standard route to serve Ditchling. The bus which currently commences from Hurstpierpoint at 0953 will leave there three minutes earlier, serving Ditchling at 0959 rather than 1001. The return journey departs Haywards Heath, Sainsburys, at an unchanged time of 1148, passing through Ditchling at 1230. The final Ditchling journey (which currently leaves Brighton at 1620) is diverted via the standard 33 route and will no longer serve the village.

Route 40 Brighton – Hassocks – Burgess Hill – Wivelsfield Haywards Heath – Cuckfield and Bolnore

There are some changes to this service with effect from 2 September 2013. The route will no longer serve Bolnore but operate direct between Haywards Heath and Cuckfield in both directions. Revised services 31 and 39 will continue to serve Bolnore.

Most of the route operates outside East Sussex with Wivelsfield being the main East Sussex community directly benefitting from this service. Timings are revised with the journey time from Wivelsfield to Burgess Hill increasing in particular. Timings at Wivelsfield are very little altered with southbound journeys running one minute later and most northbound journeys operating between two and six minutes later. There is one more significant change in that the 0757 Mondays – Fridays journey to Haywards Heath is revised to run at 0810.
