That’s exactly what the City of Buena Park has been doing for 60 wonderful years, thanks to the support and contributions of our dedicated and caring community members. MayorM Beth Swift offered a sparkling cider toast in honor of Buena Park’s anniversary at the January 22, 2013 city council meeting, celebrating its climb to success. The Buena Park Police Department also turned 60, marking its long-term commitment to public service. In honor of the City’s 60th anniversary, let’s take a quick glimpse into Buena Park’s history:  In 1885, James A. Whitaker, a wholesale grocer from Chicago, bought 690 acres of the Stearns Rancho, part of what was once the sprawling Rancho Los Coyotes, and fi led township papers in 1887 in Los Angeles County - Orange County had not been formed - to create the town of Buena Park.  In the late 1800s, Buena Park fi rst became known as a dairy center and both the Sante Fe and Southern Pacifi c railroads built depots.  In 1920, Walter and Cordelia Knott gained the reputation for growing the tastiest berries in Orange County. Cordelia began selling berry jams, home-baked pies, hot biscuits and fried chicken.  In 1952, Walter developed Ghost Town, eventually the fi rst of Knott’s Berry Farm’s six themed areas, to give customers who were waiting for food something to do, and because of his love of the Old West.  On January 27, 1953 THE FIRST CITY COUNCIL IS SWORN IN! Orange County clerk B.J. Smith swore in the fi rst city council of the new City of Buena Park, which was voted in as a general law rather than a charter city. Grady Travis, Calvin Culp, Garner McComber, Tom Steizner and Joe Webber made up the fi rst city council. The new city council elected Grady Travis as the fi rst mayor of the City of Buena Park. MoreMMore information on Buena Park’s 60thh Anniversary activities throughout 20133 will be announced on www.facebook.com/CityofBuenaParkark and in upcoming editions of Buena Park Today. 7 BPCityNewsBuenaPark BuenaPark W4C - Watch4Cars! A safety campaign to reduce and prevent accidents

Anytime a pedestrian or bicyclist is struck by a moving vehicle, the pedes- trian or bicyclist is likely to be severely injured, or worse. Unfortunately, the youth of our City (those not yet of driv- ing age) are most often the victims. To help prevent these types of accidents, the Buena Park Police Department is spreading the word about “W4C”, a safety program reminding pedestrians and bicyclists to “Watch4Cars!” The Buena Park Police Department responds to about 60 vehicle-versus- pedestrian and vehicle-versus-bicycle 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 accidents per year – an average of Pedestrian -Related Accidents 26 28 30 34 27 about fi ve a month or a little over one each week! KEEP SHARPS OUT OF THE TRASH State law (Section 118286 of the California Health and Safety Code) makes it illegal to dispose of sharps waste in the trash or recycling containers, and requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container. Home-generated sharps include hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications, and are de- rived from a household including a multifamily residence or household. In addition to prohibiting the disposal of sharps waste in the trash, the Medical Waste Management Act requires home-generated sharps to be placed in approved containers for transport and disposal. Home-generated sharps should not be disposed of in bleach bottles, soda containers, or detergent containers. Instead, users should store the sharps waste in red bio-hazardous containers for easy identifi cation. Bio-hazard containers are available for purchase by consumers. Additionally, some jurisdictions have containers available at no cost. Information can be found on the Los Angeles County DPW website at http://ladpw.org/epd/hhw/sharps/. To properly dispose of home-generated sharps, drop them off in a bio-hazard container for FREE disposal at Park Waste & Recycling located at 6762 Stanton Ave. in Buena Park (during operating hours only). RECYCLE YOUR HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES Did you know that Americans purchase nearly $3 billion dry-cell batteries every year to power radios, toys, cellular phones, watches, laptop comput- ers and portable power tools? Dry-cell batteries include alkaline and carbon zinc (9-volt, D, C, AA, AAA), mercuric-oxide (button, some cylindrical and rectangular), silver-oxide and zinc-air (button), and lithium (9-volt, C, AA, coin, button). Batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel, which can contaminate the environment when disposed of improperly. When incinerated, certain metals might be released into the air, or can concentrate in the ash produced by the combustion process. Recycling batteries keeps heavy metals out of landfi lls and the air. Recycling also saves resources because recovered plastic and metals can be used to make new batteries. Please conveniently recycle your household batteries (AAA, AA, C, D, and 9V only) for FREE at Park Waste & Recycling located at 6762 Stanton Avenue in Buena Park (during operating hours only). March is National Nutrition Month! Apply to WIC and Celebrate the month with us! Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day for National Nutrition Month® “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day” is the 2013 National Nutrition Month® (NNM) key message. Americans are encouraged to follow healthy eating styles using the 2010 Dietary Guidelines and MyPlate messages. This message also recognizes that food preferences, lifestyle, culture, ethnic traditions, and health concerns all impact an individual’s food choices. There is a local program here in Buena Park to help you “eat right, your way”, so you can raise a healthy family. WIC, the Women, Infants, and Children program is a nutrition program that helps pregnant women, new moms, infants and young children up to 5 years old to eat well, be active, and stay healthy. Migrants families are also welcome to apply. WIC offers families: You can participate in WIC if you:  Individualized, In-Class and On-line nutrition education  Are pregnant  Education and support for breastfeeding moms  Are breastfeeding a baby under 1 year of age  Checks to buy healthy foods  Just had a baby in the past 6 months  Help in fi nding health care and other community services  Have children under 5 years of age  Have a family income within WIC guidelines Where is the WIC Program in Buena Park? The Buena Park WIC Clinic is located at 6301 Beach Boulevard, Suite 103, across from the Honda dealership. You may walk-in or call 1 (888) YOUR WIC or 1 (888) 968-7942 for an appointment. Come celebrate National Nutrition Month® with us. This annual national campaign comes to you from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, formerly known as the American Dietetic Association and County of Orange Health Care Agency WIC program. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
