This leads to a substandard realization of the music. Contrarily, a musician should integrate research with the learning process as to enhance the comprehensive understanding of the piece, which ultimately results in a high level of performance. This idea is important for the complex and extensive musical repertoire of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. -

Feature image by Mike Penello. In the early 20th century, segregation was a fact of life for African Americans in the South. It became a matter of law in 1926. In 1919, a group of African Americans from Norfolk and Portsmouth met to develop a cultural/business center in Norfolk where the black community “could be treated with dignity and respect.” The “Twin Cities Amusement Corporation” envisioned something like a modern-day town center. The businessmen obtained funding from black owned financial institutions in Hampton Roads. Twin Cities designed and built a movie theater/ retail/ office complex at the corner of Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard in Norfolk. Photo courtesy of the family of Harvey Johnson The businessmen chose 25-year-old architect Harvey Johnson to design a 600-seat “state of the art” theater with balconies and an orchestra pit. The Attucks Theatre is the only surviving theater in the United States that was designed, financed and built by African Americans. The Attucks was named after Crispus Attucks, a stevedore of African and Native American descent. He was the first patriot killed in the Revolutionary War at the Boston Massacre of 1770. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit interpretiert das Werk ‚A Survivor from Warsaw‘ von Arnold Schönberg auf der Grundlage der von dem Historiker Konrad H. Jarausch beschriebenen Holocaust-Erinnerungskategorien „Survival Stories“, „Figures of Remembrance“ und „Public Memory Culture“. Eine Analyse des Librettos zeigt, dass dieses Werk einzelne „Survival Stories“ künstlerisch zu einer „Figure of Remembrance“ transformiert und beleuchtet die musikalische und kulturelle Aussage dieser trilingualen Textvertonung im Hinblick auf den Ausdruck von kultureller Identität. In meiner Betrachtung des Beitrages dieses Werkes zu einer „Public Memory Culture“ steht vor allem die Kulturpolitik der Siegermächte in beiden Teilen Deutschlands im Mittelpunkt, welche Aufführungen dieses Werkes im Rahmen von Umerziehungsmaßnahmen initiierten und somit ihre eigenen ideologischen Konzepte im öffentlichen Bewusstsein zu stärken versuchten. Dabei werden bislang unberücksichtigte Quellen herangezogen. Eine Betrachtung der Rezeption von ‚A Survivor from Warsaw’ im 20. und 21. A thorough quantitative and qualitative analysis of 46 recordings from 41 pianists (recorded between 1925 to 2018), including six recordings from Eduard Steuermann, the leading pianist of the Second Viennese School, scrutinizes the interdependency between macro- and microformal pianistic approaches to this cycle. In thus tracing varying conceptions of a performance-shaped cyclic form and their historical contexts, the continuous unfurling of the potential of Schoenberg’s musical ideas in both “structuralist” and “rhetorical” performance styles is systematically explored, offering a fresh approach to the controversial discussion on how analysis and performance might relate to one another. Biography and Works Wyner Yehudi G. Schirmer and Associated Music Publishers Awarded the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for his Piano 1991. From 1991-2005, he held the Walter W. Naumburg Concerto, “Chiavi in mano,” Yehudi Wyner (b.1929) is Chair of Composition at Brandeis University, where he Biography one of America's most distinguished musicians. His is now Professor Emeritus. compositions include over 80 works for orchestra, Wyner Yehudi chamber ensemble, solo voice and solo instruments, Born in Western Canada, Yehudi Wyner grew up in piano, chorus, and music for the theater, as well as New York City.
