Mayte Martin: Dosas de Dos SATKCD 171 / 8429085441409 / label: Satelite K / format: CD / Spain – Popular Spanish singer Mayte Martin, famous for her flamenco albums, now astonishes with this album devoted to boleros. She has done this before on “Free Boleros” and now takes yet another step forward in her interpretation. The songs are recorded live at the concert hall Luz de Gas in Barcelona. She chose her favorite boleros such as ‘Espérame en el cielo’, ‘Piensa en mí’, ‘Yo lo comprendo’, ‘Regálame esta noche’ and ‘En un rincón del alma’. He is backed by a great deal of very talented musicians such as Cenk Erdogan and Ediz Hafizoglu. In the booklet in Czech and English, there is a brief description of the process of courtship and wedding including basic habits, remarks on the origin and music history of selected songs and several medallions, musical ensembles, musicians and singing personalitie. This selection offers listeners instrumental, solo and chorus sung “verbuňks“ and recruiting (“rekrutské/regrútské/legrútské”) songs. This is the seventh part of the reflection on the contemporary form of folk music-making both in small and large Moravian folk regions. Listen.

With the pianist Maria Kieslowski he forms a duo that relies on the intimacy and rawness of the basic acoustic guitar sound, piano and contrast of two tonally distinctive voices. The album Mezi Lopatky is a fragile, intimate confession about loves that we hold deep inside. Bac Nin: Vietnam – Chant Quan Ho SA 141277 / 3700089412776 / label: Air Mail Music / format: CD / Vietnam – Traditional Quan Ho singing is a Vietnamese folk music style that originated in what is now Bac Ninh Province. Common at rituals, festivals, competitions and informal gatherings, it is performed as alternating verses by pairs of young female and male singers. This a culture that has been very well preserved.

Chimurenga Renaissance is a Seattle-based duo made up of Tendai Maraire and Hussein Kalonji (in Shona “Chimurenga” means revolutionary struggle). Tendai is one-half of the visionary hip-hop group Shabazz Palaces and has family roots in Zimbabwe while guitarist Hussein’s family hails from the Congo. The 11-track EP “Girlz With Gunz” will be their debut release with Glitterbeat Records and will be followed by a full-length album in autumn of 2016. Listen to the teaser.

Recorded with Soutak producer Chris Eckman (Bassekou Kouyate, Tamikrest), Abbar el Hamada, is a wholly persuasive example of Brahim’s pan-musical vision and is her most compelling and varied album to date.
