EXHIBITIONS

SFMOMA PRESENTED A RICH AND DIVERSE RANGE OF EXHIBITIONS IN FISCAL 2012. The year saw retrospectives of major artists and designers including Mark Bradford, Rineke Dijkstra, Dieter Rams, Richard Serra, and Francesca Woodman. Intriguing thematic exhibitions examined subjects as diverse as photography in Mexico and Buckminster Fuller’s Bay Area legacy. Other presentations looked back at fifty years of SECA Award–winning Bay Area art and forward with new works by Jim Campbell and others. As always, rotating exhibitions from the SFMOMA collection told compelling stories about the history of art from the early twentieth century to today.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

AN ARRAY OF CREATIVE AND ENGAGING PUBLIC PROGRAMS ENLIVENED SFMOMA IN FISCAL 2012. Live Art performances and the Pop-Up Poets series made the museum resonate with music and the spoken word, and a unique collaboration brought a Gertrude Stein opera to the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Distinguished artists shared personal insights on their work, while lectures and symposia sparked in-depth discussions of essential questions in art and culture. One on One curator talks provided intimate encounters with works on view, film screenings presented diverse visions, and Free Tuesday programs made art accessible to all.

EDUCATION

AT SFMOMA WE BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF ART TO CHANGE LIVES, and our educational programs are a funda- mental part of our effort to open up the world of modern and contemporary art for visitors of all ages. In 2012 we connected with K–12 schoolchildren through docent programs both at the museum and in schools. We expanded our family program offerings to better welcome and serve that core audience. We contributed to the visual education of hundreds of teachers and docents. And we continued to create interpretive resources to make art more accessible and inspiring both inside and outside the museum’s walls.

THE PROGRAMS CHRONICLED IN THIS REPORT WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE HARD WORK OF OUR DEDICATED STAFF. This group of talented professionals is exemplary in its commitment to SFMOMA and in its pas- sion for modern and contemporary art. This dedication extends well beyond our walls: many SFMOMA staff members are also practicing artists, and others teach, present at conferences, volunteer at arts organizations, or otherwise actively participate in local, national, and global cultural communities.
