November/December 2020 ADAS YESHURUN SYNAGOGUE Cheshvan/Kislev/Tevet 5781 THE MENORAH The Rabbi’s Voice A Message From Our President

The responses into six seasons, instead of four. The Talmud teaches us that they are the to the services were overwhelmingly positive. We did have a few (zera) planting season, the (choref) winter season, the (kar) cold season, glitches; some had connectivity issues and our sound system was the (katzir) harvest season, the (kayitz) summer season and the (cham) tweaked as best we could. But without the luxury (and expenses!!) hot season. of an outside production company, I feel we did as good, or better, as some other synagogues. We have heard that other service This means that even though, on the secular calendar, winter doesn’t platforms failed due to being overloaded during the “online” times offcially start this year (in the Northern Hemisphere) until December that were essentially the same for many High Holy Day observances. 21st, “Jewish winter” actually begins much earlier, in the middle of the I sensed that all those who did attend felt safe in doing so. In fact, Hebrew month of Kislev (roughly December 1st). there were many who opted out of attending in person early on but Our sages point out that the only holidays the Jewish people celebrate started attending as word of mouth spread of how well we kept the in the cold winter months are Chanukah and . On Purim, our enemies tried to destroy the Jewish people through Now, and after we can finally take a deep breath, the AYS Board is mass genocide. again looking forward . . . this time towards opening up additional attended-plus-virtually-aired services. As I write this message in Therefore, winter, in Jewish thought, is a metaphor for the long and early October, the initial steps in the planning process have already dark exile to which the Jewish people have been subjected for centuries begun. Unfortunately, and due to an abundance of caution based on and millennia. Just as in winter, all planting and physical growth ceases current COVID-19 activity, we are still not open for services as usual. while the earth lies dormant. I hope that by the time you receive the Menorah, some sequence of The bright side to this is that the two winter holidays of Chanukah and attended/virtual services may be ready to be announced. Regardless of the eventual schedule that may be developed, the safety and Purim thus stand as an everlasting reminder to the Jewish people that security of our attending congregants will remain our paramount even in our darkest moments, when we are threatened either spiritually goals. At that time and for those who may still not be quite ready or physically, we will ultimately prevail. In our own times, we are yet again faced with physical and spiritual And in keeping with an AYS tradition, I’d like to “Tip threats to our existence as a people. From our enemies around the world My ” to the entire AYS Board, Rabbi Sirull, to the anti-semitic factions here in the US, and even the Coronavirus. Jenna McRae, and Corey Flagge . . . the ones most responsible for the successful delivery of the High Winter may seem bleak and dreary, yet we dare not despair. Because in Holy Day services. Each played a significant role (or just a few weeks, we begin celebrating Chanukah, the frst of our two roles!!) in the assembly of new and original programing elements, winter holidays. And Chanukah reminds us that we have within our details and tasks necessary to pull off such a well-received services power to emerge victorious both physically and spiritually. package!!! Let us hope and pray that we will soon see the end of these diffcult times, when we will fnally be able to say: “For, behold, the winter is Finally, I’d like to again repeat my closing comment from the last past, the rain is over and gone. The blossoms have appeared in the land; Menorah . . . . the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtledove is heard in Until we meet FACE-TO-FACE again !!!! the land.” ( 2:11-12). 8 Religious School:

WEEKDAY RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Weekday Religious School classes have been in session for almost two months. The 3rd graders are learning Hebrew letters and words, learning to use the , studying , rituals and traditions, as well as Pirkei Avot. The 4th grade – Bar Mitzvah students are concentrating on specific songs and prayers, as well as holidays, Israel and Pirkei Avot. The 4th, 6th and Bar Mitzvah classes have met on Wednesday when Monday has been a legal or Jewish holiday. All of the students participated in making Sukkah decorations (see photos); however, a planned afternoon for Sukkah decorating was derailed by windy-rainy weather. On Monday, October 4th prior to eating their snacks, the students participated in shaking the lulav and etrog as well as reciting the appropriate blessings. (see photos) This year we have been using two APPS, Prayer Tech and Online Primer with the students; both reinforce classroom learning and can be used at home. In addition to attending Religious School, students are encouraged to attend Services virtually, for now and hopefully face to face one Saturday soon.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION Junior Congregation will resume on a weekly basis* when congregants may once again attend face to face Saturday morning Shabbat services at the synagogue. All children who have not yet had their B’nai Mitzvot may attend Junior Congregation which begins with the Torah service and reading of the Torah (approximately 10:15 a.m.) and ends when Musaf begins (approximately 11:20). Children enrolled in Weekday Religious School are encouraged to attend a minimum of twice monthly. Children 4 and under must be accompanied by a parent. The children in attendance are invited to take out and return “their stuffed ” during the Torah services. Please arrive by 10:00 to take out the Torahs. The Religious School students conclude services with Ein Keloheinu and Aleinu and are joined by the younger children for Adon Olam and HaMotzi. *Junior Congregation will not be held on Special or when there is a guest speaker. Babysitting for those children under age 9, will be available on these dates on an as needed basis. Please advise Jenna no later than the Wednesday prior to these dates if you will need babysitting so that sitters can be arranged. Shabbat & High Holiday Babysitting Weekly Shabbat babysitting for infants through 2nd grade will continue to be offered on an as needed basis. Because Junior Congregation is now structured to include younger children, there is no need for a babysitter from 10:00-11:00 and shortly after the children return to services for Musaf, they are invited onto the Bimah to close services. Should you require babysitting, please contact Jenna by Wednesday of the week you will need it.

AWAY FROm AYS FOR SHAbbAt A Shabbat/Holiday attendance chart will be maintained again this year and will be displayed in the Education Wing hallway. Children who attend Saturday morning services at a synagogue other than AYS will receive “credit” for Shabbat attendance. Please notify Susan Steinberg the following Monday or Tuesday and of course, this will not begin until we renew “in person” Saturday morning Shabbat services. Holiday service attendance will also be noted.

Sunday School Our joint Sunday School with Chabad began on Sunday, September 13th and after a four week hiatus due to a month of Jewish holidays, it resumed on Sunday, October 18th. AYS has 9 students enrolled, the majority in person with CDC precautions in place and others virtually on ZOOM. They continue their Hebrew studies, davening and most recently learning about making a Jewish Home in this pandemic. (See photos.)

Kiddush and Shalosh Seudos Sponsorship – Suspended During the Covid-19 Pandemic our regular ($36.00) and Shalosh Seudos ($18.00) have been replaced by Shabbat Yahrzeit Sponsorships ($18.00). Thank you to everyone who has participated. Jenna continues to be in charge of securing our weekly sponsors until such a time a volunteer is found. Should you desire to be a Shabbat Yahrzeit sponsor, please contact Jenna at the synagogue office 706-733-9491 or adasyeshurun@gmail. com. Sponsorships of $18.00 are also being accepted for celebratory events (birthday, anniversary, graduation, award. Please contact Susan Steinberg at 706-364-6086 or [email protected]. Once we are able to return to AYS for services, it will be January before WAYS considers resuming Kiddush/ Shalosh preparation and the serving of food. When we resume Kiddush and Shalosh Seudos, we will return to our regular sponsorships.

14 AYS NewS CApSuleS Menorah Publication Dates & Deadlines You are now reading the third edition of The Menorah for fiscal year 2020-21. The next edition will be the January – February Edition. The deadline for submissions for the January-February issue will be Wednesday, 12/5/20. Please advise Susan Steinberg if you have something you want included. Publication dates for future issues as well as items typically included in them are listed below with their submission deadlines.

PUBLICATIONS SUBMISSION DEADLINES March-April Tues. 2/11/21 Corned Beef edition May-June Thurs. 4/3/21 Dues Structure for Next 5 Years Menorah Marketing-Sponsors Annual Meeting Retirement Announcement Dear Fellow Congregants, After eight years of editing The Menorah, I will be retiring effective June 30, 2021. I am seeking a volunteer to replace me and will gladly mentor that person prior to my retirement. The “raw” materials for the past 8 years are on a flash drive that will be “handed on” to the next Editor. With each issue, I have found ways to make tasks easier in each edition and have it down to “a science”. It is my hope that someone will “step up to the plate” sooner than later, so that I may provide a longer period of guidance. If you are at all interested or may have questions, please contact me at 706-364-6086. Little to no experience is required. Having knowledge of Word, Publisher, Acrobat Reader and any other publication software will be a plus. You will not be “in this” alone; others are there as contributors and proofers. Let me hear from you! Sincerely, Susan Steinberg Birthday/Anniversary Shabbat Each month that we are able to meet within the shul (with the exception of November 2020 and April 2021) we have Birthday/Anniversary Shabbat at which time we honor congregants who have these celebratory events with a cake or cupcakes at the Shabbat Morning Kiddush. (Beginning with October Birthdays and Anniversaries, during the final Friday evening virtual Shabbat service of the month, Rabbi will announce the current month’s honorees.) Honorees are recognized during announcements at the close of Musaf and though we list everyone in the Menorah, very few attend services on these special Shabbatot. You are very much encouraged to join us for these Morning Services so that you may be honored during your celebratory month. Also, consider sponsoring a Kiddush and/or Shalosh Seudos ( currently Shabbat Sponsors in Honor of) in honor of your day or maybe a family member will do so. The dates for this year are: Dates for 2020-21 11/27/20 (Recogniton at Virtual Friday Shabbat Service) 3/22/21 12/25/20 (Recogniton at Virtual Friday Shabbat Service) 5/8/21 (April & May) 1/30/21 6/26/21 2/27/21 15 AYS NewS CApSuleS(continued) Corned Beef Is Coming... March 14th & 15th, 2021…Save the Dates! Our 9th annual corned beef fundraiser will be here before we know it and this year will be drive thru ONLY on Sunday and delivery (10 or more lunches) and drive thru on Monday. Preparation and set-up will be a bit different this year as we mask up and social distance. This annual event is fun, delicious, and brings our whole congregation together. We realize that many of our previous volunteers are in the age category and/or have health issues which preclude volunteering. We will continue to have many tasks to perform and Corned Beef will need YOU! We will need our younger congregants to step up to the plate! Plan on volunteering for this annual event. You will be glad you did. Watch for more information in next issue of the Menorah. Preparing for drive by

Jenna is always prepared! TREE AND LIMB REMOVAL

Before After Shown above is the downed branch and the suspect Pictured above is the “treeless” playground. In early August, a branch of the hackberry hackberry tree as well as the very black Slide. tree fell onto the brick fence resulting in damage to the fence. The hackberry tree has been a nuisance for years, turning our yellow playground equipment black and requiring pressure washing annually. The tree is now gone and the branches which hung over the playground have been trimmed back. In this photo, the equipment had not yet been pressure washed as we wanted the tree gone first. The equipment is now bright and hopefully it will stay that way for a long time! Tree of Life Should you desire to purchase a Tree of Life plaque, please contact Jenna either by email [email protected] or by phone 706-733-9491. Do You Need a Notary? Our AYS Administrator, Jenna McRae is certified as a Notary Public. Should you need any documents notarized, she will be happy to do it for you; however, there is one request. Won’t you help us out again this year? Please complete the form below and return with your check payable to AYS Sisterhood (We collect all the checks and deliver one large check.) to WAYS, 935 Johns Road, Augusta, GA 30904.
