These Are Your Announcements for Monday, February 4, 2019. AL PHILADELPHIA-MONTGOMERY CHRISTIAN ACADEMY Good morning, Phil-Mont! These are your announcements for Monday, February 4, 2019. ALL SCHOOL BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. -- History.com While black history must be taught all year, highlighting black accomplishments for a special month is a celebration of black achievement in the face of adversary they have faced. Today’s Announcement - The first ever NBA game was played on November 1, 1947. Another important date--December 26, 1964. That day the Boston Celtics started five Black players, the first all-Black starting lineup in NBA history. The lineup consisted of four future hall of famers: Bill Russell, Sam Jones, KC Jones, and Satch Sanders, as well as small forward Willie Naulls. These five were the only five Black players on the roster, which was already shocking given an unwritten NBA rule at the time, in which owners only allowed their teams to employ a max of two black players on the entire roster. Celtics Owner Walter Brown and Coach Red Auerbach were the first to break this trend. More importantly, they did not integrate simply for the sake of integration itself. Take this Red Auerbach quote, “First of all, I had no idea that I started five black players until a writer pointed it out to me a few weeks later,” said Auerbach. “It didn’t make a difference to me what color any of my players were. I was putting the five best players out on the court so that we could win.” Auberbach was not trying to pander to the African-Americans on his team. He was simply doing what we all should: treating all humans with the same respect regardless of their race. SPORTS Boys MS Basketball at TCA Tournament; 3:00 PM Away; Dismiss 1:18 Girls MS Basketball vs. Springside/CHA; 3:45 Away; Dismiss 2:40 The Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up two huge league wins over Plumstead and Jenkintown this weekend. Friday night’s game with Plumstead was a back and forth battle, but in the end, your Falcons played stellar defense and Trevor drilled four big foul shots in the last minute, to pick up the 50-46 victory. Every player who took a shot on Friday made a three pointer; that’s nine players and nine threes. On Saturday, the team traveled to Jenkintown. Again, defense ruled the day. Rahiim, Josh, Mike and Trevor highlighted a strong defensive performance as they helped shut down Jenkintown’s top scorers. Mike and Trevor hit big three pointers in the fourth quarter and Dan made four big foul shots down the stretch to seal the 53-47 win. The team would like to thank all of their fans for making the “Blizzard” last all weekend! They’re expecting the same “White Out” conditions this week, as we wrap up the regular season and shoot for a league championship. The JV Boys Basketball team picked up a pair of close wins this weekend. Friday night they defeated Plumstead 36-27. Tom DeHeer hit three 3-pointers and finished with 16 points; David Olinger commanded the boards and added 9 points of his own. Then on Saturday afternoon, the Falcons held on in the 4th quarter to defeat a surging Jenkintown, 40-37. Despite being under the weather, Noah Schneider powered through 8 points each half for a game-high 16. The boys now enter the final week of the JV season with three big games this week! "As for the Lord, and not for men..." HIGH SCHOOL Chess matches for today in Mr. Bierema's room during flex: John vs. Joclyn, Job vs. Beri, Donovan vs. Shannon, Ben Chi vs. Helen, Jay vs. Journey, Micah vs. Nathan, and Mike vs. Ben Ruby. Members of the Carter G Woodson Society who are planning the Black History Assembly should meet today during flex in the library. Writer's Workshop begins today during Flex period. Anyone who wants to grow in their writing skills or who wants to share their work, enter competitions, get published, come join us. Room 109. Play practice today for groups 1, 4 & 5 from 3:15-5:15. Act 1 memorized! Interact will be selling candy grams for Valentine's Day during lunch, starting tomorrow. Write a personal note, pay a low price of $1, and we'll take care of delivering your sweet surprise to the person of your choice on Valentine's Day morning! Let your friends know how awesome they are! Tomorrow night is the Lunar New Year Celebration sponsored by the International Club. Come at 6:00 for food, door prizes and more. Tickets are $4 in advance or $5 at the door. Attention all Fall Semester Philosophy at the Movies students: please hand in your class surveys to Mr. McCarty by Wednesday - this is a graded assignment! All those who did the Tennyson poetry packets for Literary Forum but who did NOT attend the evening discussion must meet with Mr. L and Mrs. S in Room 109 for Thursday Lunch and Flex. We can still give you the EC for the past quarter. Attendance required for credit. Interact will meet during flex on Thursday. Interact is sponsoring three special dress days during the month of February to support a mission called Cast Your Cares. The first one is this Friday. Come to Mrs. V's room between 7:45 and 7:55am on Friday, pay $2 and receive special permission to wear your favorite sports jersey with uniform bottoms. See the poster outside of Mrs. V's room for more details. The Student Council is holding its annual Winter Dance this Friday at 7pm. The cost is $5 per person, and dress code is semi-formal. Each student may bring one guest from another high school, but a guest form must be signed. Grab one from Mrs. Nemec ASAP! Come out for a night filled with friends, food, music, and fun! Auditions for the Spring One Acts will be in a few weeks. Lots of great roles in four exciting plays. Great opportunity to star in a show without having to memorize too much or come to more than two rehearsals per week. Look for future announcements. Your chance to shine! Arthur Geller [born 1932] Arthur Geller lived in the West End from his birth until 1951, when his parents fulfilled their dream of buying a home and moved the family to Dorchester. Throughout his time in the West End, Arthur was very active with the West End House. As a boy, he participated in basketball, cross country, track and declamation programs there. At the West End House Camp, he progressed from camper to counselor to co-director. Geller was also associated with the Elizabeth Peabody House and Burroughs Newsboys Foundation. He attended the Peter Faneuil and Blackstone Schools, then English High School and Suffolk University. He served in the US Army from 1955-1957, largely in Japan. Geller’s sense of community remains to this day as evidenced by his work with various Boys Clubs and Neighborhood Youth Corps. He has contributed to preserving the history and culture of his old neighborhood by facilitating the transfer of West End House artifacts—such as trophies, awards and important papers—to the West End Museum archives.

The Hub City cherishes not only historic Faneuil Hall and the legendary Old North Church.
