Australia has thousands of wineries, dotted throughout 65 wine regions across the country. Our unique climate and vast landscape enables us to produce an incredibly diverse range of wine, which can be seen in more than 100 different grape varieties. Australian winemakers are proud creators and innovators and we are lucky to have the freedom to make high quality, bold wine, our own way. Our wines express the passion and diversity of the people who craft them and the unique regional characteristics of their origins. At this year’s tasting in Helsinki, we’ll be showcasing over 250 wines, representing 32 wine regions. You will discover wines from some of our most renowned regions, to the lesser known. Some of the wineries here you’ll be familiar with, but others you might not have come across before. 12 producers at the tasting aren’t yet in the Finnish market and are seeking an importer. Visit our Focus Tables to explore a diverse range of Australian wine, from the great classics to the contemporary. We have chosen two themes: ‘Australian Chardonnay and Shiraz’ and ‘The new wave of Australian wine’. On both tables, the wines display a unique sense of place, the personality of the winemaker and different winemaking techniques. Taste this exciting line-up and discover what makes Australian wine great. Exports of Australian wine continue to grow globally and there are encouraging signs of positive growth across a number of markets in Europe. The latest Export Report (MAT June 2018) shows that exports of Australian wine to Finland are up 6% to AUD $17 million. We have chosen two themes to showcase the quality and diversity of Australian wine. We hope the line-up demonstrates just how unique and exciting our wines are. The new wave of Australian wine With more than 100 grape varieties grown across 65 distinct wine regions, we have the freedom to make exceptional wine, and to do it our own way. While we respect tradition, we aren’t forced to adhere to regional rules. Our winemakers take traditional techniques and apply them in new ways. Varietal blends are played with, techniques are twisted and flavour rather than tradition rules. This focus table will introduce you to some of Australia’s most pioneering winemakers and their exciting, diverse styles of wines. Here you can try alternative grape varieties, organic wines and wines with little or no intervention. It’s also your chance to explore less familiar regions like Heathcote and Riverland. Some of these producers you may be familiar with, but others might be new discoveries. Some of the wines in the line-up aren’t yet in market and are seeking importer in Finland. Australian Chardonnay and Shiraz Australia’s signature varieties, Chardonnay and Shiraz, are grown across many regions and produce deliciously quaffable styles to magnificent age-worthy fine wines. They put Australia on the map in the 1980s, but a lot has happened since then. These wines are from a mix of regions, from Margaret River in the west to Hunter Valley in the east. As well as discovering geographic and stylistic differences, you can compare new releases with older vintages. This line-up also demonstrates new wave winemaking techniques and cool climate styles. If you think you know Australian Chardonnay and Shiraz, then think again. Chardonnay In the 1980s, everything was big: expense accounts, shoulder pads and Chardonnay. Australian Chardonnay was renowned for being rich, oaky, full of flavour and ripe fruit. With varying winemaking techniques and cool climates sites, there’s now a new wave of Australian Chardonnay: wines with freshness, elegance and texture. Shiraz Shiraz first made its way to Australia two hundred years ago: John MacArthur is widely credited with importing the first cuttings in 1817 from Europe. Today, Shiraz is Australia’s biggest exported grape variety. But Australian producers aren’t resting on their laurels, like with Chardonnay, they’re perfecting old concepts and playing with new ideas to continue the evolution of Shiraz.
