Hanmer Christmas parade through the eyes of an Aucklander.

I was sitting beside a couple from Auckland watching the Christmas parade in Hanmer last night. They were blown away by the beauty of our village and all that it has to ofer and wished that they had discovered it earlier.

The Heritage Forest, the walking and biking tracks, the pools, the mountain vistas, the friendliness of the locals, the tranquil surrounds, sounds of birds….

They were also delighted with the excitement of children gathering the scattered lollies during the parade and told me that Auckland kids missed out on lollies this year Fire Permits Now Necessary because of Covid …”ripped of” they said! Refuse and Recycling over Christmas and New Year

There is no change to the refuse and recycling collections in Hanmer Springs over Christmas and New Year. Please remember the following.

• Only ofcial Hurunui Council bags will be collected. • Bags must be securely tied and at the kerbside by 8am as collection times may vary to normal. • Refuse bags must not exceed 15kg in weight. • Bags split prior to the crew’s arrival and non-ofcial bags will not be collected.

Type to enter text The following are accepted, providing they are clean and loose in a Council recycling bag.

• Newspapers, magazines, ofce paper and telephone directories. • Cardboard, greetings cards, junk mail, envelopes and egg boxes. • Food, drink and pet food cans. • Rigid plastic bottles and small containers, types 1, 2 and 5 only with lids removed.

Bundles of cardboard will not be collected from the kerbside; these need to be taken to Councils transfer sta- tions to be recycled.

What cannot be recycled? Soft plastics (i.e. those that can be scrunched in your hand), plastics numbered 3, 4, 6 and 7, tetrapaks, poly- styrene (including meat trays), plant pots, clothing, shoes and food waste are not recyclable. If in doubt throw it out. Recycling bags containing contaminants will be stickered and left.

Recycling wrapping paper and cards Wrapping paper and cards can be recycled but we cannot recycle foil and glittery wrapping paper, glittery cards, ribbons, bows and tape, as these will contaminate recycling.

Recycling glass bottles Glass bottles must not be put in recycling bags but can be recycled via any transfer station providing all lids are removed.

Households in Hanmer Springs can have glass bottles collected, providing they are in a Council issued recycling box, with all lids removed. Cardboard boxes containing glass bottles will not be collected.

Where to purchase Hurunui Council refuse and recycling bags? Ofcial bags can be purchased at Hanmer Springs Four Square and Hanmer Springs Service Centre.

Transfer Station Arrangements All transfer stations are closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and January 1 and 2. Normal hours apply at all other times. Amberley transfer station will open on Tuesday 29 December and Tuesday 5 January from 10am to 4pm.

Plastic types 1 and 2 are things like soft drink, juice, milk and cream bottles and ice cream containers. Type 5 plastics are often used for large yoghurt containers, margarine, spreads and less rigid containers.
