GETTING STARTED: Tonight’s first pitch was at 7:07 p.m.…Game-time temperature was 79 degrees.
TONIGHT’S ATTENDANCE was 34,018…The 58-date season total is 1,786,985…Average attendance is 30,810.
OUCH: J.J. Hardy did not start for the second consecutive game due to a sprained left thumb.
MACHADO INJURED: Manny Machado left the game in the bottom of the third inning after grounding out to shortstop with a sprained right knee. He will be re- evaluated tomorrow.
BIZARRE PLAY: The Yankees scored two runs in the second inning when, with Carlos Beltran on third and Chase Headley at first, Headley broke for second base but stopped halfway. During the ensuing rundown, Steve Pearce threw to third base to try to catch Beltran off third. Beltran broke for the plate and Manny Machado’s throw hit Beltran in the helmet, allowing him to score. Headley advanced to third on the error and then scored when Bud Norris retrieved the ball and threw it toward catcher Caleb Joseph, who was not looking. Headley scored from third as the ball rolled away.
REPLAY: The Orioles challenged a call in the bottom of the third inning when Nelson Cruz took a pitch from Chris Capuano. The Orioles argued the pitch hit Cruz on the foot and replay overturned the call, awarding Cruz first base. The time of the replay was three minutes, 24 seconds.
SERIES OPENERS: The Orioles have won eight consecutive series openers and are 25-15 in series openers (13-7 at home).
