Pope Francis Appoints Auxiliary for Diocese of Rockville Centre Returns Native Son Bishop Robert Coyle back to Long Island

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – February 20, 2018 – today ap- pointed Most Reverend Robert J. Coyle, 53, to serve as an auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Rockville Centre (www.drvc.org). Until today, Bishop Coyle was serving as Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Half of the , Archdio- cese for the Military Services. The appointment was made public in Washington, February 20, 2018 by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Coyle will begin serving the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre on April 2, 2018. “I am extremely grateful to the Holy Father, Pope Francis for assigning us Bishop Coyle,” said Most Reverend John O. Barres, Bishop, Rockville Cen- tre. “I am also truly grateful for Bishop Coyle’s pastoral service and for his leadership to the young men and women who defend our great country. Bishop Coyle will assist me and auxiliary Robert Brennan and Andrzej Zglejszewski in the pastoral ministry of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.” “Today, I humbly accept the appointment to serve the People of God on Long Island as auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Rockville Centre,” said Bishop Coyle. “Years back there was a spirit campaign with the expression, ‘I’m a Long Islander and proud of it!’ I again can say that here as a native son I look for- ward to assisting Bishop John Barres, Bishop of Rockville Centre, in our pursuit of Dramatic Missionary Growth on Long Island.” Bishop Robert J. Coyle Back in February 2013, Pope Benedict XVI appointed then Rev. Msgr. Coyle to serve as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of the Military. At that time, Msgr. Coyle was serving as pastor of Corpus Christi parish in Mineola. The son of Robert and Kathyrn Coyle, Bishop Coyle was born in Brooklyn in 1964. He is the product of a life-long Catholic education and was ordained to priesthood by Bishop John R. McGann in 1991. He then served as associate pastor of the parish of Saint Dominic, Oyster Bay and then in the parish of Saint Patrick, Glen Cove. Bishop Coyle served 24.5 years on active reserve duty before his retirement from the Naval Reserve on January 1, 2013. Serving as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy brought Bishop Coyle to the Middle East to serve on an aircraft carrier and to Norfolk, Virginia to care for the spiritual needs of sailors and their families. During a three year assignment aboard the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, Bishop Coyle de- ployed to the Middle East and served in Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then served as chaplain to the young men and women studying at the Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point. While assigned to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, Pope Benedict named him a chaplain of honor with the title of Monsignor in 2008 in recognition of his outstanding service caring for the spiritual needs of Catho- lics and others of all faiths in the U.S. Navy. As auxiliary bishop, Bishop Coyle will join Bishop Robert J. Brennan, Vicar General and Auxiliary Bishop and Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski, Auxiliary Bishop, Western Vicariate in assisting Bishop Barres to serve the sacramental, spiritual and pastoral needs of the 1.4 million Catholics residing in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

February 25, 2018 2nd Sunday of Lent Maria La Rocca How are your Lenten resolutions? By the time week two rolls Anthony Pagano around, plenty of well-meaning people have skipped, neglected, or Frank O’Donnell outright forgotten their Lenten resolutions at least once. It can be easy to start excusing our Lenten commitments altogether. Last week we saw Jesus driven into the desert. This Sunday, we see Jesus leading His disciples to an equally barren place: He “led them up a high mountain apart by themselves.” But what happens there? “And he was transfigured before them and his clothes became dazzling white.” Today’s Gospel reminds us of the goal. We don’t enter into the desert for the sake of suffering, but for the sake of transformation. Mountain imagery is prevalent throughout Scripture. The sacrifice of Isaac, Moses receiving the 10 Commandments, Elijah’s revelation of God as a tiny whispering sound: all these occur on the mountaintop. Mountains are strenuous to hike. To assist the traveler in the assent, trails often involve switchbacks. These lead the traveler back and forth across the mountainside, sometimes BAPTISMS appearing as if hardly any ground is gained. Perhaps Peter, James, and John hiked a similar path as Jesus led them up the side Lucas Matthew Lordahal of Mount Tabor. Thomas Christopher Cardi- A climb is difficult. A climb in a barren place leaves you thirsty, exhausted, and quite possibly frustrated or discouraged. Yet this is precisely how Jesus leads his closest disciples. Why? Observances for the Week of February 25, 2018 Because he has something to reveal to them. Practically speaking, Jesus needed to bring Peter, James and John away from the Sunday: 2nd Sunday of Lent crowds for this revelation of glory to remain hidden. There are Friday: Day of abstinence spiritual truths we will encounter only if we pass through diffi- Saturday: St. Katharine Drexel, Virgin culty. So let’s persevere this Lent! “Lent is a favorable season for opening the doors to all those in need and recognizing in them the face of Christ. Each of us meets people like this every day” ~Pope Francis

Dear Friends: During the special Lenten season, please allow me to share a special request with you. If you have never con- tributed to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, or if you haven’t contributed in a number of years, please consider making this the year that you join with me and other members of this Parish family and make a donation to the 2018 Appeal. As you may already be aware, 100% of all the money raised by this fund helps support more than 60 pro- grams and services that the people of our church as well as all of the people on Long Island have come to rely on. These programs include services to people in need; affordable housing for senior citizens; people with dis- abilities and our veterans, as well as formation of our priests, deacons, lay leaders, and young people. These are just a few of the programs that help make our church and this Island a vibrant and wonderful place to live. But to help ensure that we can always serve those who come to us for aid, support and spiritual guidance, we need help from you!

If 100 of our parishioners, who have not supported us in the recent past, made a $25 contribution this year – think about how many more people we could help. If that amount is more than you can manage, consider $5 or $10. Every gift counts and makes a difference in the lives of others!

St Baldrick’s

It's that time of year again and we're kicking off our 2018 effort to fight childhood cancer by raising funds through the annual St. Baldrick's head-shaving event on Sunday, March 11th at Miller's Long Island Ale House in Commack (3:00 pm).

Last year our Knights of Columbus team raised over $6,100 and all together over the last 11 years, we have raised almost $90,000 to fund cancer research! All of us have been touched by this disease and your support over the years has led to unbelievable breakthroughs in cancer research. If you would like to join in the effort to fight this dread disease, please go to our Fr. Thomas A. Judge K of C team website at www.stbaldricks.org/teams/FrJudgeKofC2018 and click on "Donate" or contact Bob Slingo at (631) 486-2875. Thank you!

Childrens Mass Ministry

Come to celebrate your child’s March birthday on the first Sunday, March 4th at the 9 am, family Mass with children.

What better way to celebrate a birthday? In the church with the presence of God, with the community of St. Anthony of Padua and with other children. This is a great time to remind them of what Christ did for them. Par- ents have the power to make lasting spiritual impressions on their children. During the season of Lent. Lent offers us opportunities to pass on your faith to our children. Here are some ideas for making Lenten memories: Lent fosters self-discipline and pro- motes spiritual growth. Pray together. Even if it's just an Our Father or Hail Mary, it unites the family. Train them to make sacrifices, and to help others, daily spiritual read- ing Bring them for The Sacrament of confession. “God, I am sorry for my sins, help me to love Jesus and sin no more.”
