POSITION PURPOSE: To increase aesthetics, reduce repair cost, and increase longevity of equipment providing metal fabrication services to various departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
• Develops layout and plans sequence of operations for fabricating and assembling structural metal products, applying trigonometry and knowledge of metal. • Sets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, and drill presses. • Sets up and operates machine tools associated with fabricating shops, such as radial drill, end mill, and edge planer.

• Tack-welds or welds components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment. • Preheats workpieces to render them malleable, using hand torch or furnace. • Cuts workpiece, using powered saws, hand shears, or chipping knife. • Melts lead bar, wire, or scrap to add lead to joint or to extrude melted scrap into reusable form. • Installs or repairs equipment, such as lead pipes, valves, floors, and tank linings. • Inspects grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring instruments. • Removes rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper. • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. • Heats, forms, and dresses metal parts, using hand tools, torch, or arc welding equipment. • Provide assistance to other departments as needed. • Perform other duties as required.

• High quality equipment repair is provided in a timely manner reducing equipment downtime. • Work is completed according to the request of the person or Operating Department. • Effective working relations exist with City personnel. • New employees are well trained and assisted. QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES: Welding certification (preferred).
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE: Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
Design — Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
Building and Construction — Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to work with different types of steel and welding rods. Handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Accurate and attentive to detail. Good communications and public relations abilities. Ability to assist and support others. Able to operate telephone, PC, copier, and other basic business machines.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION
FINGER DEXTERITY: Manual dexterity sufficient to work with the fingers.
VISUAL ABILITIES: Normal vision, with or without corrective lenses.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH: PDC Level: Heavy Employee lifts/carries 80 lbs occasionally (less than 33% of the time or 1-100 times per day). Heavy physical activity required performing somewhat strenuous daily activities of a mechanical nature. Frequent standing, over the head lifting, twisting, carrying, climbing, and balancing required.
LANGUAGE/COMPREHENSION: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few variables in standardized situations.
MATHEMATICS ABILITY: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS: Regular – 8 hour shift, typically 7:30a.m. - 4:00p.m., Monday - Friday.
Other–Variable lunch period and breaks in coordination with other office personnel.
WORK CONDITIONS: Outdoor and indoor shop environment with adequate ventilation.
Noise level: Loud. Hearing protection required.
Other work conditions: Frequent exposure to extreme heat and vision hazards. Occasional work above ground where possibility of falling exists. Occasional work in an improperly illuminated, awkward, or confining space. Occasional exposure to air contamination.
