I decided to leave the Volksy home so it would not take the shine off the other cars! (Ha-Ha) I rode my motor- bike ( BMW 2005 R1100 RS. ) from Moonta down thru the “ guts” of the peninsular 100 kilometres to Vincent, and what a delightful ride it was , picture perfect-- cool and overcast and home along the coast under a pitiless blue sky. I bought a pretentious “real” silver and Safire cygnet ring at a stall for $10. It might suit my character —cheap, gullible and ostentatious! As usual lunch was a BYO at the Clerke’s, where we sat around comfortably swopping stories and generally shooting the breeze . Wishing you all a happy new year—Take it easy on the curves. Bronte.

PORT VINCENT GALA DAY- An excellent roll up of interesting vehicles and the great hospitality from Trevor & Lyn Clerke at their home. John and Jan mills looked to be busy with lots of jobs to be done. (Who did judge the sandcastles?) Good to see a lot of new faces and to have a chat. Two MAPS cars were given awards by the organisers; the Andrews’ Model A Ford and the Hicks’ 1924 roadster. Lovely to see real old cars coming to the fore in events. Bronte created some laughter with his lunch box which had been carried in his motor cycle pannier bag- who needs a blender? Best buy of the day? Some of Sandra Chappell’s (PADARC) biscuits. Mike O 8

OH DEAR- HE BOUGHT A STAG With the assistance of Triumph Stag owners both here and in Victoria, I bagged myself a Stag which was for sale due to the owner, Derek Gnauck moving interstate FROM Melbourne to WA . My spotter, Laurie gave me a realistic appraisal of the car and a price was agreed.

CEVA Car Carrying shipped the vehicle from Melbourne to Adelaide for just $415 - highly recommend CEVA for their service. Jim Sewell and my self headed off to collect it as the thunder and rain commenced in Ardrossan. Fortunately the car had the hardtop fitted and in under four hours, we were safely home in Ardrossan. The vehicle was friendly from the moment we met !- clicks and beeps plus occasional flickers from the lights- all due to a vehicle immobilizer system which was quickly AH, BUT THE COLOUR BLACK MATCHES MAISIE THE DOG disconnected! increased interior room, less noise reclining seats would all be features I could point out to my wife Mary! Why a Stag? I can hear some asking. With a reputation as being something of a lemon at a time when the British motor industry was being piloted by Kamikaze workers and management, plus a world oil crisis it’s easy to lose track of the fact that the Stag was a great design. Just the production quality and some poor decisions left this car in the doghouse for some years. Yes, perhaps the Rover /Buick V8 might have been a better power unit. Forty years on and Stags have generally been sorted out to provide great motoring, or been scrapped. Parts are relatively easy to obtain and nowhere near the precious jewelry prices of some makes. Club support and advice appears to be very good- the owners are very helpful. Along with the trip back from Adelaide and the short drives I’ve made so far, the car is nice to drive, but a completely different BEFORE IT BECAME S906BEH- but watch that plate space! one from its garage mate, the TR4A. The Stag’s power steering, the seating position and steering rake make it an easy drive. You can even hear the radio! There are a few jobs to sort out, but the engine with its V8 note sounds good. Thanks to Trevor and Dick for sorting out the CHRS so quickly, helped by our great local cop, Steve Moulds and Abbie at Service SA, Kadina. All done with no hitches which illustrates how helpful people are in Country SA. So when I take the car down to get a grease up and oil change, I can say it’s a …. “stag at bay” - lubrication bay! Mike O PS Must speak to MAPS member, Derek Rutter about him buying one too! 10
