Breaking Open the Word – 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Readings: 2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13 • Psalm 32:1-2, 5, 7, 11 • Galatians 2:16-21 •Luke 7:36 – 8:3

SYNOPSIS: The gospel message isn’t complicated. It’s based on two fundamental truths: 1. God is love (1 John 4:16) and 2. God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth (1 Tim. 2:4). This week, the central theme running through all three readings is justification. Don’t be put off by this seemingly murky religious word; it just means being made right with God. And this not of our own doing; it is an entirely free, unmerited gift of God who continually shows mercy to repentant sinners. In the first reading the prophet Nathan exposes David’s scheme to hide his adulterous affair with Bathsheba by orchestrating the murder of her husband, Uriah the Hittite. Nathan confronts David with the terrible truth of his crimes. Nathan loved David enough to tell him the truth, and David loved God enough to repent, confess his sin and seek God’s forgiveness. The reading from Galatians is one of clearest statements of justification by faith. Justification is more than just being ‘let off the hook’ - it involves a total transformation from the inside out. Faith is not simply some vague notion that God exists. It is the sincere response to God’s love and the acceptance of Christ into your life. It is, in a word, a relationship. It is the expression of solemn and sacred covenant. This week’s gospel reading vividly dramatizes the essence of gospel message and what it means to be justified. The parable of the two debtors illuminates the interior disposition of the sinful woman. Her extravagant act of devotion of washing Jesus’ feet with her tears and anointing them with precious ointment expressed her repentant heart. Notice that Jesus says “her sins have been forgiven.” She is not forgiven because of her act of devotion; her devotion is an act of love for him who had accepted her, sinner though she was.

Key verse: “Her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love.” (Lk. 7:47)

CATECHISM OF THE : “Justification is not only the remission of sins, but also the sanctification and renewal of the interior man. Justification detaches man from sin which contradicts the love of God, and purifies his heart of sin. Justification follows upon God's merciful initiative of offering forgiveness. It reconciles man with God. It frees from the enslavement to sin, and it heals.” [no. 1990]

POPE FRANCIS: “Today we consider the Church as the People of God, called to new life in Christ. We become part of this people through God’s gift of faith and spiritual rebirth in the waters of Baptism. Our law is the twin commandment of love for God and neighbor. Our mission is to be a leaven of the hope born of God’s love in our world wounded by sin and evil. Amid the darkness that so frequently surrounds us, we are called to be so many points of light, illumining all reality and showing the way to a better future.” [Audience, June 12, 2013]

LIFE APPLICATION: “I’m a good person. Why should I go to church?” This is a modern version of what Paul was talking about in the second reading. He was refuting those who thought that because they kept the Law of Moses, were “law-abiding citizens” (i.e. were ‘good people’) they didn’t need Christ. But as today’s readings show, there’s more to life than just obeying the law, following the rules and being “a good person.” What is a “good person” anyway? By what standard is goodness measured? As moral standards shift and change, so do our notions of goodness. And so in order to justify bad behavior we “define deviancy down,” in the words of the late Senator Patrick Moynihan. We’re not meant to settle for moral mediocrity. We’re meant for greatness. We’re meant for virtue. We are meant to be holy. We’re meant to be saints. As the Constitution on the Church says, “All Christian in any state or walk of life are called to fullness of Christian life and to the perfection of charity.” (Lumen Gentium, 40). The good news of this week’s readings can be summed up like this: every saint has a past; every sinner has a future. For the believer, there’s always hope. Because we have confidence in God’s love for us, confidence in his mercy, we can always repent, start over, and move forward.
