In footy’s 150th year, we pay tribute to the clubs and leagues that are the heartbeat of country WEST LATROBE FL MOE Founded: 1909 Nickname: The Lions Premierships: 1956, 1967 VFL/AFL players (include): Barry Rowlings (pictured below – Hawthorn, Richmond), Lachlan Sim (Brisbane) Short history Since foundation in 1909, the Moe Lions played the majorityMoe of seasons in the Football League before becoming a founding club of the League in 1954. The club fields sides in each of the WGLFL’s four grades. Defining moments Moe made the worst possible start in the newly-formed Latrobe Valley Football League in 1954, losing all 18 games that season. The Lions quickly atoned in the following seasons, rising to premiers in 1956 under coach Jervis Stokes. That game, against , was umpired by well-known VFL umpire and commentator Harry Beitzel. Great eras Moe’s second, and most recent, flag came in 1967 against a side that had won 18 games in a row. This was the first of six straight years in which Ian Jennings dominated the LVFL goalkicking with 52, 81, 84, 70, 112 and 90 respectively. He very nearly claimed the 1973 title as well, his 102 goals just two shy of Traralgon and future VFL star Kelvin Templeton’s 104. After the 1967 flag, Moe suffered a frustrating seven-year period in which it lost five Grand Finals, prompting scribes to dub the Lions the “Collingwood of the Bush”. Four of those losses were by less than four points. Club legends Moe has been well represented with league best-and-fairest winners, Lester Ross being the first in 1958. Allan Steel’s 1963 win was unusual in that his captain- coach, Don Keyter, polled the most votes, but was ineligible because of suspension. Future AFL-VFL players Rowlings (1973, 1974) and Sim (1988) also won the league’s top honour. When Jason Shields won in 2000, it was a family double on the night with his brother, Damien, winning the reserves medal.
