Through adoption, he's Dwayne The Rock Johnson's maternal grandfather. He was also part of the famous Anoa'i family and served as a promoter for the Hawaii National Wrestling Federation. [2] Wrestling career New Zealand and Australia (1964–1968) After spending her first twenty years in American Samoa, Maivia moved to New Zealand. He began his wrestling career by wrestling not as commander-in-chief, but as Prince Peter Maivia. Athletic, naturally talented and quick to study, Maivia got her original ring training in New Zealand under the eye of local wrestler/promoter Steve Rickard's supervisor. Both inside and outside the ring, Rickard taught the youngster the Same much about his new profession, and under his guidance Maivia developed at an astonishing pace. On August 3, 1964, after less than a year in business, the popular newcomer sensation stunned New Zealand's wrestling fan base by taking down the rugged, experienced Rickard to win the prestigious New Zealand heavyweight title in Auckland. The title was truly impressive, but Maivia's reign proved very short, holding the coveted New Zealand title for just three days, dropping the title back to Steve Rickard in Wellington on 6 May. However, this had been made clear and from then on Maivia had the status of main event in NWA's New Zealand territory. Later in 1964, Maivia continued her previous success by winning another highly prestigious title, the NWA Australasian Heavyweight Title. Maivia became the new Australasian champion by defeating Kangaroo Kennedy in Auckland, and would continue to carry her belt for four consecutive years before finally losing her title to Steve Rickard in 1968. As she developed her software and ring skills in New Zealand, Maivia slowly began to fork out and take reservations in other (and often larger) campaigns, and success invariably followed the popular islander. World Wide Wrestling Federation He was one of its most prominent stars, appearing in numerous championship wrestling. He worked in fights with a lot of people. renowned wrestlers who would continue to be WWE Hall of Famers, such as superstar Billy Graham, Ivan Putski and Bob Backlund. Personal life Maivia, also known as the Flying Hawaiian, was Malietoan Ali'i line. Maivia's traditional Samoan tattoos, which covered her stomach and legs, symbolise her commander-in-chief status. [2] [4] According to superstar Billy Graham, they were completed in three days. Maivia's grandson Dwayne The Rock Johnson revealed that they were made with traditional Samoan instrumentation: a small hammer, needle and ink. [citation required] His wife, Ofelia Fuataga, who became known as Lia Maivia, was considered one of the first promoters of female abscess. [5] He also adopted Lia's daughter Ata. [6] Maivia resented her daughter's relationship with Rocky Johnson because she was a wrestler. [8] The duo married despite Maivia's objections. [2] His son Peter Jr. also wrestled hawaii and the West Coast after the death of Peter's parents, sometimes under the name Prince Peter Maivia. Amituanai Anoa'i, the father of the Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika), considered Maivia a blood brother, so the Anoa'i family sees the Maivia line from him as an extension of his own clan. Maivia was also featured in the fifth James Bond film You Only Live Twice, in which she plays a driver who transports a masked Bond to Osato's headquarters. His character also fights Bond, is hit on the couch, wears a katana and put down when the statue breaks on his head. He was the film's (unsent) stunt battle coordinator. Death In 1981, Maivia was diagnosed with cancer. He died on The 12th. [2] Maivia was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame along with her son- in-law Rocky Johnson in 2008 with her grandson Dwayne Johnson. The award was accepted on his behalf by his daughter, Ata Maivia-Johnson. During his tribute video, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon refers to him as a tough S.O.B. and you didn't want to mess around outside the ring, but added that he was a really lovely, pleasant guy. Maivia's wife, Lia Maivia, died on October 19, 2008. [9] Legacy in disney animated film Moana in 2016 Maui's character design was rooted in photographs by Peter Maivia, according to interviews with his grandson Dwayne The Rock Johnson, who plays Maui in the film.
