3 Harwell // Everton // Drakeholes // Scaftworth Wildlife Notes from Everton Sluice Lane Mr & Mrs Crow have visited recently, together with junior crow, all very well behaved; unlike their cousins the rooks who were still to be heard squabbling in their rookeries. Also visiting once was a great spotted woodpecker, who comes for the peanuts. On a recent still morning, with a light northerly wind, we were pleased to hear the baa-baa of the lambs from the farm further along the lane. Back to the avian wildlife, we’ve seen wagtails on a couple of occasions, neat little birds that dart to and fro. A flock of swifts visited for a few days endlessly flying over the field opposite, picking bugs while on the wing. Barn owls are regularly seen around dusk, obviously they’ve chicks to feed. Starlings have finished breeding but still arrive in large flocks, of two dozen or more, to scour the lawn for grubs. It looked like a colourful butterfly, with bright crimson hind wings, but on looking-up, it was probably a burnet moth, which can have either five or six spots. Seen on the grass verge along the lane just where the Carrs begin; wont be seen in your wardrobe eating your best jumper. Sue & Mac June 2020
