Yoga has continued evolving and expanding throughout the time that’s why until nowadays it is still alive thanks to these masters that dedicated their life in order to practice and share their knowledge with the world.

In between the classical yoga of and the 20th century, has seen a revival. Luminaries such as Matsyendranath and Gorakhnath founded the Hatha Yoga lineage of exploration of one’s body-mind to attain and liberation.

In this lesson, we are going to study the modern history of Yoga from 1893 onwards.

Pattabhi Jois Pattabhi Jois founded Ashtanga Yoga. He was a student of Krishnamacharya for many years and his contribution has made Mysore one of the world’s major yoga hotspots.

Pattabhi jois said that he found the Vinyasa Krama or yoga flows in the book ‘Yoga Korunta’. The fundamental of the Ashtanga system is moving from posture to posture while focusing on the breath. This creates an inner heat that purifies from within. Today about 80% of the classes across the world in studios are Vinyasa driven. A testament to the work of Pattabhi Jois in popularizing movement in yoga. In classical Hatha Yoga the fundamental focus is Stillness. So, Vinyasa represents a radical shift, at least when it began around 75 years ago.

There are 6 series of Ashtanga Yoga, progressively more challenging. Generally the beginner series is practiced in studios across the world, and intermediate series classes and workshops can be found. The idea is that unless you master all the of a particular sequence you cannot go up to the next. Generally the advanced series are not taught but are practised in Mysore or as workshops.

Pattabhi Jois died over 10 years ago aged 93. Again, a testament to his Yoga practice. We've chosen to speak about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, because he worked tirelessly to take meditation to western audiences with his Transcendental Meditation. TM was the world's first branded and researched meditation technique. All the studies show the huge benefits of Transcendental Meditation.

Later in the 1980s Mahesh Yogi worked to spread to western audiences.

At the height of his popularity in the 1960s he was the for counterculture, being the guru to the Beatles, who came and lived in his for three weeks in Rishikesh. He also spoke at the original Woodstock festival in 1969.

Note on Rishikesh: This put Rishikesh on the global map for modern spiritual seekers. It has always been a place for holy men. But from the 1960s it has attracted modern seekers equally. It is called the world capital of yoga.

Transcendental Meditation attracted a fair deal of curiosity owing to the fact that the meditators were said to levitate momentarily or rather ‘jump-up’! this however is not the most significant aspect; what is amazing is the benefits that the breathing techniques brought about in the mind of the practitioner. Bikram Chaudhary A brief note about Bikram Choudhury. In the 1980's he set up a massive yoga institute in Los Angeles, California. As word spread amongst Hollywood he became really famous going to teach many stars, celebrities and even politicians.

Bikram founded the system where yoga was practiced in a heated room. Number sequence of 26 Asanas including a couple of breathing techniques. In America he got a patent for the ‘sequence of asanas’ as his intellectual property right, better than no patent or copyright was granted as Yoga is considered to be traditional wisdom.

Over the years, he became more successful, and started conducting courses in America. It helped spawn the yoga industry we see today.

However his own moral conduct in terms of sexual misdemeanor came to light and he had to leave America. As a consequence, many Bikram Hot Yoga centers have now changed the name from Bikram to just Hot Yoga.

The reason we are discussing Bikram is to show us how Yoga is so vast and has so many different personalities who have in some way added to making yoga the pop culture phenomenon it is today. Baba Ramdev Baba Ramdev is the most well known indian Guru and Yoga teacher known for his work in ayurveda, business, and agriculture. He popularised Pranayama and Yoga asanas on Indian television.

Osho Rajneesh Rajneesh emphasised the importance of meditation, , love, celebration, courage, creativity, and humour. Qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static systems, religious tradition, and socialisation.

In advocating a more open attitude to he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru". in the history lesson you will learn about the modern period of yoga, pattabhi jois, maharishi mahesh yogi, bikram chaudhary, baba ramdev, osho rajneesh, and sadhguru jaggi vasudev Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev Sadhguru is the most famous Guru today and has worked on bringing people's attention to the spiritual practice.

He founded Isha, a non-profit spiritual organization in , India and in America Hatha Yoga teacher training courses, and meditation courses and events. He is one of the most followed spiritual masters globally.

He speaks on a wide variety of topics including humanitarian and environmental issues.

As the keynote speaker at the WEF (World Economic Forum) and the United Nations, he managed to inspire and influence thought leaders and millions of people across the world. QUIZ

OM NAMAH SHIVAYA MANTRA

Om Namah Shivaya Mantra is most popular and powerful . Also called as the Panchakshari mantra, we find the five syllabled mantras Namashivaya (Na + Ma + Shi + Va + Ya) attributed to Lord and affixed with ‘Om’, the primordial sound. The mantra literally, “I bow down to Shiva”.

The Namashivaya mantra corresponds to the five elements. The syllable ‘Na’ refers to the earth; the syllable ‘Ma’ stands for water; the syllable ‘Shi’ represents fire; the syllable ‘Va’ signifies Air and the syllable ‘Ya’ indicates space/ether. Relating the five elements to the human body, we find the earth becoming the bones and flesh, water turning into blood and plasma, fire playing the role of the digestive juices, Air becoming the breath and the ether manifesting as the mind. Thus, man is the product of the five elements. Hence, we find the Om Namah Shivaya mantra addressing the source of body, mind and spirit.

Om is the seed mantra (Bija mantra) of Ajna , the Sixth Centre. ‘Na & Ma’ are sounds of the Fifth Centre, Vishuddhi chakra. ‘Shi & Va’ are sounds of the Second Centre, Swadhisthana Chakra. ‘Ya’ is the sound of the Heart, Anahata Chakra. These are the sounds or mantras, which correspond to the in the body. In yoga, when you say ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, you are actually affecting and altering the behavior of the in these Subtle Energy Centers. NOTES
