Understanding Academic Performance Scores The Educator Effectiveness System is designed to evaluate classroom teachers based upon classroom observations, teacher specific data, elective data, and building level data. The building level data is used to develop the school academic performance score displayed as part of the Pennsylvania School Performance Profile (SPP). The SPP score comprises fifteen percent of each classroom teacher and principal/school leader evaluation beginning with the classroom teacher rating in the 2013-2014 school year, and the principal/school leader rating in the 2014-2015 school year. The score for a school is based upon indicators that define a high performing school. Many data elements come together to create the academic score. These elements are categorized into five areas. The first three areas represent fifty percent of the school academic performance score: • Indicators of Academic Achievement - Include PSSA/Keystone performance, industry standards-based competency assessments, grade three reading proficiency, and SAT/ACT college ready benchmarks. • Indicators of Closing the Achievement Gap - All student scores are used to define how well a school is making progress toward proficiency of all students. • Indicators of Closing the Achievement Gap - Historically underperforming students’ scores are used to define how well a school is making progress toward proficiency. The high-needs students are students who have historically not demonstrated proficiency. This category represents forty percent of the school academic performance score: • Indicators of Academic Growth/PVAAS - Measures the school’s impact on the academic progress of groups of students from year-to-year. This category represents ten percent of the school academic performance score: • Other Academic Indicators - Assesses factors that contribute to student achievement (e.g., graduation rate, promotion rate, attendance rate). Schools may earn up to seven additional points via Extra Credit for Advanced Achievement based upon advanced performance on state and industry assessments, as well as for students earning a three or higher on an advanced placement exam or four or higher on an international baccalaureate exam. Note 1: Data is displayed for each element if there are eleven or more students represented. This includes all the performance measures used to determine the academic performance score. Note 2: Closing the achievement gap measures are based on a closure expectation over six years. Clicking on an underlined performance measure for closing the achievement gap will display the calculations associated with that measure. To view the data and the calculations that contributed to the SPP score please visit the Pennsylvania School Performance Profile website at http://www.paschoolperformance.org/ and select the Hempfield Area School District and the name of the school you would like to view.

Karlee Schneider Crowned 2016-2017 Homecoming Queen For the second year in a row, heavy rain did not dampen the spirits of the homecoming court and students of Hempfield Area School District. Students, parents, and friends lined the street as the parade proceeded along Route 136, making its way to the high school stadium to watch the Hempfield Spartans defeat the Altoona Mountain Lions 28-0. The rain didn’t let up for the halftime festivities as the court’s escorts held umbrellas over the girls in an attempt to keep them dry. Karlee Schneider was crowned homecoming queen, representing the class of 2017. "Being crowned homecoming queen was something that I never expected to happen for me in high school, and when they announced my name, I was shocked and overcome with so much joy! I'm so thankful for all the wonderful ladies I was on court with, who were all so lovely and kind. The whole experience was like David Vezendy, Grade 12 Homecoming court pictured left to right: Michelle Burns, Anne-Marie a fairytale come true." After Eric Nordby was crowned homecoming king by popular vote of the senior class, he escorted the homecoming queen, Karlee Schneider, to the dance floor for the traditional king and queen dance. The homecoming dance is a wonderful end to a week of homecoming festivities that included spirit days, a pep rally, and of course, the crowning of the homecoming queen.

Quiz Team Students Successful on All Fronts The Hempfield Area Quiz Team, consisting of ninth through twelfth grade HEP students, competed against six different teams to obtain their ranking for an upcoming tournament in January. Ten students participated in six different team rounds, each consisting of twenty-six to thirty questions. The JV team has an undefeated record of six and zero while the varsity team has a record of four and two. JV’s top scorer for both competitions was Chris Venzin, responsible for fifty-eight of his team’s points. Varsity’s top scorer remained the same with AJ Lazar garnering eighty-six points. Both teams are continuing to prepare for the final tournament coming up in the new year. Seniors Annie Iezzi and Nick Ross, along with junior Meg Jones, made up the winning first place team overall in the Public Speaking Competition. Annie Iezzi also received a second place individual award for her speech discussing Wishes, and Rhiannon Kelly individually scored fourth place with her topic, Toys and Gender. The Creative Convention competition focused on Greek mythology. A Hempfield team consisting of four HEP students placed third. Many skits were modeled around Pandora’s Nick Ross, Annie Iezzi and Box which they cleverly connected to the presidential Meg Jones with their first place election. In addition to their overall team award, Chris Venzin, certificates from the Public dressed as Zeus, won the best costume award. Speaking competition
