A RESOLUTION BY THE STATE TRANSPORTATION BOARD OF GEORGIA 2000
BO CALLAWAY, JR. HIGHWAY — DESIGNATED.
WHEREAS, Howard H. "Bo" Callaway, Jr. is credited with continuing the vision for Callaway Gardens, which is recognized as a national treasure and a regional showcase; and
WHEREAS, he grew up on this land under the influence of the founders of Callaway Gardens, his grandparents, Cason Jewel and Virginia Hand Callaway; and
WHEREAS, he continues to cherish Callaway Gardens' carefully-planned public gardens and woodland trails that display many native botanical species common to the Southeastern United States in their natural setting; and
WHEREAS, he was the chief architect of a master plan that is now moving this 14,000 acre preserve into the 21st Century; and
WHEREAS, he was very much involved in the plan to make this natural and vital resource even more accessible to visitors with the creation of a new entrance and 2.5 mile drive to the Gardens, working with the Georgia Department of Transportation, adjacent land owners and the Gardens planners; and
WHEREAS,, he selflessly served the Gardens as vice president, chief financial officer and president and also served on the Board of Trustees of the Ida Cason Callaway Foundation; and
WHEREAS, he graduated from Westminister High School in Atlanta in 1970, graduated from Duke University in 1974, and received a Masters degree from Harvard University in 1981; and
WHEREAS, he and his wife Allyn have three beautiful daughters all of whom are good students and athletes; and
WHEREAS, he and his wife are avid bicyclists, having biked together the entire length of California and he and his brother Edward have biked several trips including crossing the continental divide seven times; and
WHEREAS, he spent ten years as vice president of Gerald Hines and Associates in Houston; and
WHEREAS, he also served on the board of directors of the Valley Partnership and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce as well as served as president of the board of directors for the Pine Mountain Tourism Association and the Harris County Chamber of Commerce.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that State Route 18 from Pine Mountain to Interstate 185 be named the "Bo Callaway, Jr. Highway." IT IS RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting and that Mr. Callaway be provided a suitable copy of this resolution and the Commissioner of Transportation be instructed to install appropriate signs designating this facility.
