ACE's Scandinavian Sojourn
ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums. -

Flexible Games by Which I Mean Digital Game Systems That Can Accommodate Rule-Changing and Rule-Bending
Let’s Play Our Way: Designing Flexibility into Card Game Systems Gifford Cheung A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: David Hendry, Chair David McDonald Nicolas Ducheneaut Jennifer Turns Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Information School ©Copyright 2013 Gifford Cheung 2 University of Washington Abstract Let’s Play Our Way: Designing Flexibility into Card Game Systems Gifford Cheung Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor David Hendry Information School In this dissertation, I explore the idea of designing “flexible game systems”. A flexible game system allows players (not software designers) to decide on what rules to enforce, who enforces them, and when. I explore this in the context of digital card games and introduce two design strategies for promoting flexibility. The first strategy is “robustness”. When players want to change the rules of a game, a robust system is able to resist extreme breakdowns that the new rule would provoke. The second is “versatility”. A versatile system can accommodate multiple use-scenarios and can support them very well. To investigate these concepts, first, I engage in reflective design inquiry through the design and implementation of Card Board, a highly flexible digital card game system. Second, via a user study of Card Board, I analyze how players negotiate the rules of play, take ownership of the game experience, and communicate in the course of play. Through a thematic and grounded qualitative analysis, I derive rich descriptions of negotiation, play, and communication. I offer contributions that include criteria for flexibility with sub-principles of robustness and versatility, design recommendations for flexible systems, 3 novel dimensions of design for gameplay and communications, and rich description of game play and rule-negotiation over flexible systems. -

Cedar Point Debuts Biggest Investment Ever
SPOTLIGHT: Hoffman's reborn as Huck Finn's Playland Pages 26 TM & ©2015 Amusement Today, Inc. August 2015 | Vol. 19 • Issue 5 www.amusementtoday.com Cedar Point debuts biggest investment ever AT: Tim Baldwin [email protected] SANDUSKY, Ohio — Ce- dar Point no longer releases investment figures, but the re- sort has revealed that the Ho- tel Breakers makeover is the biggest investment the park has ever undertaken. With Top Thrill Dragster costing $25 million in 2003, that certainly speaks to what is on display for this season — and beyond. In addition to the new hotel grandeur, Cedar Point has also made new upgrades and ad- ditions in several areas of the park. Hotel Breakers dates back to 1905, a time when most guests coming to Cedar Point Cedar Fair recently completed its largest investment ever at the Cedar Point Resort. The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States. -

Does It Have Fur Or Feathers? a Categorisation of Theme Park Attractions
Does it have fur or feathers? A Categorisation of Theme Park Attractions Author: Frank Cornelissen Author ANR: U0396714 Supervisor: Pieter Cornelis 2nd Reader: Greg Richards Date: August 17th, 2010 Tilburg University Tilburg School of Social and Behavioural Sciences Department of Leisure Studies Preface & Acknowledgements One should think that the concept of ‘once bitten, twice shy’ would apply after finishing my bachelor thesis, yet a little over four months ago I once again found myself at the beginning of what then seemed an impossible task. The goal? To devise an empirically founded categorisation of theme park attractions. That task may seem simply at first, but when looking at attractions in the likes of, to name but a few, Tower of Terror, Hocus Pocus Hall, The Flying Dutchman, Lisebergtower, Hex or Dragon Khan, it will seen become apparent that each and every of these attractions is highly unique. As the seemingly endless imagination and the incredible skills that come into play in converting the most impossible of ideas into reality was part of what raised my interest in the theme park industry many years ago, that didn’t come as a surprise. It did, however, make things considerably more difficult. Luckily, I wasn’t on my own in taking on this challenge. First and foremost I would like to thank my supervisor Pieter Cornelis; I would not have been able to finish my thesis without his support, guidance, wisdom and ruthless criticism. I sincerely appreciate the advice Fetene Tekle, Marie-Anne Mittelhaeuser and especially Theo van der Weegen have given me regarding statistics in general and dimension reduction of dichotomous data in particular.
