PROGRAM NOTES By Amanda Sewell

Carmen Fantasy, Op. 25 Pablo de Sarasate

The Carmen by has been a smashing success ever since its premiere in 1875. The opera’s plot, filled with seduction, betrayal and violence shocked audiences. They watched in amazement as Don José spurned his fiancée Micaëla in favor of Carmen, in shock as Carmen abandoned Don José for the bullfighter Escamillo, and in horror as an enraged Don José murdered Carmen and then wept for having killed the woman he claimed he loved.

Bizet’s music, with its dance rhythms, memorable melodies and lively orchestration, also captured audiences’ attention from the very beginning. Carmen sings arias based on the Spanish dance rhythms of the Seguidilla (“Près des remparts de Séville”) and the Habanera (“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”). Bizet, who was French, had never actually been to or heard Spanish music performed in person. In fact, he based Carmen’s iconic Habanera on “El arreglito,” which he thought was a folk song. Later, he learned that “El arreglito” was not a folk song but rather a piece by the 19th-century Spanish composer Sebastián Yradier. Bizet did credit Yradier as the composer of the song in the opera’s score.

Carmen was so successful so quickly that many composers jumped to create orchestral versions of the opera’s music. Bizet had died only a few weeks after Carmen’s premiere in 1875, but his friend and fellow composer Ernest Guiraud adapted key themes from the opera into two different orchestral suites. Guiraud’s Carmen Suite No. 1 was first published in the early 1880s and the Suite No. 2 followed in 1887. Another early adaptation of music from Carmen was the Carmen Fantasy by the Spanish composer and violinist Pablo de Sarasate, first published in 1882.

Sarasate is widely regarded as one of the greatest violinists of the second half of the 19th century. Composers including Camille Saint-Saëns, Edouard Lalo and all dedicated works to him. Sarasate did some composing as well, and most of his works were fantasies for violin and orchestra based on by composers including Charles Gounod, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Carl Maria von Weber.

The Carmen Fantasy was Sarasate’s only piece based on Bizet’s music. An average performance is about 12 or 13 minutes in length, and the work unfolds in five distinct sections. Each section of Sarasate’s piece is based on music from Bizet’s Carmen, although not in the order in which it appears in the opera. The first section of Sarasate’s work is based on the Aragonaise, which is heard before the fourth and final act of the opera. The three middle sections are all based on music from various points in Act I (including the Habanera and the Seguidilla), and the finale is based on music from the start of Act II.

Violinist Sarah Chang has been playing Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy since she was a child. In an interview given when she was ten years old, she proclaimed that she loved playing this piece not because it is hard but “because it’s really fun!”

Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36 Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

The late 1870s were a difficult time for Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, both personally and professionally. In 1877, he married a woman named Antonina Ivanovna Milyukova. The marriage was a disaster for many reasons, not the least of which was the fact that Tchaikovsky was gay. Accounts vary about why they chose to separate. Tchaikovsky claimed that the marriage caused him to have a nervous breakdown that led him to fall unconscious for two weeks; when he awakened, a doctor ordered him to never see his wife again to prevent future episodes. Milyukova, who knew her husband was gay and who had agreed to a strictly platonic relationship, claimed that evil tongues told her that their marriage would ultimately decimate Tchaikovsky’s creativity.

Tchaikovsky repeatedly embarrassed himself during this period because he was regularly overspending his teaching salary from the Moscow Conservatory. He struggled creatively during this period as well. Some of the trouble was likely due to the stress of his marriage, but he also had difficulty finding time to compose because he was spending so much time and energy teaching at the Conservatory.

Tchaikovsky’s literal and figurative fortunes had changed by the fall of 1877. He and his wife separated, and he found a loyal and generous patron in a woman named Nadezhda von Meck. Recently widowed and quite wealthy, Meck supported Tchaikovsky for the rest of his life. She paid him approximately six thousand rubles per year (the average government employee in Russia at the time made less than ten percent of that amount), which allowed him to leave his teaching position and to focus exclusively on composition. The two never met in person, but they corresponded regularly and extensively for fourteen years.

One of the first pieces written in this period of new artistic freedom was the Fourth Symphony. He had sketched parts of the symphony early in the year but set it aside during the disastrous period of his marriage. Once separated from his wife, Tchaikovsky returned to the symphony and completed it relatively quickly. Tchaikovsky dedicated the piece to Meck, a gesture of gratitude for the financial support she was providing. In response to a letter in which she asked if the symphony had a program, Tchaikovsky wrote, “The introduction is the seed of the whole symphony [and] undoubtedly the main idea. This is Fate. This is that fateful force which prevents the impulse to happiness from attaining its goal, which jealously ensures that peace and happiness shall not be complete and unclouded. . . . It is an invincible force that can never be overcome—merely endured, hopelessly.”

It is worth noting that Tchaikovsky did not print this program note with the symphony, nor did he speak about this particular “fate motive” anywhere else but in this letter to Meck. Although the Fourth Symphony is now called the “Fate” symphony, it is uncertain whether Tchaikovsky truly meant for it to be interpreted that way or if he was writing that note only to Meck.

Interlochen Arts Camp is part of the nonprofit Interlochen Center for the Arts, a recipient of the National Medal of Arts and the only community in the world that brings together the finest in arts education, performance and public radio.

In consideration of the performing artists and other patrons, the use of flash photography is not permitted. Federal copyright and licensing rules prohibit the use of video cameras and other recording equipment.

In order to provide a safe and healthy school, Interlochen maintains a smoke-free and alcohol-free campus. Michigan law prohibits any weapons, including concealed weapons, on Interlochen property because we are an educational campus. Thank you for your cooperation. www.interlochen.org
