NAGA(NoͲGi)Rules  ishumankind’soldestsport.Throughouthistorythegoalof wrestlingineveryformiscontroloftheopponent.Forthousandsofyears, thiscontrolhasbeenrecognizedinthreedistinctwaysͲPinning,throwing, andsubmission.Folkstyle,Freestyle,andGrecoallendwitha.and endwitha.Butthegreatestexhibitionofcontrolofallsports isforcingyouropponenttoconsciouslysubmit.Itisthisstandardbywhich NAGAcontestsareinstantlywon.  ThefirstOlympicshadtwoformsofwrestling,matchesendedbyathrow, andmatchesendedbyasubmission.GrecoͲRoman”wrestlingcomesnot fromtheancientOlympics,butratherfromformsofwrestlingpracticedin Franceinthe1800s.NAGAleadsinatraditionthathasbeenpracticesince timeimmemorial.  Towardsthegoalofsubmission,playersgenerallytrytotaketheother playerdown,controlhimontheground,furtherthecontrol,andthenforce theopponenttosubmit.Asdetailedbelow,intheabsenceofasubmission, NAGArefereesaredirectedtodetermineviapointswhichplayerwas closesttogettingontop,gettingcontrol,andgettingsubmission.However, playersshouldnot“playpoints”rather,theyareencouragedtotryto submittheopponent.   NoͲGiPointsareawardedforthefollowing:  1or2Points  2Points SideControl 2Points   2Points SubmissionAttempt 1or2Points  IftheTakedownorSubmissionAttemptisnotdecisive,full,andstrong,one pointcanbeawardedbythereferee.   NoͲGiPointDefinitionsandDescriptions  TakeDownPoints: Inawardingtwopoints,therefereeisdirectedtolookforthefollowing: Theplayermustinitiatethetakedown; Theinitiatingplayermustexhibitrestrainingcontrol; Theinitiatingplayermustbeontop(higherthanthebottomplayer).  Ifaplayerfailstoexecuteafullandstrongtakedownasdefinedabove,one pointcanbeawarded.  Observations1:Ifyousnaptheotherplayerdownandheendsuponall fours,inordertoreceivetwopoints,youmustcomearoundandcontrol himfromtheback.  Observation2:Ifyousnaptheotherplayerdownandhepostsonhis hands,nopointsareawarded.Ifyouinitiateasnapdown(notasituation whereheshootsin)andheendsuponallfourswithyoucontrollingfrom histop,onepointwillbeawarded.  Observation3:Ifyoutaketheotherplayerdownbyjumpingontheirback andendupinBackMountfacingup,youareawardedtwopointsforthe takedown.YoualsoreceivetwomoreMountpoints.  Observation4:Ifyouexecuteahipthrowandenduponbottom,onlyone takedownpointisawarded.Iftheotherplayerendsupinsidecontrolor mount,twopointsareawardedforthecontrol(butnotforthe reversal/takedown).Iftheplayertakendownuseshistosweepthe otherplayerover,twopointswillbeawardedforthesweep.  Observation5:Aplayercaninitiateatakedownasacountertoanalready initiatedtakedown.Beingthefirsttoinitiateatakedowndoesnot guaranteethatonlytheoriginallyinitiatingplayercangettwopoints.  Observation6:Afull“Ippon”hipthrowwheretheinitiatingplayerends standingwhiletheotherplayerisflatonhisbackorsideisnotawarded twopoints(inSamboorJudoitwouldbematchending)asnocontrolis established.Inthissituation,onepointisgenerallyawarded.  Observation7:InordertoachieveRestrainingControl,youhavetoachieve apositionforasufficientdurationtoinitiatepassingguard,tofurther control,toinitiateasubmissionattempt,ortootherwisefurtheryour game.Thisisgenerallyafteroneortwoseconds.  Observation8:Takingaplayerdownandlettinghimup,onlytotakehim downagainwillnotresultinfurthertakedownpoints.  Observation9:Ifthebottomplayerinitiatesthestandup,andthenistaken downagain,twofurtherpointscanbeawarded.Theplayerwhostoodup muststandforlongenoughandbeinapositionwherethereisascoring opportunity.Poppingupmomentarilyonlytobeimmediatelytakendown againisawarded1point.  Observation10:Purposefullygoingoutofboundstoavoidatakedownwill resultintheplayerinitiatingthetakedownreceivingtwopoints.  Observation11:Ifoneplayerhastheotherinapositionfromwhicha takedownisinevitableandthematchisstoppedforgoingoutofbounds, twopointscanbeawardedtotheinitiatingplayerwithoutthetakedown havingtakeplace.  Observation12:Theplayertakendownmustbeonbothfeet.Theplayer initiatingthetakedowncanbeonbothfeet,bothknees,oronefootand oneknee.  Observation13:Itisnotpermittedtopullguard,or“buttflop”withoutfirst makingcontactwiththeopponent.Sittingdownwithoutcontactis concedingthetakedown,andresultsinonepointbeingawardedtothe standingplayer.   SweepPoints: Whenacompetitoronthebottomofanyguardisabletoreversethe positionandendupontopofhisopponent,2Pointsareawarded.  Observation1:Asweepisbydefinitiononlyapplicableifstartedinanytype ofguardposition.Areversalisexecutedfrompositionsotherthanthe guardandreceivesnopoints.However,ifareversalendsupwiththetop playerinsomeformofsidecontrol,thentwopointsareawarded.The2 pointshoweverareawardedforthesidecontrol,andnotforthereversal. Observation2:Whenacompetitoradvancesfromaguardtothebackofhis opponent(opponentisstillonknees),thecompetitorwillreceivetwo points.However,thetwopointsareawardednotforthesweep,butforthe Mount.  Observation3:IftheplayerexecutingasuccessfulsweependsupinMount orSideControl,afurthertwopointsareawardedforposition.  Observation4:TurtleGuardisnotrecognizedasaformofGuard.However, ifaplayerstartsinaformofGuardandthenaggressivelyinitiatesturtle position(notinresponsetoapass)andinonecontinuousmotionendsup ontop,atwopointsweepcanbeawarded.  SideControlPoints: SideControlisanysecureformoftopcontrol(exceptforthevariousMount variations)thatlendsitselftosubmission.Thecontrolhastobelong enoughtosetupasubmissionattempt,whichcanbeasshortasasecond, dependinguponthepaceofthematch.Themosthighpercentageformsof controlincludeCrossSide,HeadandArm,KneeonStomach,North/South. NAGAalsorecognizesasecureTopTurtle(kneeintight,faroneonone)as aformofSideControl.  Observation1:Nopointsareawardedwhenaplayertransitionsbetween oneformofsidecontrolandanother.Forexample,ifyouhaveSideControl andthenKneeonStomach,noadditionalpointsareawarded.  Observation:2morepointsareawardedwhenaplayermovesfromside controltoanyoftheformsofMount.  Observation3:Nopointsareawardedforescapes.This,ifyouareBottom Mount,andyoutoInGuard,nopointsareawardedasyouwent fromadisadvantageouspositiontoaneutralposition.  Observation4:InorderforSideControlpointstobeawarded,thetop playermustbecompletelypastthelegs.  Observations5:Thebottomplayerdoesnotnecessarilyneedtohavehis shoulderspinnedtothegroundinorderforpointstobeawarded.   MountPoints: WhenacompetitorsuccessfullymaintainsanyoftheMountpositionsfora lengthoftimeandofaformsufficienttoallowasubmissionattempt,two pointswillbeawarded.  Observation1:NAGArecognizesseveralvariationsofMountincluding Mount,BackMount,BackGrab,BackFigureFour,BackScissor,andReverse Mount(topplayerfacingtowardsthelegs).  Observation2:Theopponentcanbelyingonhisback,sideorstomachto receivetwoPointsforthemountposition.  Observation3:Onekneeandonefootonthegroundwillstillbe consideredthemountposition.Twofeetonthegroundisnotconsidered themount.  Observation4:Thecompetitorinthe(front)mountedpositioncanhave onekneeoverhisopponentsarm,butneverbothtoreceivemountpoints.  Observation5:ThecompetitorintheReverseMountcanhavebothfeet down,bothkneesdown,oronekneeandonefoot.Thebottomplayercan befacinguporsideways.  Observation6:ReverseMountwherethebottomplayerisfacingdown (BostonCrab)isnotawardedMountpoints.  Observation7:Atrianglechokeattemptfromtheguardthatendsina sweeptothemountpositionwillnotreceiveanypoints(forthemount). However,sweeppointsmaybeawardedforthissituation,aswellas submissionattemptpoints.  Observation8:Whenacompetitorcancontrolanopponent’sback,with bothfeetpositionedontheinnerthighsBackGrabhaswillberecognized. Onelegcanbehookedintotheleg,andonecanbehookedoverthearm ontheoppositeside.  Observation9:Withoneexception(seeObservation10)onlytwopoints aregivenformovingbetweenanyofthevariousMountpositions.For example,movingfromBackMounttoBackGrab,orfromFrontMountto ReverseMount,doesnotresultinafurthertwopointsbeingawarded.  Observation10:Movingfrom(Front)MounttoBackGrabwillresultina furthertwopointsbeingawarded.  Observation11:MovingfromMounttoSideControldoesnotresultina furthertwopoints,asitismovingfromasuperiortoaninferiorposition   SubmissionPoints: TwopointsareawardedforafullandstrongSubmissionAttempt.A Submissionisrecognizedasfullandstrongwhenisoneormoreofthe followingoccurs: Thefinishinquestionisnotalowpercentagesubmission(wristlock,body scissor,etc); Thedefenderis'InDanger'Ͳthefinishhasthepotentialforcompletion(ifa kneebarthehipshavetobeplacedcorrectly,ifachoketheneckmusthave beenreached,etc.); Theopponenttakestimetoescape; Uponescaping,theopponentdoesnotinstantlymovetoanattackofhis own,butinsteadassumesadefensiveposture. Dependingupontheseverityoftheinfraction,therecanbeanimmediate pointsdeduction,orimmediatedisqualification.  Themostcommongroundsforimmediatedisqualificationare: Flagrantdisrespecttoarefereeoropponent(swearing,shoving,etc); Intentionstriking: Intentionalslamming; Refusingtoreleaseasubmissionafteratapout.
