Blessing and Sprinkling of Holy Water • February 13 & 14 The Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling of Holy Water will be celebrated on : Saturday, February 13, during the 5:30pm Holy Mass Sunday, February during the 7:30am; 9:30am; 11:30am and 8:30pm Holy Masses * * * PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WATER TO BE BLESSED * * *

NNNNN Water as a Symbol in Liturgy Water gives life and purifies. These two natural characteristics invite its use in liturgy. Water is used in the sacrament of baptism (poured on the baptized person, or the person is immersed in water) and in the sacrament of the (a little water is poured into chalice along with wine, symbolizing humanity of Christ united with His divinity). As an apotropaic element, water is also blessed to be used within and outside of the liturgy. A purifying sprinkling with water is attested already in Merovingian (c. 500-750 AD) and Carolingian (750-987) monasteries (Gaul and Germany), where it developed into a weekly blessing and sprinkling before the liturgy in the 8th century. This rite was accompanied by Psalm 51 and the antiphon Asperges me – Sprinkle me. Parish churches in the Middle Ages slowly adopted this custom and it was included in the appendix of the 1570 Missal. However, the purifying motive was gradually substituted by that of remembering one’s baptism and this is how it was taken up by the 1970 Missal (the current liturgy). The sprinkling of holy water during funeral follows the motive of baptism as well and the sprinkling is accompanied by the following prayer: In the waters of baptism N. died with Christ and rose with Him to new life. May he / she now share with Him eternal glory. Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling The current liturgy o1ers the rite of blessing and sprinkling of holy water that can be celebrated on Sundays, especially in Easter Time, as a memorial of baptism. This rite substitutes the usual Penitential Act at the beginning of Mass, expressing the purifying action of baptism and reminding all the Christians of their commitment to live as people reborn from water and the spirit. Especially the prayer of blessing used during Easter Time shows how water gives a new life: Lord our God, in Your mercy be present to Your people’s prayers, and, for us who recall the wondrous work of our creation and the still greater work of our redemption, graciously bless this water. For You created water to make the fields fruitful and to refresh and cleanse our bodies. You also made water the instrument of Your mercy: for through water You freed Your people from slavery and quenched their thirst in the desert; through water the Prophets proclaimed the new covenant You were to enter upon with the human race; and last of all, through water, which Christ made holy in the Jordan, You have renewed our corrupted nature in the bath of regeneration. Therefore, may this water be for us a memorial of the Baptism we have received, and grant what we may share in the gladness of our brothers and sisters who at Easter have received their Baptism. Through Christ our Lord.

It is the intention of the Church, that Holy Water is used by the faithful as a remembrance of their baptism and new life in Christ. Page 4 Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish, Sterling Heights

JOSEPH Page 6 Consecration to St. Joseph Preparation Begins: February 15 5 Consecration Date: March 19

What does it mean to consecrate yourself to St. Joseph? What does it mean for a person to be consecrated to St. Joseph? Well, it basically means that you acknowledge that he is your spiritual father, and you want to be like him. To show it, you entrust yourself entirely into his paternal care so that he can help you acquire his virtues and become holy. Total consecration to St. Joseph means you make a formal act of filial entrustment to your spiritual father so that he can take care of your spiritual wellbeing and lead you to God. The person who consecrates himself to St. Joseph wants to be as close to their spiritual father as possible, to the point of resembling him in virtue and holiness. St Joseph, in turn, will give those consecrated to him his undivided attention, protection, and guidance. If you have already consecrated yourself to the Virgin Mary, can you be consecrated to St. Joseph, as well? The answer is a resounding“Yes!”God desires that all children be committed to the care of a mother and a father. You are not a member of a singleparent spiritual family. Mary is your spiritual mother, and St. Joseph is your spiritual father. The spiritual fatherhood of St. Joseph is extremely important for your spiritual growth. Total consecration to Mary is not diminished by total consecration to St. Joseph. Mary wants you to consecrate yourself to St. Joseph! Jesus wants you to consecrate yourself to St. Joseph! Everything you have given to Jesus and Mary can also be given to St. Joseph. The hearts of Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph are one. Program Overview Consecration to St. Joseph emulates the triedandtrue preparation method employed by St. Louis de Montfort in his Marian consecration, highlighting many of St. Joseph’s titles, privileges, and heroic virtues. The program of preparation and consecration takes 33 days. How to make your consecration as an individual: You'll spend about 2030 minutes a day on a short exposition on one of the invocations in the powerful Litany of St. Joseph, followed by a reading on St. Joseph, concluding with the recitation of the Litany of St. Joseph. If you miss a day, just make it up and continue your preparation. On the day of your consecration, feel free to use whichever act of consecration you like best; you can also make up your own, if you like. Limited Number of Books for the Consecration to St. Joseph are available in the Parish Office: $15

Total Consecration to Jesus thru Mary 33-Day Preparation begins : February 20 St. Louis de Montfort (1673 – 1716) had a profound and deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and wrote extensively on the virtues of Our Lady, what true devotion to her consists of, and how the faithful need to turn to her as the way to her Son, Jesus Christ. He recommends that the faithful formally consecrate themselves to the Blessed Mother. For this end he developed a specific 33-day program consisting of various prayers and readings to help the faithful detach themselves from the world and bond themselves more closely with Christ through the example and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Louis de Montfort stands in a long tradition of completely devoted to Our Lady, and his work has been influential in the lives of many other saints, one of the most famous among them is Pope St. John Paul II, who took his papal motto, "Totus Tuus" (Totally Yours) from de Montfort. This "Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary" consists of an initial 12-day preparation followed by a period of three consecutive weeks, each week focusing on a di@erent theme. It is recommended that the consecration be done on a major feast day of Our Lady, meaning that the preparation would begin 33 days prior. That is, after the 33-day program is completed, the formal Act of Consecra- tion is made on a Marian feast day. Once you make the consecration, it is for life. It can then be renewed annually. Keep in mind that this is a formal consecration to Our Lady, like a vow. Through this 33-day program you are giving Mary ALL of yourself - your heart, your mind, and your soul - in order to bring you closer and help you be more faithful to her Son, Jesus Christ. Also, that she may use you as a holy instrument in her battle with Satan - i.e. this consecration allows her the free reign in your life to make you holy (she assists you, through the Holy Spirit, to conform to her virtues) and to use your prayers, sacrifices, and su@erings for the greater glory of God. The next preparation begins on February 20, for all who wish to make, or renew their Consecration on March 25, the Annunciation of the Lord. “Preparation for Total Consecration” books are available in the parish o@ice for $10. Questions about making your Total Consecration, or to register to make (or renew) your Total Consecration, please contact: the Parish O@ice: (586) 726-6911 Page 7 Solemnity of Ss. Cyril & Methodius • Sunday, February 14 Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish, Sterling Heights Valentine’s Day is not just a day of wonder and joy for lovers and florists. February 14th is also the Feast Day of two Greek saints from Thessaloniki, the missionaries, linguists and diplomats Cyril and Methodius. [1] In 863, more than 1155 years ago, these Apostles to the Slavs set out on a journey, armed with an invention that would prove to be one of ’s richest and most civilizing contributions to European culture: an alphabet. In the preceding centuries, tribes of Slavs had been migrating around south eastern Europe. In those border territories of Byzantium both the Greek and Slavonic languages were in common use. But the Slav peoples had no alphabet or literary culture of their own. By the middle of the ninth century Prince Rastislav was the ruler of Great Moravia, in what is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Keen to build up the Great Moravian Church and to resist the control of the Frankish bishops and clergy, who looked upon Moravia as territory that properly belonged to their jurisdiction, Prince Rastislav wrote to the Byzantine Emperor, Michael III, asking him to send teachers who could lay before his people the truth of the Christian faith in their own language. Cyril and Methodius were chosen. They invented an alphabet, so that they could translate the Scriptures and the Liturgy into Slavonic. When we think of the impact of the Christian religion on the culture of Europe, we might perhaps think of the vital influence of remote monasteries that, as Sir Kenneth Clark famously claimed, enabled civilization to survive by the skin of its teeth during the dark ages. Or perhaps our minds would turn to the building of the great cathedrals of Europe or the gorgeous sacred art of the renaissance. Some might even think of the famous icons of Orthodox Russia, the sublime unity of the figures of Andrei Rublev’s Old Testament Trinity or the unutterable tenderness of the Vladimir Mother of God, cheek to cheek with her divine child. But we might wonder how many of us, when reading Tolstoy or Dostoevsky or Chekhov, would remember that the very Cyrillic letters those great literary giants wrote down on their paper are the Christian Church’s gift to the Slav peoples and the world? The Life of St Cyril relates that when Emperor Michael asked Cyril & Methodius to make that missionary journey to Moravia the letters of the Slavonic alphabet were revealed to them in answer to prayer. They set out on their mission and took with them a letter from Michael to Prince Rastislav, saying of their alphabet, ‘Receive this gift, which is more precious and greater than all silver and gold and precious stones and all magnificent wealth’. Surely here is a set of hagiographical superlatives that can be regarded as no exaggeration. The mission of Cyril and Methodius was not welcomed by the Frankish Archbishops of Salzburg and Passau, who did not take kindly to the idea of the Greek brothers disturbing, with their new-fangled Slav alphabet, the ecclesiastical life what they considered to be their own territory and jurisdiction. They held that God was properly to be worshipped in just three languages, Hebrew, Greek and Latin, after Pilate’s superscription on the Cross. Fortunately for Cyril and Methodius, for the Slav peoples then and ever since, and for the culture and civilization of Europe and the world, Pope Adrian II disagreed with them. The heresy of trilingualism was condemned. The Pope blessed the Slavonic books, which were laid upon the altar of the Basilica of St Mary Major and Cyril and Methodius celebrated the liturgy in Slavonic in the Church of St Peter and in other Roman churches. It was in that St Cyril died. He is buried in the Basilica of San Clemente, one of the most beautiful churches in the city. Meanwhile, Methodius was named Archbishop of Pannonia and returned to his mission among the Slavs. From those days, before the Great Schism that was to divide the Church, East from West, Cyril and Methodius stand as true paradigms of European Christian culture. They were people who were able to step beyond their own Byzantine cultural idiom to embrace and transform beyond all imagining another culture, that of the Slavs. The sheer brilliance of their learning, the depth of their faith and the geographical scope of their missionary activity and of their heritage is what led John Paul II in 1985 to name Cyril and Methodius co-patrons of Europe, along with St Benedict. It is also extraordinary to think that more than 1155 years ago these two saints so readily grasped what seems to us a very contemporary truth: the need for people to teach and hand on the faith in a comprehensible language. As Pope Benedict comments, ‘Cyril and Methodius are in fact a classic example of what today is meant by the term “inculturation”: every culture must integrate the message revealed into its own culture and express its saving truth in its own language.’ To this day, Old Church Slavonic is the liturgical language of all the Slav Churches of Eastern Europe. And the peoples of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia and the other Slav nations all regard the two brothers from Thessaloniki as the fathers of their literary culture. [3] Credit to Fr Tim Pike CMP, governor of St Stephen’s House theological college in Oxford, United Kingdom [1] The last general revision of the from 1969 celebrates February 14th as a “Memorial of Saints Cyril, monk, and Methodius, bishop.” In Europe, this day is celebrated as a Feast. [2] The Castle of Nitra is located on top of a hill where an old, Slavonic fortified settlement once stood. The first written reference to the set- tlement dates back to the times of the mission of SS. Cyril and Methodius (871) and it mentions a consecration of the ruler’s church in 828. In 880 the city became the center of the newly founded Nitra Bishopric. The city of Nitra hosts an annual Slovak national pilgrimage on July 5th to honor SS. Cyril and Methodius.
