OPENING GAMES

The Flyers are 25-19-8 in their season openers. They have won four in a row, all either on the road or in last year’s case, their neutral-site game in Prague vs. Chicago in which they were the home team. This is the first time the Flyers have opened the season at Wells Fargo Center since October of 2013 when they dropped a 3-1 decision to Toronto; they have not won in a season opener in the building since 2003, when they shut out Buffalo 2-0.

The Flyers and Penguins faced off here in their opening game of the last NHL season that started late, helping the NHL start the season on January 19, 2013 in a contest that Pittsburgh won 3-1. This is the eighth time the teams have opened a season against one another, with the others as follows:

1971-72 FLYERS 2 at Pittsburgh 3 L 1980-81 Pittsburgh 4 at FLYERS 7 W 1992-93 FLYERS 3 at Pittsburgh 3 T 1993-94 Pittsburgh 3 at FLYERS 4 W 2006-07 FLYERS 0 at Pittsburgh 4 L 2010-11 FLYERS 3 at Pittsburgh 2 W 2012-13 Pittsburgh 3 at FLYERS 1 L

The Flyers are 29-17-6 in their home opener.

The Flyers and Penguins have not played eight times in a season since 2007-08. They did so for three straight years, with the Flyers’ records as follows:

2005-06: 6-1-1 2006-07: 0-6-2 2007-08: 5-3-0

Prior to the arrival of Anaheim and Florida to the NHL in 1993 and the associated NHL realignment, the Flyers and Penguins routinely played near these numbers – they faced off eight times in 1981-82 and then seven times per season from 1982-83 through 1992-93. They also played 10 times in their first NHL season of 1967-68, including the first-ever game in the Spectrum, and played eight times each in 1968-69 and 1969-70.

Jake Voracek scored a power play goal with 29 seconds left in a sluggish first period that featured seven total shots, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead at the intermission. Pittsburgh scored the game’s next three tallies, picking up one from Evgeni Malkin 3:55 into the second, and then getting two power play goals in the span of six minutes – one from Bryan Rust and the other from Kris Letang – to take the two-goal lead with 8:57 left in the second. NOTES OF THE NIGHT

Claude Giroux enters his ninth season as Flyers captain. He has served in the role for 604 games, which is six short of the franchise high of 610 games served by Bobby Clarke. Giroux has appeared in 604 of a possible 609 games since taking over the captaincy in January of 2013 at the start of the shortened 2012-13 season; since that time, he is fourth in the league in points (572) and third in assists (393), and leads the league in power play points (232) while sitting second in power play assists (176). His average TOI of 20:19 per game ranks seventh among NHL forwards during that time, and his faceoff total (11824) and faceoff percentage (56.4, min. 6000 faceoffs) both rank fifth in the league during the stretch.

The Flyers enter the season anticipating contributions from two key forwards who are making comebacks from significant medical hurdles last season. Oskar Lindblom has continued his recovery from a diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma in December of 2019. The treatment and recovery was forecast to sideline him the entire season with the possibility of a return at 2020 training camp, but the COVID-19 stoppage and subsequent delay in the 2020 Playoffs allowed him to recover in time to join the Flyers in the Toronto playoff bubble, where he made his return to the ice in Game 6 of the Second Round series vs. the .

The Flyers’ 2020-21 captaincy structure will see Sean Couturier serve as an alternate captain for all games, Ivan Provorov for home games, and Kevin Hayes and Jake Voracek in a rotating fashion for road games. Tonight will mark the first game of his NHL career that Provorov has worn a letter. He has not missed a game in his four NHL seasons, playing all 315 games the Flyers have played since making his debut at the start of the 2016-17 season. Giroux has also played all 315 games the team has played in that timeframe.

Nolan Patrick is poised to return to the ice for the first time since April 2, 2019 at Dallas. He missed the entire 2019-20 season while battling a migraine disorder. Patrick was the second overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and posted consecutive seasons of 30 and 31 points in his first two NHL campaigns.

Tonight’s game marks the first time since the 2013-14 season that the Flyers are fielding an opening-night lineup that doesn’t involve a player making his NHL debut. Of the 23-man playoff roster, only defenseman Erik Gustafsson is new to the organization.

The Flyers’ win over Montreal in the First Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs marked the end of seven consecutive seasons without a playoff series victory, the longest such stretch in franchise history. The previous longest drought was five years, done twice – the first five years of the team’s existence from 1968-72, and during five consecutive missed playoff seasons from 1990-94. On the first occasion, the Flyers snapped the drought with their first playoff series win in 1973, and the following season went on to win the first of their two consecutive Stanley Cups.

Philadelphia Flyers: Head Coach and Player Bios Head Coach: Alain Vigneault Alain Vigneault was named the 21st head coach in Flyers history on April 15, 2019. Vigneault led the Flyers to one of the NHL’s best turnarounds in 2019-20. At the time of the NHL’s pause of the season due to COVID-19, the Flyers had played 69 games and were 41-21-7 for 89 points, good for the sixth-best record in the league and fourth-best in the Eastern Conference. Vigneault was the runner-up in voting for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year for his work in engineering the turnaround.

Vigneault enters the 2020-21 season with 1,285 games of experience as an NHL head coach over parts of 17 seasons. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, he served as the head coach of the New York Rangers for five seasons (2013-18), the for seven seasons (2006-13) and the Montreal Canadiens for parts of four seasons (1997-2000). He also served as the head coach for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, guiding the squad to a silver medal.

TEAM NOTES:

BEASTS OF THE EAST The 2020-21 season will look a little different than normal, as Pittsburgh will compete the East Division along with the , , New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and . The team’s 56-game schedule will also feature eight games against each divisional opponent (four at home and four on the road).

There’s no debating that the East division will be one of, if not the most competitive division in the NHL this season, as 11 of the last 13 Eastern Conference Champions dating back to 2007-08 are housed in the East Division (Pittsburgh, 4; Boston, 3; New Jersey, 1; NY Rangers 1; Philadelphia, 1; Washington, 1) with the lone exception being Tampa Bay’s Stanley Cup Final appearances in 2015 and 2020.

The division also features three of the top-five active point leaders (Alex Ovechkin, 1,278 points - 2nd; Sidney Crosby, 1,263 points - 3rd; Evgeni Malkin, 1,076 points - 5th) as well as three of the top-four active points-per-game leaders (Crosby, 1.28 - 2nd; Malkin, 1.19 - 3rd; Ovechkin, 1.11 - 4th).

GUENTZ-GOAL Tonight’s season opener marks the first regular-season action for Jake Guentzel since his season-ending shoulder surgery. In his last regular season game on Dec. 30, 2019 versus Ottawa, Guentzel finished with three points (1G-2A), including his 20th goal of the season that doubled as his 200th NHL point. The NHL All-Star enters this season two goals shy of 100 in his career, as he’s looking to become the 17th player in team history, and ninth fastest, to record their first 100 NHL goals with Pittsburgh:

When he reaches this milestone, Guentzel will become the sixth member of the 2013 draft class, and only one outside of the top-10, to score 100 goals.

MALKIN CLOSING IN ON 66 AND 68 Evgeni Malkin enters the 2020-21 campaign looking to ascend Pittsburgh’s all-time ranks. The last time the Penguins saw regular-season game action on March 10, 2020 in New Jersey, Malkin netted the game-winning goal in a 5-2 win, moving him within one of tying Mario Lemieux for second place on the team’s all-time game-winning goals list:

Malkin also sits three points shy of tying Jaromir Jagr for the third-most points in franchise history:

THE WIZARD OF CROS Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has done some of his best work against the Philadelphia Flyers throughout his career. In 70 career games, Crosby has 43 goals, 62 assists and 105 points. His 43 goals are his most against any one team, while his 1.50 points-per-game average is tied for his second- highest average against any opponent. No active player has more points against Philadelphia than Crosby:

Only three players in NHL history have recorded more points against the Flyers than Crosby’s 105 – Mario Lemieux (124), Jaromir Jagr (120) and Bryan Trottier (117).

In his last 11 games against the Flyers, Crosby has 21 points (7G-14A) which includes points in nine of those 11 games.

ALL-STAR NETMINDER Goaltender Tristan Jarry enters this season looking to build off of his 2019-20 All-Star campaign. The 25-year old Jarry signed a three-year, 10.5 million dollar contract extension this offseason after setting career highs across the board in games played (33), wins (20), goals-against average (2.43), save percentage (.921) and shutouts (3) in 2019-20. Jarry's goals-against average (9th) and save percentage (8th) also both ranked in the top-10 in the NHL.

Jarry enters this season one shutout shy of tying Jean-Sebastien Aubin, Denis Herron and Ken Wregget for sixth place on the team’s all-time shutout list.

MATHESON AND RODRIGUES REACH MILESTONES Tonight, newly acquired defenseman Mike Matheson and recently re-acquired forward Evan Rodrigues are set to appear in their 300th and 200th NHL games, respectively.

Matheson, who spent the first 299 games of his career with the , is making his Penguins debut after being acquired this offseason along with Colton Sceviour in exchange for Patric Hornqvist. The 26-year old defenseman is coming off of his third-straight 20-point campaign. His 91 career points (33G-58A) are third-most among all Penguins defensemen behind Kris Letang (537) and Cody Ceci (126).

Rodrigues returns to the Penguins after a whirlwind 2019-20 campaign where he started the season with Buffalo, was then traded to Pittsburgh where he scored one goal in seven games, and was then traded in the offseason to Toronto as part of the deal that brought Kasperi Kapanen to Pittsburgh, before re-signing with the team during the free agency period.

FIRST-ROUND FRENZY The Penguins open the 2020-21 season with four members of the 2012 NHL Draft class on their roster, three of which were selected in the first round:

Player Round Pick # Cody Ceci 1 15 Mark Jankowski 1 21 Mike Matheson 1 23 Teddy Blueger 2 52

In total, the Penguins have had seven members of the first round of the 2012 draft class suit up in a Pittsburgh sweater at some point (also Alex Galchenyuk, Derrick Pouliot, Olli Maatta and Tanner Pearson).
