The ReThinking Animals Summit 2019 The Unsustainable cost of our treatment of other species

New york city September 14-15, 2019 2019 partners T h am n i n d u e t i k a i n l g s THINKING ANIMALS UNITED AND THE RETHINKING ANIMALS SUMMIT 2019

In 2012 when we started our Exploring Animals Minds series of public lectures, the idea that animals were capable of thinking, planning, creating and being emotional was relatively new—even among scientists. Now most people accept that many other animals are sentient, with a full range of emotional feelings, self-awareness, cognitive and behavioral capabilities that rival ours in some instances. Over a period of three and a half years we held 20 public lectures featuring renowned scientists in the fields of cognition, ethology, comparative psychology, communications, biology, evolutionary behavior, and neuroscience to enlighten people about the intelligence of animals. We have now expanded our vision to include bringing issues of caring for, protecting and conserving animals to the public’s attention, as well as an awareness of what this responsibility means for the planet. We are also working to ensure that the impacts and importance of other species is acknowledged and incorporated in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals-the 17 goals the UN created to direct its work for the next 13 years. Although we have already succeeded in incorporating language acknowledging the importance of animals into documents pertaining to the mitigation of poverty and environmental destruction that will be distributed to all 193 Member States and posted on the UN website, we are looking at new public and civic arenas and ways of inclusively reaching out to all stakeholders to get our message to ever wider audiences. We are excited by what the future holds for us as an organization and as a species, for other animals and the planet. We will increasingly need to rely on our innate ingenuity if we are to save the planet. So along with bringing your attention to the critical threats we face from our treatment of other species, our Summit focuses on solutions and exciting innovations that so often arise in response to global crises, many of which are directly related to our commod- itization of other species. New disruptive technological advances and innovative businesses based on them are already reshaping the landscape of the future economy. Be it new building materials, cultured foods, new ways to collect, analyze and visualize complex information, or individual action – all stand as beacons of positive change. Many entrepreneurs, individuals, and businesses are already defning a new future for humans and other animals.

The goal of Thinking Animals United has always been to better understand animals and inspire a unifed commitment to their protection and well-being. Our Pledge: To coexist with all sentient beings, treat them with respect, and protect them from all human generated threats to their survival and well-being. It’s a future worth fghting for. An Introduction to the International Fund for ( IFAW) Fifty years ago, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) took on one problem threatening one species in one part of the world. With the 1983 ban on whitecoat Harp seal products, more than 1 million seal pups were saved. Since then we have taken on problems threatening more species, including our own, in over 40 countries across the globe. Pioneering first-ever successes in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of animals back into the wild into safe spaces, we are now rescuing more animals and securing more habitats than at any other point in time. At IFAW, our history is one of expanding vision. As the world evolves, so do we. We follow a set of key principles that guide our work, namely that animals should be recognized as sentient beings with intrinsic value; that policy be based on sound science and the ethical treatment of animals; and that conservation decisions should be guided by both ecological and biological sustainability. And we do this because we know that individual animals matter. They are key to in their habitats and they can mean the difference between losing or saving an entire species. By rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing animals, one by one— by protecting their habitats, and helping them flourish—we can save a species. At IFAW, we believe our work transcends all borders. This is not just a statement, but an observation of the power of ordinary people to make a difference wherever they live. As an organization, we have assembled some of the most gifted experts in the areas of biology, cybercrime, ecology, forensic science, forestry, oceanography, and zoology. Activists and negotiators. Rescue workers and consensus-builders. People who think big and act boldly. Our work takes us across diverse seascapes and landscapes across the globe. From protecting critical elephant habitats across Africa, to developing alternative fishing gear that reduces the threat of deadly marine mammal entanglements, to working with tourism companies to develop sustainable whale watching as an alternative to commercial , to helping local com- munities and their animals in crises through our disaster response team. Our work has even taken us into the realm of cyberspace as we helped launch the first-ever Coalition to End Trafficking Online. The global role that IFAW plays both domestically and abroad allows us to recognize the multi-faceted dimensions of animal welfare and conservation. Thus, we work hard to implement innovative projects that reinforces ways to work both with and within the local communities themselves. One of the most important lessons we have learned is that there is a human side to animal welfare. When people take better care of themselves, they often take better care of the animals around them. This inspires our work as well as the partnerships we undertake to ensure that communities are engaged in conservation. For we know we cannot do it alone. COMPASSION IN WORLD FARMING Compassion in World Farming is the leading international organisation working to end factory farming, the greatest cause of animal cruelty on the planet and a major cause of wildlife declines. The organisation is behind some of the greatest achievements for farm animals of the past decades, including EU bans on cage systems and legal recognition of animals as sentient beings, capable of pain, suffering and joy. Compassion investigates and exposes the true costs of factory farming, calling to account those with the power to change our food and farming systems. By working in partnership with inspirational supporters, progressive policy makers and visionary companies, we are mobilising a movement for far-reaching change.Over the last decade, Compassion’s pioneering engagement work with over 1,000 food companies worldwide has led to real improvements in the lives of over two billion farm animals every year. Compassion seeks to encourage and enable more people to stand with us and create a better world for animals, people and the planet. We are proud of our many victories for farm animals. Since 2012, our Better Chicken Initiative has advocated for the use of healthier, slower-growing breeds—and better living conditions that offer more space, natural light, and enrichment. Thanks to the passion and generosity of our supporters, over 60 major food businesses have committed to better chicken.

Holding companies to account for their commitments to improve animal welfare is an important aspect of our work. We work in partnership on the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare, which plays a key role in keeping farm animal welfare on the corporate agenda: the latest report featured assessments of 150 companies across 23 countries. Our EggTrack publications report on the progress companies are making towards ending the use of cages for laying hens.

The current rate of growth in the market for cheap meat and dairy is unsustainable, both in terms of animal welfare and the environment. Compassion is at the heart of a new breed of ‘animal welfare environmentalists’ regarding animal welfare as a central component in the overall battle to save the planet. We are seeking a new global agreement at UN level for an end to factory farming and a move to humane and regenerative food systems. In the meantime initiatives such as our #EatPlantsForAChange encourage a more planet and animal friendly diet.
