St. James Catholic Church Rectory Staff On The Way

RECTORY OFFICE 905 Park Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22046 The Final Judgment Phone: 703-532-8815; Fax: 703-533-7644 Today’s celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King [email protected] is the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Next Sunday we enter into Advent and begin the annual meditation on the mysteries Jean Gliot, Pastor’s Assistant; Office Manager our Lord’s life: his birth, baptism, preaching, transfiguration, [email protected] passion, resurrection, and ascension. Child protection and safety coordinator With the end of the liturgical year also comes a consideration of the end of all things and the second coming Ginny Beauchamp, Records Manager of Christ. He came once in humility, as Savior. He will come [email protected] again in glory, as Judge. Today’s feast and Gospel both Sacramental records, baptisms, registrations, address changes emphasize the power he has as King and Judge of all. They and room reservations touch on what we profess every week in the Creed: He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead. And Judy Burke, Receptionist since we “know neither the day nor the hour” (Mt 25:13) we [email protected] must be vigilant for his return. But what is the purpose of this final judgment of the Volunteer Coordinators [email protected] King? It is, first of all, a vindication. Justice is never complete Rich Blickendorfer, Business Manager in this world. This side of heaven, things will never be made [email protected] whole. Something is always lacking. Indeed, our deep desire for justice and the knowledge that we cannot find it fully here Kara Rider, Accounting Specialist on earth already hint at a final judgement when all will be set [email protected] right. Christ’s coming in glory will vindicate all who have Kathleen Anderson, Director of Development waited in hope for him, all who have been denied justice in [email protected] this world, all who have suffered for their faith in him. At the same time, justice will be done to those who have rejected, Duane Hyland, Communications Specialist denied, or neglected him. [email protected] This is all very personal. Human judges have to proceed according to external evidence and human laws. From that Anne Rohall-Andrade, St. James Disability they discern the reality: guilt or innocence. Christ is different. Inclusion Committee Liaison He is both the Judge and the standard of judgment. He judges [email protected] how we stand in relation to him, how we have come to be 202-841-3489 like him. His very coming reveals the secrets of every heart. “Then will the conduct of each one and the secrets of hearts Music Ministry be brought to light. Then will the culpable unbelief that Don Carolina, Director counted the offer of God's grace as nothing be [email protected] condemned” (CCC 678). Who we have determined ourselves to be over the course Youth Ministry of our lives will be revealed in an instant. How much we Fr. In the revelation of all his works, we will see the full extent of how his mercy has worked throughout the centuries. Stewardship The Gift of Time, Talent, Treasure

November 21/22 - The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)

This week’s second collection is for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. CCHD is the domestic anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, working to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ "... to bring good news to the poor ... release to captives ... sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free," (Luke 4:18). CCHD works to break the cycle of poverty by helping low-income people participate in decisions that affect their lives, families and communities. CCHD offers a hand up, not a hand out. CCHD provides the Catholic faithful with concrete opportunities to live out the love of God and neighbor in ways that express our baptismal call. CCHD’s work is made possible by the generosity of American Catholics who give each year to this annual parish collection. Thank you for your kindness and support to those in need.

Donations Needed to Support St. Lucy Diocesan Warehouse

The Catholic Charities Diocesan St. Lucy Warehouse is in desperate need for food donations. Donor fatigue has set in with recent collections down 28% and demand for food up 90% from this time last year. The donated food supports multiple food pantries and lunch packs for children.

The St. Lucy truck came to our parish in May and will return in the Spring. In the meantime, due to the serious lack of food available to program participants, please consider making food donations online using the Amazon Gift Wish List Link: ccda.net/SLPAmazonWishList. The food will be sent directly to the warehouse and St. James parish will be recognized for any online donations.

The social outreach committee endorses this easy way to donate food, and we thank you for your generosity. Please Help Children in Zambia By Indulging Your Sweet Tooth

Parishioners at St. John the Beloved Catholic Church in McLean, VA, have teamed up with the St. Peter Claver Society to help orphans in Zambia, who lost their parents to the AIDS virus, by selling delicious See's Candy. Please help the St. Peter Claver Society by purchasing some candy—your move to satisfy your sweet tooth will make a difference in these children's lives. St. James’ Garden Grows

If you've been by the St. James House of Ministries lately, at 913 Park Avenue, you might have noticed a new addition to the field behind the house, a vegetable garden. The garden, planted back in , was the idea of parishioner Zoey Maraist. "It had been on my heart for a long time to form a care ministry at St. James, and, after a few talks with Father Oetjen to discuss what form that ministry might take, we decided to plant a garden." "Growing food that we could then donate to those in need spoke strongly to me."

Over 17 parishioners helped with the garden throughout the spring and summer months, watering, weeding, and harvesting the produce. "Weeding is an overwhelming task, and we had lots of weeds. It's entirely possible that, in the end, the weeds won," Zoey said wryly. It is a bit doubtful that the weeds won, given the bounteous produce that the garden plot produced—beans, peppers of every variety, some squash, and tomatoes. Through their hard work and loving care of the garden, the volunteers donated food to every St. James First Friday Food Distribution from through .

"It has been gratifying for me to be involved in this project," said Zoey, "to take a plot of land and turn it into food for those who are in need has been a great experience." Zoey went on to say that "gardening helps you quickly understand what you don't know, and you end up spending a lot of time filling in those knowledge gaps with your efforts, and the help of others." She stressed, "you don't have to be an expert to garden, but it is quite helpful to have those who are around you." Two parishioners that have been extremely helpful with the effort "have been Joe Knecht and Karen Bushaw-Newton."

2021 will see an expanded garden, "about double the size," according to Zoey. Among the plans are raised beds for the garden, allowing more food to be grown. A young man is building the beds as part of his Boy Scout project. They should be "ready by " or April if all goes well." As for what's on the planning, er, planting books for next year - "cabbage, cucumbers, more varieties of squash, and, perhaps, strawberries." "We also plan to grow more flowers next season, as they are used to decorate both the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mother on the Park Avenue side of the Church.”

If you want to get involved with the garden project, it's never too late! While everything got off to a good start this year, the gardeners need your help to keep the food growing. "Parishioners, and other interested folks, can help through joining in the labor or by donating seeds, soil, and plants. "Help with weeding and watering is especially needed throughout the growing season," noted Zoey. "The garden is an especially good project for students who need to perform service hours." “...the earth is an "I especially want to thank Father Oejten and Father Scalia for their environment to be encouragement and support throughout this project," said Zoey while safeguarded, a garden to finishing up our interview. "They allowed us to take our vision and make be cultivated.” it a reality, and for that, we are grateful." Pope Francis
