The theme for the 2004-05 season will be youth as this Torero team has no seniors on its roster. The freshman class will make an impact on the floor right away. Still, with three returning players who were in the starting lineup last year and six returners who saw significant playing time throughout the season, there is plenty of experience to balance out the youth. Certainly, this year will be full of excitement. The Toreros will be challenged to replace seniors Melissa Padgett and Marta Menuez, a First Team All-WCC performer, who carried much of the load for the Toreros last season. Ready to meet that challenge are four returning Junior point guard Polly Dong dished out juniors: Polly Dong, Brandi Collato, Lindsay 4.4 assists per game last season. Helvey, and Tiara Harris. This crew of juniors has combined to start seventy games in their careers. Each of them has been a major player for two years and is ready and willing to step up to the plate. Dong has established herself as one of the leading playmakers in the West Coast Confer ence. Helvey and Collato both rank among the top of the WCC in three-point shooting and Helvey was the team's second leading scorer behind Menuez's 15.3 points per game. Harris was a WCC All-Freshman team nominee and will be a tremendous weapon for the Toreros with her speed and slashing ability. These players will be placed in leadership roles right away and will be the backbone of the Torero team. The Toreros also have two sopho mores whose talents will be show cased this season. Ashley Voisinet, despite missing ten games due to a knee injury, was a major contributor in her freshman campaign. Now that she is healthy, Ashley's athleticism San Di-ego enjoyed some impressive wins at home last season, defeating Georgetown, Oral Roberts and Nevada. and defensive ability will be a major boost to USD's perimeter game. Sabine Loewe started one game at center, played key minutes at the post off the bench, and re ceived valuable experience in practice competing with Menuez and Padgett. The lone returning post player, Loewe will showcase her versatility at the high and low post this season. Her experience will be counted on to lead the young Torero post players. The four incoming freshmen are considered to be the best recruiting class to ever sign at USD . They are led by 6'5" Amber Sprague who was a High School All-America selection by Street and Smith, Nike, and the Women's Basketball Coaches Asso ciation. She is an inside-outside scorer who has all the tools to be one of the best players in USD history. 5'9" point guard Amanda Rego will be a presence on the court right away with her ball handling and passing abilities. Rego and Sprague were high school teammates at Misson Bay High School in San Diego and have great chemistry. Michelle Augustavo, a 6'0" guard, is a very consistent outside shooter with great court vision. Junior shooting guard Brandi Collato .finished her Her size and strength will create match up prob high school career ranked second in State his tory behind Cheryl Miller with a total of3,3 25 points. lems for opponents. Alice Russell is a 6'2" post player with great hands, a soft touch, and three-point range. These freshmen will make an immedi ate impact as they will add depth and competitiveness to every practice and game. The non-conference schedule features road games against Pac-10 foe Arizona State, Big West members Long Beach State and UC Riverside, Mountain West opponent Air Force, and two tough challenges at the University of New Mexico's Thanksgiving Tournament. The Toreros non-conference home schedule highlights games against cross- town rival San Diego State, ACC powerhouse Clemson, and Pac-10 rival USC. USD hosts the annual Surf and Slam Classic Dec. 28-30, featuring several top programs in Marquette, Vermont, and SEC power Mississippi. The West Coast Conference race is as wide open as ever, and the Toreros should be a key contender for the title. Junior Tiara Harris talks to the m edia after a wee Tournament game. KATHYMARPE 25th year Head Coach

Entering her 32nd year as a head coach and her 25th season at the helm of the University of San Diego women's basketball program, Kathy Marpe's name is synonymous with the success of the USD Toreros. Marpe's coaching career began in Minnesota at Spring Lake Park High School in 1971 where she not only coached basketball, but also the volleyball and softball teams. In the combined three sports, the teams totaled an impressive 53-1 record. Two years later, Marpe was coaching in "The Pit" at the University of New Mexico where the Lobos accumulated a 51-30 record in her final three seasons. She led the Lobos to consecutive finishes in the Associated Press Top 20 and made six AIAW Regional appearances in seven years. In addition, attendance records were attained with the women drawing over 1,000 a game with crowds reaching 2,000-3,000 - attendance figures that were unheard of in the 70's. In 1980, Marpe brought her coaching exper tise to USD. Over the years, she has witnessed many changes in the game of women's bas ketball including the skills and athleticism of today's student athletes. Coach Marpe's ability to embrace and capitalize on the changes in the athletic environment has resulted in many milestones that aspiring coaches admire including 372 career coaching victories, 112 West Coast Conference wins, two WCC coach of the year awards, two conference tournament championships and two NCAA Tourna ment teams. In addition under Marpe's tutelage, six Toreros, Susie Erpelding, Jessica Gray, Erin Malich, Chris Enger, Deb Weinreis and Marta Menuez have become professional basketball players. Coach Marpe values the academic success and community in volvement of her players. Her encouragement and support of her players are apparent as the Toreros teams have included 13 First Team All-West Coast Conference players, and 31 players have been honored as WCC Scholar Athletes. Coach Marpe states, "It is very important to remember who you are and where you come from, and also to give back to the people around you who are not so fortunate. " Marpe has successfully guided the USD Toreros to two NCAA Tournament bids. In 1993, the USD team earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament by bouncing back from a 4-10 WCC record in 1992 to finish 8-6 and second in the conference stand ings. The second trip in 2000 came after the Toreros beat number the one seeded Pepperdine Waves 68-51. On February 3, 2001, Marpe became the fourth coach in WCC history to reach 100 conference victories. She now owns 112 WCC wins, which ranks her third all-time for WCC career coaching victories. Marpe's 372 overall career wins places her in an elite class of about 60 NCAA coaches who have won over 300 career games. As "dean" of WCC coaches, Marpe was honored as Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1998. The 1998 honor came as a result of leading the Toreros to one of the largest single-season turnarounds in WCC history - an improvement of eight games. Continuing to embrace change in the 2004-05 season, Marpe hopes to duplicate the Torero success of the past.

KATHY MARPE HAS TWICE BEEN HONORED AS THE WEST COAST CONFERENCE COACH OF THE YEAR AND RANKS 3RD ALL-TIME IN wee COACHING VICTORIES.

The 2003-04 San Diego women's basketball team bid a fond farewell to two seniors who played a major role in building USD's program and welcomed an infusion of young talent who proved they will carry on the Toreros' tradition of athletic excellence. The combination of guidance and strength from the returning players and eagerness and enthusiasm from the young players resulted in a thrilling season-ending run in the WCC Tournament. The non-conference season saw USD crush Nevada 96-74 in 'Jt1JIIJ18J the Torero home opener and rally back from a 14 point deficit to defeat cross-town rival San Diego State 65-60 at Cox Arena. USD celebrated Christmas with three late-December wins. The Toreros defeated UOP and Oral Roberts then knocked off a strong George town team to advance to the championship of the San Diego Surf 31 and Slam Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD entered the West Coast Conference Tournament as the #8 seed, pitting them against #5 seed St. Mary's College in the first round. The Toreros moved on in the tournament with a thrilling 87- 81 double overtime victory against the Gaels in which three Toreros Melissa Padgett (2 000-04) provided the Toreros with scored over 20 points (Helvey 28 , Harris 24, Menuez 21). The excellent defense as a senior last season. 2003-04 season closed with a narrow loss against Portland in the second round of the WCC Tournament. San Diego senior, Marta Menuez, capped off her career with the Toreros by firmly placing herself amongst USD's all-time greatest players. She became the 8th player in USD history to surpass 1,000 points in the game against Loyola Marymount on January 15, 2004; and ended her career as the 2nd leading scorer in USD history with 1,233 points. Menuez reached another milestone when she cleared her 600th rebound in the double over time win over St. Mary's becoming only the 5th player in USD history to do so. She finished her career with 614 rebounds, ranking her 5th on the all-time rebound list. With an average of 15.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, Menuez was named to the All-WCC First Team and received WCC Player of the Week accolades for the week of November 23 . Senior forward Melissa Padgett established herself as one of San Diego's greatest defensive players as her Torero career came to a close. In the To reros' win over Georgetown, Melissa held All-America forward and current WNBA player Rebekkah Brunson to 10 points on 5-13 shooting. She was one of only three Toreros who started all 29 games averaging 31 .8 minutes per game. Padgett did almost everything for the Toreros. She led the team in blocks with 20 and was 2nd in steals, assists, and rebounds. She ended the season ranked among the conference leaders in each of those categories. Lindsay Helvey poured in a career-high 28 points in USD's postseason win over the Gaels. Sophomore point guard, Polly Dong, ranked 2nd in the WCC in assists and by season's end had dished out 129 assists, placing her 3rd on USD's all-time single season list. After only 2 seasons, Polly is already 8th on the all-time career assist list with 21 7. Dong started in all 29 games for the Toreros and averaged 28 minutes per game. She ranked 1st on the team in steals with 52 (6th in the WCC) and led the Toreros defense by taking the most charges (23) on the team.Sophomore guard Lindsay Helvey turned in an excellent '03-04 season, rebounding from a rookie campaign that saw her sidelined by injury for much of the year. Helvey appeared in all 29 contests and ended her season 2nd in the WCC in both 3 pointers made and 3 point percentage. She supplied USD with consistent shooting from the perimeter, making 42% of her shots from behind the arc. Helvey shot a perfect 18-18 from the free throw line in conference play. She came off the bench to score in double digits ten times, including a career-high 28 points to lead the Toreros to their thrilling 87-81 double overtime victory over St. Mary's in round one of the WCC Tournament. Sophomore guard, Tiara Harris, was a major player for the Toreros, giving them tremendous speed in transition. She was an integral part in USD's first round victory in the WCC Tournament when she scored a career-high 24 points. Harris was 2nd on the team in assists with 64 and averaged 6.9 points per game. Forward Jamie Corwin, who also started in all 29 games, ended the season shooting 41 % from the field. She ranked 2nd on the Toreros in both steals (27) and blocks (11) and averaged 7.0 points per game. Corwin scored in double digits nine times throughout the season, including a career-high 19 points against Pacific and a game-high 15 points against Georgia Southern. Junior guard, Brandi Collato, returned to the Toreros after sitting out the 2002-03 season as a medical redshirt. She proved to be an Marta Menuez (2000-04) finished an excellent collegiate career excellent outside shooter for the Toreros, scoring in double digits by bei,ng named an All- WCC First Team player at seasons end seven times throughout the season and reaching a career-high 18 points twice. Brandi ended the season with the 4th highest 3 point shooting percentage in the WCC. San Diego also had strong contributions from their freshmen who were immediate assets for the Toreros. Ashley Voisinet enjoyed significant playing time averaging 8.9 minutes in 19 games and became the Toreros ' defensive stopper at the guard position. Katie Watson played in 23 games as a forward and shot 40% from the field. Sabine Loewe averaged 10 minutes per game in 26 games at the center position. She finished a strong rookie season shooting 47% from the field and went 18-24 (.750) from the free throw line. Sabine recorded a career high 11 points against USF. The '03-'04 season saw many young Toreros get major game experience as 10 of the 12 players on the roster were freshmen and sophomores. The experience those young players gained from playing significant minutes in every game and the lessons learned from the senior leaders, Menuez and Padgett, will be a huge factor in the Toreros ' success this year.
