Jane Gilpin '87 Karen Skemp ' 87 r San mego Gears Up For ' 2004-05 Season The theme for the 2004-05 season will be youth as this Torero team has no seniors on its roster. The freshman class will make an impact on the floor right away. Still, with three returning players who were in the starting lineup last year and six returners who saw significant playing time throughout the season, there is plenty of experience to balance out the youth. Certainly, this year will be full of excitement. The Toreros will be challenged to replace seniors Melissa Padgett and Marta Menuez, a First Team All-WCC performer, who carried much of the load for the Toreros last season. Ready to meet that challenge are four returning Junior point guard Polly Dong dished out juniors: Polly Dong, Brandi Collato, Lindsay 4.4 assists per game last season. Helvey, and Tiara Harris. This crew of juniors has combined to start seventy games in their careers. Each of them has been a major player for two years and is ready and willing to step up to the plate. Dong has established herself as one of the leading playmakers in the West Coast Confer ence. Helvey and Collato both rank among the top of the WCC in three-point shooting and Helvey was the team's second leading scorer behind Menuez's 15.3 points per game. Harris was a WCC All-Freshman team nominee and will be a tremendous weapon for the Toreros with her speed and slashing ability. These players will be placed in leadership roles right away and will be the backbone of the Torero team. The Toreros also have two sopho mores whose talents will be show cased this season. Ashley Voisinet, despite missing ten games due to a knee injury, was a major contributor in her freshman campaign. Now that she is healthy, Ashley's athleticism San Di-ego enjoyed some impressive wins at home last season, defeating Georgetown, Oral Roberts and Nevada. and defensive ability will be a major boost to USD's perimeter game. Sabine Loewe started one game at center, played key minutes at the post off the bench, and re ceived valuable experience in practice competing with Menuez and Padgett. The lone returning post player, Loewe will showcase her versatility at the high and low post this season. Her experience will be counted on to lead the young Torero post players. The four incoming freshmen are considered to be the best recruiting class to ever sign at USD . They are led by 6'5" Amber Sprague who was a High School All-America selection by Street and Smith, Nike, and the Women's Basketball Coaches Asso ciation. She is an inside-outside scorer who has all the tools to be one of the best players in USD history. 5'9" point guard Amanda Rego will be a presence on the court right away with her ball handling and passing abilities. Rego and Sprague were high school teammates at Misson Bay High School in San Diego and have great chemistry. Michelle Augustavo, a 6'0" guard, is a very consistent outside shooter with great court vision. Alice Russell is a 6'2" post player with great hands, a soft touch, and three-point range. Investments to expand the sports related venues for the greater Kanawha Valley as well as the state of West Virginia and surrounding states will have a two-fold benefit. Local residents will have access to first-rate venues for competition and exercise. Secondly, these venues can accommodate regional events that will attract visitors to Charleston bringing high caliber teams and their wallets. Well designed sports facilities along with strong marketing will benefit local athletes, businesses, and communities. This study provides the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) with an objective analysis and strategic advice in order to pursue alternatives related to expanding sporting events with a particular emphasis on youth participation.

Back Posted: July 12. 2007 12:00AM Bond at the ball field West Coast college teammates reunited in Utica UTICA — When college baseball players graduate, they often hope to play again with former teammates in the majors some day. Two teammates at Cal State Northridge probably never thought they would be playing together again in Utica, nearly 2,750 miles from their college home. "It's really cool getting to play with Paul (Wilson) on my team again," said Alex Bardeguez, a utility player for the Oneida Barge Bucs of the New York State League. "He's a great player." Bardeguez were teammates on the 2006 Cal State Northridge Matadors. It was Wilson's senior season and Bardeguez's junior season. While both players are now playing in the NYSL, they have taken very different paths in their playing career. Bardeguez, a Long Island native, began his college career at Villanova University, but transferred to Northridge after his junior season. He said he made the move because Northridge, in the Big West Conference, had more quality baseball than the Big East. Coaches have liked Bardeguez's skills as a utility player, as he has played first, second and third base as well as both corner outfield positions. His skills aren't limited to the baseball diamond. He was on both the Big East and Big West All-Academic teams while earning a degree in marketing.
