Album Report -de KAL RUDMAN PUBLISHER T H E F RIDA Y M O R NI N G Q U A R T E R B AC K ' A PROGRAMMING GUIDE -- EXECUTIVE MEWS • 1930 EAST MARLTON PIKE, F36 • CHERRY HILL, NEW JERSEY 08003 • (609) 424-9114 FMQB ALBUM REPORT February 18, 1983 BILL HARD, Editor Hard Choice INXS, "SHABOOH SHOOBAH", ATCO Seems we're on a roll with exclusive Front Page picks lately--U2, Berlin, Jon Butcher, Thompson Twins, After The Fire, Thomas Dolby--and now INXS. We Front Paged the 12" in our February 4th issue, and as predicted last week--big time radio response. 37 stations in all and #1 Most Added in the Level I category with 12. With first week ravesfron , Leo, Belle Nolan, Tom Starr, Tim Smith, Ron Diaz, Ron Nenni, Steve Feinstein, Chuck Holloway, Jeff Murphy and more, we're expecting INXS to be huge. When you get the Lp later this week, also check out "Soul Mistake" and "Don't Change". Easy Choice STYX, "KILROY WAS HERE", A&M Forget that they're coming off of four consecutive triple platinum Lp's -- these days programmers evaluate even the automatics on a song by song basis, and that's why "Kilroy" will be one of the • year's biggest. It's a great package, with a workable concept, and remarkably fresh sound considering their years of heavy exposure. "Cold War" is the FMQB fave, "Heavy Metal Poisoning" and "Double Life" are also strong. Chain Reaction JON BUTCHER AXIS, POLYDOR You've seen two Front Page shots from us. Now radio jumps in with both feet. #1 Most Added with 36, including 11 majors. As expected Beantown believers Rob Lipshutz (WAAF) and Paul Lemieux (WCOZ) are testifying but we're especially pleased with quick adds and enthusiasm on heavies KZOK, KSHE, WYNF, KLOS, WMMR, KLOL, KBPI, KSRR, KTXQ, WAPP, and KGB-FM...KSJO's Nikki Stevens sums it up, "Head rush record of the week. Side one kicked my ass clear to Boston"..."Life" leads, "Words" follows, "New Man" is the sleeper track to watch. Strong start. ULTRAVOX, "QUARTET", CHRYSALIS We think "Reap The Wild Wind" is beautifully positioned. It's melodic enough to kill and crush multi- format and their progressive credentials are impeccable...#2 Most Added with 21 to go with last week's 25. With a chart debut in the 40+ range a definite next week. DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS, POLYDOR 20 adds (including WPLJ, WMMS, WAPP, WSHE, WYVF, and KAZY) brings us to a total of 49 FMQB stations so far this year. As we've been hammering in Chain Reaction, "Eileen" is a homer! It's up 10-5 on the Most Requested chart, #23 on the Song Index, as the Lp builds 38-30 on the Back Page, for strongest chart lainer of the week...The Checklist backs it up with a whopping 38 building, none dropping...If you're still concerned about the quirkiness, consider this from WAPP's Chip Hobart, "We had to add Dexys whether we want to or not--it's that big a hit, crossing all formats and boundaries--adult, CHR, urbans, everything. I think even WNBC is playing it". THE CALL, "MODERN ROMANS", POLYGRAM The glamour stocks have tended to overshadow The Call in recent weeks, but we have seen a quiet and consistent build. This week the walls did come down as 19 stations roll in for #4 Most Added... WDVE's Ron Nenni tells us, "The Call has been one of our favorites over the past couple of weeks. 'Walls Came Down' has staying power with catchy guitar riffs and David Byrne-style vocals. It sounds fun on the air." BERLIN, GEFFEN You just can't keep a phone burner like "Sex' down. It's #10 on the Most Requested list, up to #60 on the Song Index, and pulling top 5 calls in Buffalo, Denver, Boulder, Philly, Toledo, Charlotte, Hartford, and Albuquerque. That superlative audience response is upping rotation too, with increased play on 11 stations including KAZY, KBPI, KFOG, WGRQ, WMMR, and WCMF...#5 Most Added with 15 for a 3 week total of 66 ...A 49-42 Metro underline...Up 44-40 on the Index. PLEASENOTE --this week you'll find a new stats section called Master File located right after the Song Index. Basically, this is a one-stop system designed to allow programmers to conveniently check a record's status. Lp's are listed alphabetically and Ne breakout any and all relevant data; who added it, moved it up, down, sideways, Checklist info, adds to date--the works. 1983 FRIDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK ALBU M REPORT INC TM ALL RIGHTS RESERVED PRINTED AND FIRST PUBLISHED IN U S.A. CHAIN REACTION CONTINUED -- -- U2, "NEW YEAR'S DAY", ISLAND The 12" continues to move the upcoming Lp release to automatic status, as new play on 25 stations takes the two week total to 81 reports, including 24 Level I's...New at #34 on the Song Index with top 5 calls already at WSHE, WLAV-FM and WMAD...Don't underestimate this band's appeal. AFTER THE FIRE, EPIC Another FMQB pet project gets its hooks in deeper. First #1 phones at WKLS Atlanta, ditto WLRS Louisville, then the same story at WSHE...Get behind "Der Kommissar" with solid rotation and you will get results. Note the super chart debuts--#35 Index, #33 Metro as "Kommissar" lands at #28 on the Song Index! #6 Most Added with 14 for a total of 46 since the Front Red pick. GREG KIHN, ELEKTRA 12 more conversions give Greg a two week total of 113, as he locks up highest debut honors at #16 Index #20 Metro... "Jeopardy" has developed into one of the strongest crossover items on the radio, with especially active calls at KYYS, KTIM, KOME, KQAK, WWCK, and WROQ...Up 10-8 on the Song Index. It's a hit---there's no getting around it. "Fascination" debuts at #98. MODERN ENGLISH, SIRE "I Melt With You" is another tune that's been around a number of weeks and is just now catching fire... New at #47 on the Song Index (thanks to recent adds on KLOS, KZEW, WKLS, KOME, KBPI, KQAK, WLVQ, WIOT, WFYV, and KLAQ)...Added on 16 more this week, including KYYS, KQRS, WMMS, WMJQ, WLAV-FM, and WPYX... What's the appeal? Leo feels, "'Melt' is a great little tune that combines the freshness of mid 60's English pop with all the modern nuances".. .obviously it's in the pocket. Should hit the Back Page next week. WALL OF VOODOO, IRS If you're looking for excuses, you could weasel a bit behind the 41-42 Index lateral move, but take it from us, this record is exploding! #8 Most Added with 11 and new at #47 Metro as "Mexican Radio" moves 100-49-39 in the past three weeks and slams into the Most Requested list at #8. Still not convinced? How's this for reaction--Top phones after only one week at WGRQ, a 20-9 jump in WDVE sales research (as well as top 5 calls at WMAD, WBCN, WLPX, KBPI, KZEL, WZZO, and WIMZ)...One not to be missed. THOMPSON TWINS, ARISTA From a Front Red Tip to a Back Page debut in just three weeks. Bone and the boys (plus Kravitz, of course) are closing this one quicko...12 more adds (#7 Most Adda rtake the total to 45 complete with 10 majors. New at #46 Index, #44 Metro, as "Lies" hits the list at #76...Strongest play on WILS-FM, WLPX, WKLS, KQRS, KBPI, WXRT, KRQR, and WLAV-FM. THOMAS DOLBY, CAPITOL We have 58 adds to date and at this point the request ak-shun on "Science" has heated up to the point where we can say you holdouts are blowing it. "Science" debuts at #6 on the Most Requested Chart; advancing 55-45 on the Top 100. Top 5 calls at KBPI, KFOG, WAAF, WROQ, WHCN, WSHE, WDIZ, WQBK, WAPI, nd more. There were no dips in play this week and 13 ups led by KBPI, WOVE, WKLS, WILS-FM, WMAD, WPYX, and WROQ...A 35-n- Metro Prime Mover; up 29-27 on the Back Page. • STRANGE ADVANCE, CAPITOL This Pinch Hit was just hitting reporters at deadline and picked up quick adds on KBPI, KBCO, WIOT, WROQ, and 7 more..."Worlds Away'! is the office fave. We're also hearing nice things about "She Controls Me". WSKS' Marty Bender comments, "I hate to limit their uniqueness to a comparison, but the Cars at their best do come to mind. It's moody, melodic, and just manic enough to cross any aor boundaries"...And from Doug Clifton, KBCO, "Best new music this week includes Strange Advance. Everyone here really likes 'Worlds Away'".. .With a name like Strange Advance, consider the promotional opportunities. DEF LEPPARD, POLYDOR Charts, sales, requests--it's all there--"Photograph" digs in at #1 Most Requested, at #9 on the Song Index, the Lp climbs 11-4 Metro and Back Page, with 33 top 5 call mentions, 23 top 10 sales, and 14 play increases--11 of them majors. Overall the #1 builder this week. ART IN AMERICA, PAVILLION We agree with this analysis from KWXL's Doug Davis, "Seems to be hitting a segment of our audience that's not yet real fond of modern music but is burned out on metal"...KMET, KLOL, WMET, and WBCN are this week's key adds, and we register double underlines, 36-31 Index, 40-35 Metro...Note the 17 Checklist builders and be aware half of those surveyed not yet playing are considering...The title track surges 54-35.

Catalog 10 Flyers + Boo-hooray May 2021 22 eldridge boo-hooray.com New york ny Boo-Hooray Catalog #10: Flyers Boo-Hooray is proud to present our tenth antiquarian catalog, exploring the ephemeral nature of the flyer. We love marginal scraps of paper that become important artifacts of historical import decades later. In this catalog of flyers, we celebrate phenomenal throwaway pieces of paper in music, art, poetry, film, and activism. Readers will find rare flyers for underground films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol; incredible early hip-hop flyers designed by Buddy Esquire and others; and punk artifacts of Crass, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the underground Austin scene. Also included are scarce protest flyers and examples of mutual aid in the 20th Century, such as a flyer from Angela Davis speaking in Harlem only months after being found not guilty for the kidnapping and murder of a judge, and a remarkably illustrated flyer from a free nursery in the Lower East Side. For over a decade, Boo-Hooray has been committed to the organization, stabilization, and preservation of cultural narratives through archival placement. Today, we continue and expand our mission through the sale of individual items and smaller collections. We encourage visitors to browse our extensive inventory of rare books, ephemera, archives and collections and look forward to inviting you back to our gallery in Manhattan’s Chinatown. Catalog prepared by Evan Neuhausen, Archivist & Rare Book Cataloger and Daylon Orr, Executive Director & Rare Book Specialist; with Beth Rudig, Director of Archives. This course falls into social analysis and visual and performance arts analysis and practice because it shows how punk, as a subculture, has influenced alternative economic practices, led to political mobilization, and challenged social norms. This course situates the activity of listening to punk music in its broader cultural ideologies, such as the DIY (do-it-yourself) ideal, which includes nontraditional musical pedagogy and composition, cooperatively owned performance venues, and underground distribution and circulation practices. Students learn to analyze punk subculture as an alternative social formation and how punk productions confront and are times co-opted by capitalistic logic and normative economic, political and social arrangements. 3. MODERN DRUMMER VOL. 8, NO. 12 Cover Photo by Layne Murdock CONTENTS FEATURES TERRY BOZZIO Although his work with such artists as Frank Zappa, the Brecker Brothers, and UK established Terry Bozzio's reputation as a fine drummer, his work with Missing Persons has revealed that there is more to Bozzio than was demonstrated in those other situations. Here, he talks about the hard work that went into starting his own band, explains his feelings that drummers should be more visible, and details his self-designed electronic drumset. by Rick Mattingly 8 OMAR HAKIM The fact that Weather Report and David Bowie have been sharing the same drummer says a lot about Omar Hakim's versatility, especially when one considers the wide range of styles that each of those situations encompasses. But Hakim's background prepared him well for the many diverse musical settings he has encountered, and he recounts that background in this amiable discussion of his life and career. by Robin Tolleson 14 INSIDE CALATO by Rick Van Horn 18 IAN PAICE The drummer for Deep Purple reminisces about the group's formation, discusses the band's reunion after an eight-year breakup, and describes Deep Purple's effect on today's music. He also talks about his experiences as the drummer for Whitesnake and Gary Moore, and explains the differences in playing with a guitar-oriented versus a vocal-oriented band. by Robyn Flans 22 TRISTAN FRY Modest Virtuoso by Simon Goodwin 26 DRIVER'S SEAT COLUMNS Phrasing With A Big Band PROFILES by Mark Hurley 112 PORTRAITS EDUCATION JAZZ DRUMMERS WORKSHOP Allen Herman New Concepts For Improved by Don Perman 30 THE MUSICAL DRUMMER Performance Chord Changes—Part 2 by Laura Metallo, Ph.D.
