WELCOME to the 80th Annual Sask Valley (Virtual) Music Festival!

Playlist of Virtual Performances available on YouTube March 22–26, 2021 Virtual Awards Concert March 28, 2021

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

Welcome all of you to our ALMOST annual music festival. 3 days before we were to welcome you last year at Rosthern Mennonite Church for our competitions, COVID forced us to cancel. Our adjudicators were set to come to us, the piano was tuned, and students were putting in their final practicing. It was to be our 80th festival and we had to call off the party, balloons and all! What a disappointment for the committee and especially for our entrants. All that hard work and nowhere to go!

Here we are in 2021 at what I guess now becomes our 80th festival. The party will be online and we are amazed at how many of you have chosen to enter our virtual festival of classical music and speech. When the SMFA (our provincial body) last fall encouraged us to start planning for 2021, either virtually or in person (following provincial guidelines which you all realize can change without much notice), I for one was ready to just pack it in for yet another year. Fortunately our local committee has much more vision and technical skills than I, so that we are able to pull this off and serve those of you who have stuck with your lessons and practice. We want you to benefit from the wisdom and experience of our very capable adjudicators Dianne Gryba and Casey Peden, who incidentally were to be with us last year and were both able to commit to us this year instead. I do not know whether recording performances will be more or less worrisome than performing in person. Each method probably has its unique challenges. We hope our festival will be a rewarding experience for each of you as you perform to the best of your ability and receive our adjudicators' comments to both encourage and improve.

We are again grateful for the engagement of dedicated teachers and enthusiastic parents for their support and encouragement. Our scholarship supporters, business and private donors stand behind us.

While we cannot welcome an audience in person, stay tuned to this site and our FB page, for information on how to access the performances during our week of March 22. We hope also to put together a concert of highlights and announce our award winners online for viewing Sunday evening March 28. Announcements will be forthcoming when we are more certain.

Provincial finals will take place virtually in early June.

This year's festival is primarily being financed by the generous support we received last year and went largely unused. And our awards were carried over from last year. Please remember us in your donations. We will certainly need them to get Festival 2022 up and running. If you have beefs or bouquets, please contact someone on our committee. We also welcome comments on our FB page.

Linda Swab, President, SVMFA

The first festival ever was held May 1940 in the town of Laird at the instigation of a group of area educators. Primarily involved were school choruses, but it soon expanded to other disciplines in subsequent years.

 Ms. Peden has been heard as a soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Pro Coro , Madrigal Singers, Alberta College Womens Choir, Da Camera Singers, Schola Cantorum, the Dutch Renaissance Ensemble Verboden Frucht and recently with the Symphony Chamber Orchestra. She has been the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Bach’s Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio, and Coffee Cantata, Vaughn William’s Serenade to Music, Rutter’s Requiem, Allegri’s Miserere, and Haydn’s Missa Sancti Nicolai. Her most recent engagement was as the soprano soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the combined forces of the Laurentian University Choir, and the Sudbury Studio Singers under the direction of Robert Hall. In addition to her recital singing, Casey has been giving duet recitals with contralto Lisa Hornung, staying active with her studio, adjudicating, and volunteering with the Community Youth Choir in .

 She lives with her husband and two sons on the family ranch near Glaslyn, Saskatchewan.

In 1962, the Rosthern Festival became associated with the Saskatchewan Association of Music Festivals. It was first held under the Sask Valley name at RJC in 1963.

Dianne Gryba

 Dianne Gryba resides in North Battleford, Saskatchewan where she works as a teacher, accompanist and choral director. As well as maintaining a thriving studio of voice and piano students, Dianne co- teaches musical theatre classes at the Dance Connection with director, Virginia Winterhalt.

 She is proud of the many students who have gone on to pursue careers in classical music or music theatre. Dianne has a great love of choral singing. With JoAnne Kasper, she has directed and accompanied several groups in the Battlefords including the Gallery Singers, Battlefords Children’s Choirs, and Kamala Youth Choir. The choruses have been honoured with local and provincial awards, and Kamala has taken part in many wonderful festivals in Saskatchewan and beyond, including the Voices West events, which were initiated by Scott Leithead of Edmonton. Dianne has played and performed with her duo-piano partner, Bonnie Nicholson, for almost 3 decades. This joyful collaboration has always been a highlight in Dianne’s musical life. In 2016, Dianne and Bonnie joined with Chris Kelly and Janice Paterson, and initiated a summer school for young pianists and vocalists. SAVP (Summer Academy for Voice and Piano) is now held annually on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon.

 Ms. Gryba is active in the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association as president of the Battlefords Festival and as a provincial board member. Dianne enjoys the rich variety in her musical life and is thankful for the many opportunities she has had to collaborate with exceptional musicians in her career so far. She and her husband Greg continue to be involved in the lives of their three grown children and their families.

The year 2013 saw us scrambling to get to Waldheim and rearrange schedules due to a huge snowstorm. It blocked competitor’s roads and put our adjudicators in danger as they came to us and returned home.
