Game Day Rules (3-4th G rade)

1) Games must start and stop on time. Players need to arrive 15 minutes prior to posted game time ready to play. 2) Use the first 5 minutes for warm-up. 3) Teams will play 4 on 4 at all times. You may borrow players from the other team if needed. 4) Two 20 minute halves are played. Players should substitute every 5 minutes. Help the kids pair up but it should not be used as a time out. Encourage the kids to pair up independently and call out the number of the girl they are guarding. There will be no stop time except last minute of game (time runs during free throws). Substitutions allowed only after 5 minutes except for injury. A 5 minute break will take place after the first half. Have your next group ready to substitute 30 seconds prior to the end of the 5 minute play period to keep the game moving. It is very important that games end at the posted time. There should be adequate time to finish the game but the referee will end the game if it runs past the posted time. (4 minute substitutions can be used if both teams agree before game). 5) Provided adequate time remains to finish overtime in the posted game time, 2-minute overtime (stop-time) will be played in case of a tie. If still tied, then 1-minute sudden death format will be used. If game is still tied then it will end in a tie except for the season-end tournament. to start each overtime session. One additional time-out granted in each overtime session, no them over to the next session. 6) 2-30 second time-outs allowed per game, no carry over to overtimes. 7) Equal playing time will be shared by all girls. 8) Man to man defense only. 9) Help defense is encouraged, but be careful that a child is not abusing it. Help defense should only be used when a girl is c learly beaten off the dribble by the offense. No intentional double teaming. It will be the referee’s discretion whether a child is violating this. 10) Stealing the ball is allowed on the dribble and on a dead ball. Encourage kids to also use their feet on defense to try to prevent a girl from gaining progress with dribble. Standing still and reaching is a bad habit for the kids to get into. 11) No full court pressing allowed. After the defense gains control of the ball, the opponent must fall back behind the center line/half-court and must let the offensive team cross the half court line before defending. Jump ball to start the game, alternating possessions thereafter. 12) Fast breaks are okay but no early “release”. No cherry picking! 13) Hoops will be set at 9’. 14) Standard size girl’s will be used (27.5). 15) Score will be kept, but fouls will not be tracked. 16) No on-ball screens! (Coaches are discouraged from running these plays). If a child naturally screens in the course of the action then fine, but coaches are n ot to run set screen plays o n the ball. Off the ball screens are allowed and are encouraged! Stress good movement and spacing. Pass and Cut. Give and Go. 17) 1 or 2 referee will be used, please keep this in mind. Berating of the officials (including coaches) is not tolerated in any fashion. Incidents will be reported to the board by the referee or coaches and action
